Regions

The Lands Between are open in the sense that nothing stops you riding into Caelid at level ten. They are not open in the sense that the game expects you to. Every region has an intended window, signalled by the level of its enemies and the stones its tunnels drop, and the difference between a smooth run and a miserable one is mostly knowing which door to open next. The map also has three layers: the surface, a vast underground reached through wells and coffins, and a handful of hubs and sky ruins outside geography altogether.

This guide is the route. It starts with a table of the regions in the order most players should meet them, with the level our boss and region pages suggest and the thing that unlocks each one. Then it describes every region page on our wiki, surface first, underground second, hubs last, with what each holds and where to go from there. For the dungeons inside each region, the dungeons guide has the checklist; for the bosses, the bosses guide.

Levels are a comfort range, not a gate. Our Progression Route walks the same order with the key items to collect in each stop, and Where To Go After Stormveil handles the first fork.

Surface regions

Limgrave and the Weeping Peninsula

The starting region, split between the grassland around Agheel Lake, Stormhill beneath the castle and the Weeping Peninsula across the Bridge of Sacrifice. It teaches the game gently and still hides items that last to the credits: the Flask of Wondrous Physick, the Whetstone Knife, the Uchigatana, Lhutel the Headless and the Erdtree's Favor. Our Limgrave page lists every boss, dungeon, NPC and item, and the level at which to move on.

Liurnia of the Lakes

The flooded basin beyond Stormveil, the largest region in the game and the home of Raya Lucaria, Caria Manor, the Church of Vows and the sealed sorcerers' towers. Ranni's and Fia's questlines both take root here. Our Liurnia page covers the two ways in, the bosses from Smarag to Rennala, the dungeons and towers, the NPCs, and the two lifts out.

Mountaintops of the Giants

The frozen final region, opened by the Rold Medallion after Morgott, where Castle Sol holds half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and the Forge of the Giants ends the surface story. Our Mountaintops page covers the Fire Giant and the optional bosses around it, the catacombs and hero's grave, and the point of no return before Farum Azula.

Caelid

The red wasteland east of Limgrave, scarred by the battle between Radahn and Malenia and soaked in scarlet rot. It is reachable from the first hour by road or by teleporter trap, and it is meant to hurt; the reward for going early is the Meteorite Staff, Rock Sling and a rune farm on a sleeping dragon. Our Caelid page covers both map fragments, the recommended level, the main bosses, Redmane Castle and the region's merchants, and Dragonbarrow to the north holds the Bestial Sanctum and the highest-level enemies on the surface.

West Liurnia and the Three Sisters

The mountainous western shelf of Liurnia sits above Caria Manor and is easy to miss entirely. West Liurnia is reached through a portal or by finishing Ranni's questline, holds the Moonlight Altar and Alecto's evergaol, and our page recommends level 60 or above. The Three Sisters are the towers behind Caria Manor where Ranni, Seluvis and Renna each keep a rise, and Ranni's questline begins at the first of them.

Altus Plateau and Mt. Gelmir

The golden highlands before the capital are the largest region after Liurnia and the richest in field bosses, from the Fallingstar Beast to Wormface and Ancient Dragon Lansseax. Altus Plateau covers all three ways up, the Grand Lift of Dectus, the Ruin-Strewn Precipice and the Abductor Virgin shortcut, and where the map fragment is. Mt. Gelmir is the volcano to the west, reached across the plateau, through Rya's invitation or by losing to an Abductor Virgin at the Academy, and Volcano Manor with Rykard inside is its reason to exist.

Leyndell, Royal Capital

The capital opens only to a Tarnished carrying two Great Runes, and the Draconic Tree Sentinel guards the main gate. Inside are Godfrey's shade, Morgott, the Bolt of Gransax, the Fortified Manor and the well down into the sewers. Our Leyndell page covers the two Great Runes, the lift, the gate and the graces in order. Everything here that can be looted should be, because after the Fire Giant the city becomes the Ashen Capital and much of it is buried.

Consecrated Snowfield

A hidden region beside the Mountaintops, permanently blizzard-blind, and the way to both the Haligtree and Mohgwyn Palace. Consecrated Snowfield explains the two medallion halves that let the Grand Lift of Rold take you there, an early route, and the map fragment. The Cave of the Forlorn, Yelough Anix Tunnel and Ordina, Liturgical Town are its dungeons.

Underground regions

Siofra River, the Ancestral Woods and the Siofra Aqueduct

The first underground region most players find, through the Siofra River Well in Mistwood. Siofra River covers the entrances, the recommended level and the sub-locations, and warns that the archers and Ancestral Followers hit well above Limgrave's weight. The Ancestral Woods above Nokron hide the Regal Ancestor Spirit behind six flames, and the Siofra Aqueduct beyond them is where the Valiant Gargoyles guard the coffin to Deeproot Depths.

Ainsel River, Nokstella and the Lake of Rot

Liurnia's underground. Ainsel River is entered from a well in eastern Liurnia and again from Renna's Rise during Ranni's quest; it holds the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella and leads down to Nokstella, Eternal City, where the Baleful Shadow waits and the Moon of Nokstella talisman lies. Below that is the Lake of Rot, a floor of scarlet rot with Astel at the bottom, and only Preserving Boluses or the Flame, Cleanse Me incantation will get you across it.

Deeproot Depths and the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds

Two underworlds beneath the capital. Deeproot Depths is reached by coffin after the Valiant Gargoyles and holds Crucible Knight Siluria, Fia's champions and Lichdragon Fortissax, plus a Walking Mausoleum. The Subterranean Shunning-Grounds are Leyndell's sewers, entered from a well in the city, and run down through Mohg the Omen to the Frenzied Flame Proscription and the Three Fingers.

Mohgwyn Palace

The Lord of Blood's hidden dynasty, reached either by Varre's Pureblood Knight's Medal or by a waygate in the Consecrated Snowfield. Our page covers both routes, the Albinauric approach that became the game's most famous rune farm, and the two-phase fight with Mohg, Lord of Blood at the mausoleum.

Hubs and places outside the map

Roundtable Hold

Your base, reached only by Melina's invitation after accepting her accord and visiting enough graces, with no physical entrance from the world. It holds Hewg, Enia, Roderika, Corhyn, Fia, D, Gideon and the Twin Maiden Husks, and its locked doors open as the story advances. Roundtable Hold lists every resident, how to leave, which doors open when, and the two invasions that happen inside it.

Crumbling Farum Azula

The sky ruins outside time, reached by burning the Erdtree at the Forge of the Giants. Our walkthrough runs grace by grace from the Crumbling Beast Grave to the Dragon Temple, through the Godskin Duo, the Azula Beastmen and the optional Dragonlord Placidusax, to Maliketh, the Black Blade, whose defeat drops you back into an ashen capital.

Elden Ring regions FAQ

In what order should I do the regions?

Limgrave, then Liurnia, then Caelid around level 40 to 60, then the Altus Plateau and Mt. Gelmir, then Leyndell, the Mountaintops, and the late optional regions. The underground fits between Liurnia and Leyndell.

How many regions are there?

Six main surface regions in the base game, Limgrave, Liurnia, Caelid, Altus Plateau, Mountaintops of the Giants and Leyndell, plus hidden areas such as the Consecrated Snowfield, four underground zones, Mohgwyn Palace, the Haligtree and Farum Azula.

Can I skip Caelid?

Yes, if you take Rennala and Rykard as your two Great Runes. You would miss Radahn, Nokron, Ranni's ending and some of the best loot in the game, so most players go around level 60 instead.

What is the hardest region?

Miquella's Haligtree, with the Consecrated Snowfield and the Lake of Rot behind it. Caelid feels hardest because most players arrive far too early.
