Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Beginners Guide – Helpful Tips to Get you Started

Our Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Beginners Guide details all the concepts and mechanics that you should be aware of before starting the game.

In this Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Beginners Guide, we have enlisted some of the tips and tricks that we are sure you must know before starting out this game. Odyssey features a very new approach to the Assassin’s Creed series by making the game entirely RPG.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Beginners

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is indeed the among the best AC titles till date. The game boasts a number of welcome changes that both new and old school AC fans will find appealing.

These changes include new weapons, freedom for more versatile playstyles, large-scale battles, mercenaries, legendary animals, and more.

There is a lot of stuff to do in AC: Odyssey and the fact that it has 30 hours of cutscenes… makes this game one of the longest Assassin’s Creed games ever.

Loot Everything

Okay, before you begin the game, be sure to keep this in mind: LOOT EVERYTHING! Leave nothing behind. Honoring the dead in a game does not work so you can safely loot the dead bodies. Do not leave even a single dead body behind.

Since you can upgrade weapons in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, you will need a lot of money to do so. And that is exactly you need to loot everything. Human bodies drop materials and money.

Chests will drop Precious Gems, Obsidian Glass, and even money. You can even scavenge dead animals for extra Soft Leather and Animal Parts.

You can even go underwater to get more materials. Sunken ships will have loot chests and dead bodies for you to loot. Look out for red vases, they contain oil. You can burn them for additional fire damage to your enemies.

Even if you think you have enough money and materials, just loot everything. You do not need to rush the storyline of Assassin’s Creed. You can savor it by becoming one with the world this massive game has.

Keep your Cool

Try to stay in a limit and do not try to kill many higher-level enemies without proper gear. If an enemy has a Skull instead of level indication, you should probably not take a fight.

These enemies will take very low damage and will deal fatal strikes with each hit. Therefore, just try to keep your cool and kill enemies within your levels’ range. It will be better for your own sake.

The same case applies to wild animals too. If the wild animals are too high a level, they can desynchronize you in a single bite. It is tough because animals have a difficult movement to counter or parry.

If you really do have to kill a higher-level enemy, be sure to use Icarus to scout the area first. In a case that a high-level enemy is in the area, use Icarus to mark him and then use ranged weapons like Bows to headshot him.

If the red bar in his HP bar is depleted, you have a fair chance at killing this enemy. However, if that is not the case, we would suggest running away as far as possible – there is no shame in it.

Quick Save Whenever You Can

You will meet enemies you cannot defeat because Odyssey is based on the RPG genre. Mercenaries and other high-level enemies and animals will be able to kill you without much effort.

Additionally, if you are a high roller and would love to jump off a 100 meter, there is little hope you would survive. Heck, that ‘Desynchronized’ screen would appear so fast even Sonic would feel bad.

When you die, you will load your most recent save file. And you will lose all progress after that you have made after that save file.

To not lose any progress, we suggest that you do a Quick Save every now and then. It does not take much time.

Your progress will be saved and you will be able to resume from where you left. No penalties. You can access the Quick Save menu from the Pause menu.

Play, However, You Would Like

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey can be enjoyed however you want. Whether you are a warrior, just trying to battle any and every enemy head-on or an Assassin, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike, AC: Odyssey gives you complete freedom over what you want to do.

Play the game; however, you see fit. There is no shame in playing the game with your own playstyle.

The game is actually more difficult if you are not playing the way you want to play it. Heck, it gets awkward. I am an Assassin-styled player and when I tried the Warrior-style, I felt odd.

When playing as a hunter, you can unlock different types of arrows if you unlock the Arrow Mastery skill. There are several types of arrows, including fire, poison, paralyzing or even explosive.

You can also kill the second Legendary Beast to get Death Arrows.

Fire Arrows
These can be further upgraded with the Fire Mastery skill. Does fire damage to an enemy that stacks.

Paralyzing Arrows
These do less damage than normal arrows but can knock out an enemy easily. Especially useful for hiring new people.

Poison Arrows
These can be further upgraded with the Poison Mastery skill. It does poison damage and target becomes intoxicated. The enemy’s DPS reduces gradually and takes more damage from attacks while intoxicated.

Explosive Arrows
These can be further upgraded with the Fire Mastery skill. Hits enemies in an area and deals fire damage to everyone in the blast radius.

Death Arrow
The strongest arrows, these arrows deal 100% more damage than normal arrows and can become quite a useful tool when battling tough enemies.

On your Inventory menu, you see three stats:

Hunter
The higher this number, the stronger your bows will be and they will do more damage. Your abilities will also get stronger.

Assassin
This number affects the assassin gameplay of the game. The higher this number, the more difficult you are to find and you will do more damage to assassination-related abilities

Warrior
The further you are as a Warrior, the more damage you will do with your melee weapons and abilities regarding melee attacks.

Explore Everything

You need to explore everything in this game. Leave no stone unturned. Nothing is worth not pondering over. You will get loads of XP and even Side Quests that will reward you with the gear you would use even in the endgame.

There is the whole of Greece to explore!

Additionally, you can also synchronize areas just as you have done in all Assassin’s Creed games. This will provide better vision for Icarus, your worthy Eagle. This gives a very literal meaning to Eagle Vision, doesn’t it?

Synchronizing Points also give you the ability to fast-travel to them. This will decrease your traveling burden and save you a considerable amount of time. I mean, no one likes to travel 10 minutes just to get some Obsidian Glass.

Another reason you would want to explore everything is that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has Dynamic Weather. It changes.

The whole environment transforms when the weather changes. The landscape looks very difficult in both winter and summer and you will love to view the world in different seasons. It is beautiful!

Keep a Low Profile

I cannot stress this enough. If you are a beginner, keep an eye on the skulls in the bottom right corner of the screen.

They are important indicators of your Bounty Level. If this gets high, mercenaries will hunt you. Mercenaries are high-level enemies that have unique names and they can defeat you instantly.

To keep a low profile, do not kill enemies that have a high reputation or dominance. Killing them will increase your Bounty Level. If your Bounty Level is high enough, mercenaries will come to haunt you.

You can lower the Bounty Level by killing the person that has tipped the mercenary. However, be careful, something can go wrong there.

Keep your Engravings

Engravings are like special stats for Weapon/Armor. You can equip a weapon with an Engraving to give it extra damage or other buffs. Engravings are available from the Blacksmith and have to be added onto the Weapon/Armor before they can be utilized.

However, it is not free. Engraving a weapon will cost money and materials like the Obsidian Glass.

Engravings are also not available from the start; you need to unlock them. Doing so can require anything e.g. killing a number of enemies, running a specific mile, etc.

You can get Engravings from riddles that you will receive from time to time. Open your inventory and the riddles will be available in the Documents section.

If you are able to figure out the riddles, you might be able to get a good Engraving for your weapon.

Gear

There is no limit to the number of Quest Items and Documents you can store but a 350 pieces limit exists for gears and weapons.

You can toggle the ‘headgear’ off which will allow you to view your character’s face and head during battles and cut-scenes.

You can increase the Assassin, Warrior and Hunter stats by getting better gear or upgrading your existing gear by visiting the Blacksmith. He’s located in the game in various cities. All gear is graded into four levels:

Common
Common Gear is the weakest gear and has only one attribute per equipment

Rare
Rare Gear is better than common gear and can be differentiated with the purple skin on its icon. Rare has two attributes per equipment.

Epic
Epic Gear is the best gear you can get from normal drops. It has a yellow skin on its icon and offers three attributes per equipment.

Legendary
Legendary Gear Is the best gear in the game. This gear can only be found after killing specific cultists or doing quests or by simply looting legendary crates.

Legendary Weapons offer two attributes as well as a Legendary Perk. You can check out our Legendary Weapons and Legendary Armor guides for more help.

Don’t Take Everything to the Point

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey tries to be historically accurate but Montreal likes to tinker. A LOT. If you were hoping that you would be able to pass your History test just by playing this game, you are wrong.

You would still need to study for that test. And you should!

Odyssey has introduced mythical beasts like the Minotaur and even Medusa. Those are not even real! So do not believe this game to the point.

Sure, it is a good representation of the Peloponnesian War and the weapons are somewhat accurate but not everything is accurate to the point.

And that is it! Thanks for reading our Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Beginners Guide. We have ensured that we include everything that you may need to know before starting the game. If you think we missed anything, be sure to let us know in the comments section below! We will be sure to take note.
