Grand Theft Auto V is two games sharing one map, and almost every question about it has a different answer depending on which save you are standing in. Story mode has three protagonists, a fixed ending and property that pays weekly; GTA Online has one character you build, ranks that gate everything, and businesses that cost millions before they pay a cent. Our wiki covers close to a hundred pages across both, organised into four category guides, and this hub sorts them by the save they belong to so you do not read heist advice for the wrong bank.
The four category guides each mix the two saves, because a story activity and an Online job are both quests and a story collectible and an Online unlock are both items. The sections below pull them apart. If you are on PC, the two technical pages at the end apply to both.
Story mode: Michael, Franklin and Trevor
The story side of the quests guide lists every activity in the order the campaign unlocks it, from the store robberies and random events you can do before the first cutscene ends, through the missions that open golf, the triathlon, Lester's assassinations, Maude's bail bonds, flight school and the Strangers and Freaks strands, to the Merryweather and Paleto Bay heists and the three endings. The story side of the items guide covers the collectibles by set size, the twelve hidden packages, thirty nuclear waste barrels and submarine pieces, fifty letter scraps and stunt jumps, plus the Duke O'Death and the UFOs; our older collectibles roundup is the one place that also mentions the fifty spaceship parts.
Money in the campaign is the story half of the mechanics guide: the free routes first (the ten easy money methods, the underwater package exploit, the LCN and BAWSAQ exchanges and the assassination schedule that turns each hit into a stock play), then the property list from a $30,000 garage to a $150 million golf club with the payback period on every line. The same guide holds the console cheat codes and their saving restriction, the wanted level system and the Easter eggs. Two roundups from the same era sit alongside it: cheats and secrets, which gathers the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC code lists with the secret weapons and cars, and easy money and cheats, which links the money methods and around forty references in one page.
For the arsenal and the garage, the weapons and armor guide lists every gun and armour pickup with its upgrades, and the vehicles and customization guide walks every class from boats and cycles to super cars and military hardware with their tuning options, which is where the rare spawns and eleven aircraft on the items guide send you for the full catalogue.
GTA Online: one character, ranked and propertied
New players should begin with the GTA Online starter guide, which covers character creation, crews, a first car, first jobs and PvP basics before any of the systems below. The Online half of the mechanics guide then takes over: building a character's stats, the 120-rank ladder and Gerald's Death Metal loop, fencing cars and the Madrazo missions for money, and the three-page Diamond Casino set on membership, chips and hosting. Above those sit the businesses, the nightclub's warehouse and the gunrunning bunker, ranked by what they cost before their first sale.
The Online half of the quests guide is the heist chain. Survival at Rank 15 and Gang Attacks at Rank 18 come first, then the apartment heists from the two-player Fleeca Job through Prison Break to the $1 million Pacific Standard, then the property-gated jobs: Gunrunning Mobile Operations from a bunker, the $2.1 million Diamond Casino heist from an arcade, Cayo Perico from the Kosatka, and the Keinemusik and Moodymann DJ missions that follow. The Online half of the items guide holds what those unlock, the Hydra and Valkyrie, the Stone Hatchet, the Gunrunning and casino vehicle lists, the fifty signal jammers and the daily shipwrecks.
Where all of that lives is the locations guide, which sorts Online property by what is behind the door: a $25,000 garage that only parks cars, an $80,000 to $400,000 apartment with the heist planning room, the ten After Hours nightclubs and four Contract agencies that run as businesses, and the Diamond Casino you enter to start its storyline. For a sense of why Rockstar keeps adding to this side, the revenue milestone report covers the analyst estimate that GTA Online passed $700 million in a single year three years after launch.
Playing on PC
Two pages apply to both saves on PC. The PC settings guide works through the graphics menu, console commands and mods that lift frame rates on weaker hardware, and the PC fixes page covers install failures, launcher errors, crashes and performance problems with workarounds for each. The character transfer page on the mechanics guide is the third PC-specific step, for anyone bringing an Online character over from a console.
Frequently asked questions
Which guide should a new story-mode player read first?
The quests guide, for what is open on day one and which mission unlocks each activity, then the properties section of the mechanics guide before spending the first heist payout.
Which guide should a new GTA Online player read first?
The starter guide, then the money farming and level up pages on the mechanics guide, then the locations guide for a garage or apartment before the first heist.
Do the cheats work in GTA Online?
No. The cheat codes on the mechanics guide are story mode only and disable saving while active. The Online pages describe exploits and glitches instead, most of them from the older console versions.
