Dungeons
Beneath the open fields of the Lands Between sits a second game. Every region hides a dozen or more small dungeons, each a ten-minute detour with a boss at the end and something specific behind it: a Spirit Ash, a Smithing Stone Bell Bearing, a talisman, a spell, a Memory Stone. The six great legacy dungeons carry the story, but the catacombs, caves, tunnels and towers are where builds get made, and skipping them is why so many players arrive at Leyndell underpowered.
This guide is a completionist's checklist. It starts with what each type of dungeon tends to hold, so you know why you are going in, then lists every dungeon and landmark on our wiki region by region in a table with its type, its boss and the reward that justifies the trip. Puzzle towers get a short section on how they open, and the FAQ answers the counting questions. Every name links to a page with the route to the entrance, a walkthrough and the boss fight.
What each dungeon type is for
| Type | What it looks like | What it usually holds |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy dungeon | A castle or city with its own graces and a demigod at the end | Great Runes, Remembrances, whole armor sets, the story |
| Catacombs | Stone corridors, imps, guillotine traps, a lever that opens the boss door | Spirit Ashes and Grave Gloveworts; twenty of them across the map |
| Caves and grottoes | Natural tunnels, often dark, sometimes poisoned or rotted | Talismans, spells, armor pieces and cookbooks |
| Tunnels and mines | Miners, crystal enemies, a minecart ramp down | Smithing Stones and the Bell Bearings that make them buyable |
| Hero's graves | Chariots on a slope, ghost knights, an Ancient Hero boss | Some of the best loot density in the game, including Legendary talismans and armor |
| Evergaols | A stone ring on the surface that pulls you into a duel | A boss and one reward, no exploration |
| Rises and towers | A sealed sorcerer's tower opened by a puzzle | Memory Stones and rare sorceries |
| Churches, ruins and forts | Surface landmarks with a cellar, a chest or an NPC | Sacred Tears, Flask upgrades, quest steps, medallions |
Two roundups map whole categories: All Catacomb Locations and All Evergaol Locations. For the surface geography that these dungeons sit in, the regions guide covers recommended levels and the order to visit.

How the puzzle towers open
Every sealed rise has a message at its door. "Seek three wise beasts" means three spectral turtles are hiding nearby, sometimes invisible, sometimes underwater or on a roof, and all three must be killed; Seek Three Wise Beasts covers the trick for Oridys's, Testu's and Chelona's Rises. Lenne's Rise wants a Spiritspring jump onto its balcony, the Converted Fringe Tower wants the Erudition gesture performed while wearing a Glintstone Crown, Mirage Rise wants three phantom crests touched, and the Albinauric Rise imp statues fight each other for the answer. The Magic Doors guide gathers all of these, Illusory Walls lists the false walls inside caves and catacombs, and Paintings covers the scavenger hunts that start in castles and villages.
Elden Ring dungeons FAQ
How many dungeons does Elden Ring have?
Six legacy dungeons carry the story, and the base game adds around fifty minor dungeons, twenty of them catacombs, plus eleven evergaols and a scattering of sealed towers. Our wiki covers 102 of these locations.
Which dungeons should I do first?
In Limgrave: the Third Church of Marika for the Physick flask, Limgrave Tunnels for stones, Deathtouched Catacombs for the Uchigatana, and Stormfoot or Murkwater Catacombs for a first Spirit Ash. Then Stormveil Castle.
What is the hardest dungeon?
Among minor dungeons, the hero's graves with chariots, Auriza and Giant-Conquering above all, kill more players than any boss inside them. Among legacy dungeons, Elphael and the Haligtree.
Are the dungeons optional?
Almost all of them. Only Stormveil, the route through Leyndell, Farum Azula and one more shardbearer's dungeon are required. Everything else exists for the loot and the levels.
How do I open a door with an imp statue?
With a Stonesword Key. Seventy are scattered across the map and merchants sell twenty more; some doors, such as Fringefolk Hero's Grave, take two.
