Divinity Original Sin

This hub is for the 2014 Divinity: Original Sin, the classless turn-based RPG with two Source Hunters, not for Original Sin 2, which has its own hub. Our five pages for the first game are a troubleshooting list, a beginner's primer, a long character-building guide, a crafting recipe list and a side quest walkthrough that is the largest of the five. The quest page walks three regions in the order the game reaches them, Cyseal, then Luculla Forest and Hiberheim, then the Dark Forest, and both recruits the builds page adds to your party are found in Cyseal. So this hub is arranged the same way: what to settle in the first town before the road north, then what each later region asks for.

Before the Beach: Thirteen PC Problems

The fixes page dates from launch and says so, calling the state of the game Launch Syndrome and asking you to patch first. Its thirteen entries split by cause. Four are security software: a game that will not start, one that demands an update every launch, the WindowsFormApplication1 crash and multiplayer that will not connect are all traced to a firewall or antivirus, with an exception for the game as the fix and Hamachi as a stopgap for co-op. The black screen's fix is the executable, launching EoCApp.exe from the Shipping folder as administrator, which is also what the WindowsFormApplication1 entry falls back to. The save crash has the most involved workaround, a read-only file placed in a LevelCache folder created while standing on the opening beach, with renaming the whole save folder as the fallback. The rest are a splash screen that needs Enter pressed, a 32-bit crash on New Game, a missing d3dx9_43.dll, laptops whose Optimus switching runs the game on the wrong GPU, a combat bug the patches have since fixed, a note that the engine renders in DirectX 9 only, and Collector's Edition items that only Steam support can restore.

Roderick and Scarlett: Build the Two Heroes First

Both character pages open on the same fact: there is no real class. The builds guide says the preset you pick for Roderick or Scarlett only fixes their starting abilities and gear, which matters for about the first hour, and that a Knight can be a Wizard a few hours later if the points go that way. What actually shapes a character is the Abilities screen, and the page walks its six groups: Weapons (bows, crossbows, single-handed, two-handed), Defense (Armor Specialist, Body Building, Shield Specialist, Willpower), the eight Skill schools that unlock skill books of a type, Personality, Craftsmanship (with Blacksmithing named the most useful, since it repairs your own gear) and the Nasty Deeds of lockpicking, pickpocketing and sneaking, which the page rates as mostly not worth points because locks break under enough Strength.

The numbers on that page are the ones to plan with. Talents: 45 listed with their in-game text, a new pick at level 3 and every four levels after, some with attribute or ability requirements. Attributes: six, with 5 points at creation and one per level, and three suggested splits over five level-ups, 3 Intelligence, 1 Speed and 1 Constitution for a caster or ranged healer, 2 Strength, 2 Constitution and 1 Perception for a tank, and 3 Dexterity, 1 Speed and 1 Perception for a ranger. Traits: nine opposed pairs such as Compassionate against Heartless or Bold against Cautious, set by how you talk and act, each side buffing a different ability. The worked example is a party of four, Roderick as an elemental caster with Lone Wolf, Far Out Man, Bigger and Better and All Skilled Up, and Scarlett as a marksman with Expert Marksman and Scoundrel at 5 and Leadership taken for initiative, plus the two Cyseal recruits below.

The beginner's guide is the shorter companion to it, and its advice is about surviving the first fights rather than the build: use teleport constantly and at the start of a fight, keep a healer to save gold on resurrection, take Constitution early, identify and equip what you find rather than buying gear, save Action Points for the next turn, and remember that hitting a fire enemy with fire heals it. Its one ability-level table is the five-rung Way of the Warrior line, from more armor at rank one to four extra Action Points a turn at rank five.

Cyseal: Two Recruits, a Crafting Station and 26 Quests

The builds guide fills the other two party slots in the first town. Madora, a Knight at the King Crab Tavern, is its tank, given Strength and Constitution and shielded by Roderick's spells because she carries no shield of her own. Jahan, found in the library, is its healer, with Intelligence raised quickly and Hydrosophist cures as his job. The side quests guide later gives each of them a quest of their own in the Dark Forest, so recruiting both here pays twice.

Cyseal is also where the crafting recipes start to matter, because a station is anything with a furnace, an anvil and water, and the recipe list is 193 entries long: 23 potions, 18 scrolls and skill books, 32 foods and drinks, 14 weapons, 13 armors, 25 accessories, 15 arrows and arrowheads, 22 enchantments and 31 miscellaneous parts. Six names carry two recipes each (Poison Potion, Poison Arrowhead, Lockpick, Bone dust, Pixie Dust, Large Iron Bar), and the page states two Crafting Level gates outright, 1 to 2 for a Medium Healing Potion and 3 or more for a Large one. Item stats scale with your level, so what you craft in Cyseal will be outgrown.

The quest page's first region holds 26 of its 41 quests, twelve walked in full and fourteen as minor entries. Its one level warning here is for Braccus Rex, whom it tells you to leave until close to level 9 and until the main quest A Mysterious Murder is done. Several quests share ground: the Black Cove cave west of town is entered for Crabs vs. Skeletons, Lost Love at the Lighthouse and Kitty Love, and the robot cave north of town for The Talking Statues, The Fabulous Five, Cecil's Mighty Stuff and Tom the Wannabe Adventurer. Two quests want the Pet Pal talent on someone (Kitty Love and The Preacher of Earthly Delights), A Source Hunter's Journey collects seven stones that each open a room at the End of Time, one of them the hall where skills are reset, and The Wishing Brother can only be started here, since freeing William needs a scroll from Hiberheim.

Luculla Forest and Hiberheim: Nine Quests and a Level 15 Warning

The second region has four full quests and five minor ones, and the quest page's second level warning: The Troll's Bounty, which wants around level 15 and either invisibility or sneaking, because the Troll King and his company are described as very tough and the page's route is to slip past them to the Tenebrium and mine about ten ingots for Brandon. That quest is the hub of the region. It sends you through Maradino's hideout, where a study key dug from the fruit area opens a room holding both a passage to a blood gem and the book that gets you through the mushroom circles, and Maradino's ghost waits outside to be frozen, knocked down and burned.

Two quests hang off it directly. Frederick's Blood Stone and Slave and Master use the same cave: a potion of valor mixed from an apple and a pumpkin sends the imp back to his master, and the blood gem heals Frederick, who turns on you the moment he has it. The Naked Truth follows the bounty and turns on the Mining Officer's Letter from the main quest Investigating the Mine, which lets Nadia expose Lawrence, whom the crowd may kill on the spot or you may find dead later in Cyseal. This is also where The Wishing Brother finishes: the Find the Witch! quest brings you to Hiberheim, and the route runs through falling icicles held off by a party member on a switch, a lava trap with three panels and a hidden fourth, a lever in a bush, the Winter King, a statue whose riddle answer is Lurrean, and a corridor of statues that only sneaking or invisibility crosses, ending at the Well Teleportation Scroll.

Dark Forest: Six Quests, Two of Them Your Companions' Own

The last region's three full quests include the two that pay off the Cyseal recruits. Jahan's is The King's Dark Deal, a demon named Balberith met during the main quest Follow the Wizard, with three ways out: hand Jahan over, kill another demon for Balberith, or fight him while his four summoned souls make him nearly immune until they fall. Madora's is Revenge of the Source Hunter, an orc named Norak upstairs in the Hunter's Edge tavern, whom the page tells you to keep at range. Distill My Heart is the third, a whiskey brewed from a recipe in Glen's basement, a bucket of well water and barley ground at the mill, then aged thirteen years by the imp at the End of Time. The three minor quests get you into Hunter's Edge in the first place, through a troll on a bridge, a medallion or beating the gate guard at rock, paper, scissors, and an armory key hidden in the bartender's chest.

What These Pages Do Not Cover

The main quest is the missing page. Our five Divinity: Original Sin pages hold no walkthrough of it, though the side quests page names five main quests its optional ones depend on: A Mysterious Murder, Find the Witch!, The Initiation, Investigating the Mine and Follow the Wizard. Nothing here is written for the Enhanced Edition, and nothing lists the skills inside each school, which the builds guide declines to do on purpose because there are so many. Original Sin 2's classes, crafting and companions live on the sequel's own hub.

Original Sin Questions

Are there classes in Divinity: Original Sin?

Not in any binding sense. The builds guide says the preset only sets starting abilities and gear, and the beginner's guide that any character can wear any armor, try any weapon and learn any spell or talent.

What level should I be for Braccus Rex and the Troll King?

The side quests page says close to level 9 for Braccus Rex, after finishing A Mysterious Murder, and around level 15 for The Troll's Bounty, where it also wants invisibility or good sneaking.

Where are Madora and Jahan?

Both in Cyseal: Madora at the King Crab Tavern and Jahan in the library. The builds guide uses her as the tank and him as the healer of its sample party.
