Our NBA 2K23 coverage is five pages, and the first thing to know about each is which mode it belongs to. Two are MyCareer pages about your own player: how attribute upgrades and the 85 cap work, and a worked Paint Beast centre build with 40 badges listed. One is a MyLeague page on building a custom team. One, on changing the starting lineup, straddles MyCareer and MyLeague. The last, on camera angles, applies wherever you are standing, from a MyCareer game to the park and the City. So this hub is sorted by mode, and each section says what our page settles and what it leaves to you.
Reading Order
| Read | Mode | What it settles |
|---|---|---|
| Best camera angle settings | Every mode | Nine angles, seven settings, and presets for the four the page rates highest |
| Attribute upgrades | MyCareer | VC buys upgrades, MyPoints lift the 85 cap, and three ways to earn MyPoints faster |
| Paint Beast build | MyCareer | Body, attributes, 40 badges and two takeovers for a defensive centre |
| Change the starting lineup | MyCareer and MyLeague | Three menus that reorder the five, and a D-pad shortcut for positions |
| Create custom teams | MyLeague | A team from scratch, or a copied roster with your own players added |
| Attribute upgrades and custom teams guide | Both | The two mechanics pages side by side, sorted by what each change costs |
Every Mode: Fix the Camera First
The camera page argues that a bad angle in a sports game costs you more than in most genres, because the court is crowded and some players get motion sick from the default framing. It lists nine angles you can cycle from Camera Options in the pause menu (Nosebleed, On-Court, High, Broadcast, 2K, Swivel, Skybox, Side and Rail) and seven settings to tune on each (Flip Style, Fix Height, Auto Flip, Rev Angle, Key Zoom, Height and Zoom), with Reset to Default if you lose your way. Its verdict is that 2K and High give the best view of the whole floor, with Courtside and Side as harder but more cinematic runners-up, and it gives a preset for each of the four. The two it recommends differ in one number: both use Zoom 1, but 2K sits at Height 4 and High at Height 1, with Key Zoom, Rev Angle and Auto Flip off, Fix Height on and Flip Style set to Spin in both cases. Turn the shake off whatever you pick; the page says it gets in the way on free throws.
Two bugs are worth knowing before you spend time on this. The page says camera settings may fail to save and revert to default at the start of each match, and that in the park and the City the camera can stick close to your player; the fix for the second is to pick a different angle from the options menu and then switch back. Outside a match, the D-pad brings up the camera selector.
MyCareer: Your Player
Two of our pages are about the player you build, and they meet in the middle. The attribute upgrades page explains the economy: VC, which career games, events and the store all provide, pays for each upgrade in the Progression menu's Attribute tab, but every build starts capped at 85 overall and only MyPoints, earned by playing, raise that cap towards 99. Which attributes are open to you depends on the build you chose at the start. To grow faster it suggests changing the difficulty, completing the quest Coach Wayne Graves hands out, which permanently boosts MyPoints, and equipping badges that help shots fall, since made shots pay MyPoints.
The Paint Beast page is what one finished build looks like. It is a defensive centre, 7 feet 3 inches and 247 pounds with an 8 foot 1 wingspan and the Built body shape, and its attribute sheet tells you where the VC went: Block and Defensive Rebound at 99, Interior Defense and Stamina at 96, Standing Dunk at 94, Offensive Rebound at 90, and no figure listed for Three-Point Shot or Speed with Ball. The badge list runs to 40 across four groups, 12 finishing, 7 shooting, 10 playmaking and 11 rebounding. Eight of the 40 sit at Hall of Fame and all eight are finishing or rebounding badges (Pro Touch and Aerial Wizard on offence; Boxout Beast, Chase Down Artist, Anchor, Pogo Stick, Post Lockdown and Work Horse on the glass). Five are marked as core badges: Limitless Takeoff, Rise Up, Space Creator, Unpluckable and Anchor. The takeovers are See the Future as primary and Stuff Blocks as secondary, and the page says the build works on both current and previous generation versions.
MyCareer and MyLeague: Your Five on the Floor
The starting lineup page is the one that crosses modes. In MyCareer it says the roster itself is fixed apart from trades and drafts, but who starts is yours to set in three places: the Coach Gameplan section of the coaching tab, the options button on a match before it begins (which also shows Three-point shooting and Defender lineups beside Starter and Bench), and Substitutions from the pause menu once the game is under way. Players are not locked to their listed position, and pressing up on the D-pad during a match swaps players as a shortcut to the substitutions screen. The same Gameplan menu handles positions in MyLeague.
MyLeague: A Team of Your Own
The custom teams page is MyLeague's page. The MyLeague section of the main menu offers three starting points, an expansion team, a custom league built from nothing, or an existing NBA team you edit, and the long route wants a logo, a uniform, an arena and a home city of your own before any player is picked, and the page expects that to take several hours and a few false starts. The short route is Create a Roster under the Features sub-menu, which offers developer and community rosters to copy, edit and share back. Your own created players join a team through the Create a Player menu with copy to team, and a full roster needs a release first. Our mechanics guide puts this page beside the attribute upgrades page and sorts the two by what each change costs, VC and MyPoints against menu time.
Questions Our Pages Answer
Which camera angle is best in NBA 2K23?
Our camera page rates 2K and High highest because they show the most of the court, with Courtside and Side as close seconds, and gives a preset for each.
How do I get past 85 overall?
Earn MyPoints by playing until the attribute cap rises, then spend VC on the newly available upgrade. Difficulty changes, Coach Wayne Graves' quest and shot-making badges all speed the MyPoints up.
Can I change my starting five in MyCareer?
Yes, from Coach Gameplan, from the options button before a match, or from Substitutions in the pause menu. Only trades and drafts change who is on the roster in any significant way.
What These Pages Do Not Cover
None of our five pages covers MyTeam beyond the camera page's note that its presets suit that mode too, and none says anything about the City's affiliations, locker codes, or whether NBA 2K23's online modes are still running, so this hub makes no claim about them. The Paint Beast build is the only build we have; there is no guard, wing or shooting build here and no badge guide beyond the one build's list. The camera page recommends a Courtside angle that does not appear in its own list of nine, so check the menu's names against its presets.
