Resources

This is the largest bucket in the wiki: 124 pages covering 35 materials across eleven maps, with 499 individual farming coordinates between them. Sorted by map it is a phone book. Sorted by what the material actually demands of you before it will come out of the ground, it turns into a progression, and the progression is the useful thing, because arriving at the right spot with the wrong tool is the most common way to waste a trip in this game.

Thirty-one of these pages carry no coordinates whatsoever, and that is not an oversight. Some materials do not have a location, because you make them.

Tier one: whatever is in your hands

The bottom tier is anything you can strip off a corpse or a plant without special equipment. Chitin is the archetype, harvested off insects and crustaceans with a hatchet on Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth and Valguero. Fjordur bundles it with its neighbour as keratin and chitin, since the same trip yields both, while Aberration keeps keratin separate.

Fungal wood on Aberration and Fjordur is the underground replacement for ordinary timber, and Fjordur's rare mushrooms and raw mutton are gathered rather than mined. Aberration's Plant Species Z and Fjordur's Plant X seeds and Plant Y seeds sit here too, though a sickle makes all three considerably faster.

Tier two: a pick, and knowing where to point it

Most of this bucket lives here. The tool is a stone or metal pick and the difficulty is entirely geographic, which is why these materials have the most map pages.

MaterialMaps we cover
MetalAberration, Crystal Isles, Fjordur, Genesis, Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth, The Center, Valguero
CrystalAberration, Crystal Isles, Fjordur, Genesis Part 2, Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth, The Center, Valguero
ObsidianCrystal Isles, Fjordur, Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth, Valguero
SulfurCrystal Isles, Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth, Valguero
GemsAberration, Crystal Isles, Extinction, Fjordur, Valguero
Silica PearlsAberration, Crystal Isles, Ragnarok, Valguero
SaltCrystal Isles, Lost Island, Scorched Earth

Metal at nine map pages plus a roundup is the most portable knowledge in this bucket, and crystal is close behind at nine. If you only learn two farming routes before changing maps, learn those, because they are the two you will need everywhere.

Tier three: the game names an animal

This is where the bucket stops being about tools. For a large group of materials, a pick works and works badly, and our pages name a specific creature that turns an hour into ten minutes. Reading across the 124 pages, the assignments are remarkably consistent.

BringFor
AnkylosaurusMetal, crystal, obsidian and gems, the whole hard-rock tier
DoedicurusStone, and organic polymer off penguins
MegatheriumHoney and chitin, because it is immune to the bees
TherizinosaurRare flowers, fiber and plant seeds
DunkleosteusAnything underwater: crystal, obsidian, oil
Mammoth or TriceratopsCrops, specifically Rockarrot and Savoroot
SabertoothKeratin, silk and raw mutton
GachaBlack pearls, produced rather than harvested
Rock DrakeGems on Aberration, and Fjordur's Nameless Venom
MagmasaurSulfur, and element shards
MoschopsRare flowers and chitin, and it fits in caves

Rare flowers are the clearest example of why this matters. Our roundup covers seven maps at once, and the per-map pages for Aberration, Crystal Isles, Fjordur, Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth and Valguero all end up recommending the same two animals, a Therizinosaur in the open and a Parasaur for caves, because the plants themselves cannot be harvested by hand at any useful rate.

Honey is the other clean case. Across Crystal Isles, Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth and Valguero the answer is always a Megatherium or a Dire Bear, because the hive fights back and those two do not care. Extinction skips hives entirely and grows its own supply at a Bee Hive.

The crop pages work the same way. Rockarrot and Savoroot each have a roundup and a Ragnarok and Ragnarok page respectively, both pointing at the Highlands and both recommending a Mammoth or Triceratops over your own two hands.

Tier four: the tools you do not have yet

Two late-game tools change what is worth farming at all. A chainsaw multiplies organic yields, and a mining drill does the same for veins and rock.

Oil is the clearest split. Surface oil on Fjordur, Lost Island, Ragnarok and The Center is a pick job, but the oil veins on Lost Island, Ragnarok and Valguero want a pump on top and are infrastructure rather than a trip. Scorched Earth's water veins work identically and matter far more, since on that map water is the thing that kills you.

Organic polymer on Crystal Isles, Fjordur and Scorched Earth is a chainsaw material, harvested off penguins and mantises, and it spoils, which is the reason it is a separate page from the manufactured kind. Silk across Fjordur, Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth and Valguero sits in the same bracket, wanting a sickle or a whip rather than a blade.

Cactus sap deserves a mention for having the most explicit tool ladder of any page here. On Crystal Isles, Fjordur, Lost Island, Scorched Earth and Valguero the instruction is the same: hands or a whip on the small cacti, a chainsaw on the giants.

Tier five: the ones with no location at all

Thirty-one of these pages give you no coordinates, and for a handful of materials that is because there is nowhere to go. Cementing paste is the headline case: across Lost Island, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth, The Center and Valguero the answer is a Mortar and Pestle, a Chemistry Bench or an Equus saddle, and the only place you find it lying around is inside a beaver dam, which our locations guide maps out.

Polymer on Extinction, Lost Island and Valguero is the same story one step further along: it is obsidian plus cementing paste at a bench, which means it is a material made of two other materials on this page.

Black pearls straddle the line. On Aberration, Crystal Isles and Ragnarok there are places to dive, but the pages keep circling back to taming a Gacha and letting it make them for you. Extinction's silica and black pearls page does the same. That is the moment a resource stops being a place and becomes a process.

The endgame materials follow suit. Element on Extinction, Ragnarok and Scorched Earth mostly comes off bosses rather than out of rocks, which is covered in our bosses guide, while Fjordur's element shards and Extinction's crystalized sap are the map-native substitutes.

How to use this bucket

Check the tool before the coordinates. A metal run without an Ankylosaurus, a honey run without a Megatherium or a flower run without a Therizinosaur will technically work and will waste your evening. The creatures themselves are in our creatures guide, the places worth returning to are in locations, and what all this ends up being spent on is in items and mechanics. The wiki hub sorts everything by map.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource is covered on the most maps?

Metal, with nine map pages plus a roundup, followed by crystal on nine. Those two are worth learning properly since every map needs them.

What is the single most useful gathering tame?

The Ankylosaurus, on the evidence of these pages. It turns up in the metal, crystal, obsidian and gem coverage, which is most of the hard-rock tier in one animal.

Why do some resource pages have no coordinates?

Because those materials are crafted rather than found. Cementing paste and polymer are made at a Mortar and Pestle or a Chemistry Bench, and black pearls can be produced by a tamed Gacha instead of dived for.

Where do I get Cementing Paste without a bench?

Beaver dams, which are the one place it appears ready-made. Our locations guide lists them map by map, along with the rule that a dam has to be emptied completely before it will rebuild.
