Armor
Armor in Elden Ring is the one piece of your kit you cannot upgrade, which is exactly why the choice matters. A weapon at +25 will carry a weak build; a chest piece stays what it was the day you found it. What armor does is set three numbers that shape every fight: how much of each hit you absorb, how much punishment you can take before an attack interrupts you, and how heavy you can go before your dodge roll turns sluggish. Everything else, including the way it looks, is fashion.
This guide explains those three numbers first, with the equip load thresholds and the resistance stats that most players never read. It then picks the best sets on our wiki for the common needs, from raw physical negation to the lightest robes for a caster, and finishes with every armor set we cover sorted by weight class and role, each with where to get it and the stat that makes it worth wearing. Boss sets bought from Enia and sets locked behind questlines get their own section, because the route to them is half the story.
How armor works
Damage negation and resistances
Each piece lists eight negation values: physical, then strike, slash and pierce as sub-types, then magic, fire, lightning and holy. They are percentages of incoming damage removed after the enemy's attack is calculated, and they add across your four pieces. The heaviest sets on our wiki reach the mid-forties against physical damage; the Bull-Goat Set tops the chart at 45 physical, while a caster's robe such as the Battlemage Set stops around 12. Elemental negation is a separate axis, and it is where lighter sets compete: Goldmask's Set weighs under 10 yet negates 24.5 magic and lightning, and Azur's Glintstone Set has the highest magic negation on the wiki at 11.8 weight.
Below the negation block sit four resistances. Immunity fights poison and scarlet rot, Robustness fights blood loss and frostbite, Focus fights sleep and madness, and Vitality fights death blight. They rarely decide a build, but they explain why a light set like the Bandit Set, with 124 Immunity and 130 Vitality and Focus, is a better swamp outfit than plate armor twice its weight, and why the Mushroom Set earns a slot for Caelid and the Lake of Rot.
Poise
Poise is the sum of a small number on every armor piece, and it decides whether an enemy hit interrupts your animation. Below the thresholds, a single arrow cancels your heavy attack; above them, you trade blows and finish the swing. Our What Is Poise guide explains why players aim past 70 and how the Bull-Goat's Talisman fills the gap, and Best Poise Armor ranks the sets that get there. Poise is the real reason to carry heavy plate; the negation difference between medium and heavy armor is smaller than the poise difference.
Equip load and roll speed
Every piece has a weight, and the total of your armor, weapons and talismans against your equip load capacity sets your roll. Under 30 percent of capacity you light roll, the fastest and longest dodge; up to 70 percent you medium roll, which is where most builds live; past that the heavy roll is slow enough to get you killed, and over 100 percent you cannot run at all. Endurance raises the capacity, and the Great-Jar's Arsenal, Arsenal Charm and Erdtree's Favor all stretch it. How to Roll Faster works through the thresholds. As a rule of thumb from our set pages, anything under about 20 weight is light, 20 to 35 is medium, and the 40 to 63 range is heavy plate.
| Equip load used | Roll | Typical loadout |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 percent | Light roll, longest distance | Caster robes or a light set such as the Page Set at 9 weight |
| 30 to 70 percent | Medium roll | Knight sets in the 20 to 35 range, the sweet spot for most builds |
| 70 to 100 percent | Heavy roll, short and slow | Full plate such as the Lionel Set at 50.5 without Endurance to match |
| Over 100 percent | No roll or sprint | Avoid |
Upgrades, altering and hiding your helmet
Armor cannot be reinforced at a blacksmith; Can You Upgrade Armor explains the alternatives, which come down to better sets, talismans and Vigor. What you can do is alter a piece's appearance with the Tailoring Tools and Sewing Needle from Coastal Cave, usually removing a cape or hood for a small stat trade, as covered in How To Alter Armor and How to Alter Garments. If you want to see your character's face without losing the helm's stats, How To Hide Helmet covers the options.
A handful of pieces carry effects beyond their numbers, and those are the ones that shape builds. The Crimson Hood adds a point of Vigor, the Silver Tear Mask adds eight Arcane for a 5 percent cut to attack power, the Battlemage Set raises Intelligence and Strength, Alberich's Set boosts thorn sorceries, the Royal Remains Set heals you below 18 percent health, the Deathbed Set heals your allies, and the Black Knife Set's chest piece silences your footsteps.

Sets you buy from Enia after a boss
Finger Reader Enia at the Roundtable Hold sells the armour of several bosses once they are dead, which is how most players complete the late-game wardrobe. Our pages list the Elden Lord Set after Godfrey, Maliketh's Set for 45,000 Runes after Maliketh, the Royal Knight Set after Loretta, the Veteran's Set after Commander Niall and the Briar Set after Elemer of the Briar. The General Radahn Set and Malformed Dragon Set follow the same pattern after their bosses. Prices climb with the boss, so budget before a late Remembrance trade.
Elden Ring armor FAQ
What is the best armor in Elden Ring?
For pure numbers, the Bull-Goat Set, with the Lionel and Beast Champion sets behind it. For most builds the answer is the heaviest set that keeps you at a medium roll, which usually means a knight set in the 25 to 40 range.
Is it worth wearing armor at all?
Yes. Negation reduces every hit, and poise is what stops enemies from interrupting your attacks. Players who fight in rags are relying on never being hit, which works until it does not.
Why do some players skip heavy armor?
Weight. Heavy plate pushes you into the slow roll unless you invest in Endurance or equip load talismans, and many players would rather dodge further than absorb more.
What is the rarest armor?
The farmed sets. Blackflame Monk, Cuckoo Knight and Mausoleum Knight pieces each drop about 3 percent of the time, and Exile Set pieces about 1.5 percent, so Arcane and the Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot speed things up.
Can armor be upgraded?
No. Armor stats are fixed. You can alter a piece's appearance with the Tailoring Tools, but reinforcing is only for weapons.
