Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones Locations Guide

While Smithing Stones can upgrade basic weapons, Somber Smithing Stones are used for upgrading the unique armaments in Elden Ring. All the unique weapons you get from the bosses can be upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones. In this guide, we will tell you the location of all the Somber Smithing Stones you can find in Elden Ring.

There are 10 ‘rarities’ of Somber Smithing Stones types in Elden Ring that players can use to upgrade their unique weapons. You can find these Somber Smithing Stones in some locations or purchase them from a smithing master.

Somber Smithing Stone Tiers and Upgrade Levels

Somber Smithing Stones reinforce special and unique armaments one level per tier. Nine numbered tiers take a weapon to +9, and the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone finishes it at +10.

Each tier below lists every map location by region, the enemies worth farming, the merchants that stock it and the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing that unlocks an unlimited supply.

Somber Smithing Stone Prices and Bell Bearings

Every Somber Smithing Stone tier can eventually be bought from the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold, but each pair of tiers is locked behind one of five Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings. Smithing Master Iji, the Troll blacksmith on the road to Caria Manor, sells tiers 1 to 4 without any Bell Bearing, with unlimited stock of tiers 1 and 2 and three each of tiers 3 and 4.

Buying one of every tier to take a single weapon to +9 costs 97,000 Runes, before the blacksmith’s fee at each level. The five Bell Bearings are found in these places:

• Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1]: dropped by the Fallingstar Beast at the end of the Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid.
• Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2]: dropped by the pair of Crystalians at the end of the Altus Tunnel, in the ravine south of the Minor Erdtree on the Altus Plateau.
• Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [3]: on a corpse just outside the First Church of Marika in the Mountaintops of the Giants.

• Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]: on a corpse at the cliff edge near the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula.
• Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [5]: on a corpse inside the small church before the Beside the Great Bridge Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula.
• Iji’s Bell Bearing: on Iji’s table in the Kingsrealm Ruins once Blaidd’s questline ends. It unlocks Somber Smithing Stones 1 to 4 at the Twin Maiden Husks.

Somber Smithing Stone [1] Locations (+1)

Unlike most higher-level Somber Stones, the base Somber Stone 1 is not that rare. Here are all the locations where you can get them in Elden Ring. Although you might already know, it’s important to note that Somber Smithing Stone is used for special weapons (armaments). For regular weapons, simple Smithing Stones are used.

The Lake

Make your way south of the Rose Church to find a corpse in a chair. You can get 2x Somber Smithing 1 from here, but you must kill the patrolling crab nearby.

Stormveil Castle

You must defeat the Lion Guardian in Stormveil Castle to get another Somber Smithing Stone 1 in Elden Ring. You will find him in the southern grounds of the castle, guarding the entrance to the Limgrave Tower Bridge.

Limgrave Colosseum

The next Somber Smithing Stone 1 location is technically past the Limgrave Colosseum wall in the south. You can also reach the location by fast-traveling to the Deathtouched Catacombs Site of Grace or heading west from the Saintsbridge Site of Grace.

There are some ruins in the marked location that you need to explore. Climb to the top of the ruins to find a grey Scarab. Kill and loot it for a Stone.

Limgrave Tunnels and nearby Ruins

1) The Limgrave Tunnels are an excellent location to farm the basic Smithing Stone 1 item in Elden Ring. However, this area also has a piece of Somber Smithing Stone 1 to find.

2) You can get another Somber Smithing Stone 1 in the same area by killing an exploding Scarab between the Murkwater Coast and the Artist’s Shack Sites of Grace in Elden Ring.

3) Cross the bridge between Agheel Lake North and Waypoint Ruins and immediately take a right to go south. Keep going and you will find a corpse in a chair that can be looted for a Somber Stone 1.

Note that you will encounter the Night’s Cavalry on the bridge if you travel at night.

Church of Dragon Communion

When you reach the Church of Dragon Communion, reach the island’s southwest side. There is a Teardrop Scarab here that is patrolling the cliffside. Kill it for an easy Somber Smithing Stone 1 piece in Elden Ring.

Morne Tunnel

There are a couple of pieces of Somber Stone 1 that you can find while exploring the Morne Tunnel in Elden Ring. This is a great location to farm the basic Smithing Stone 1 item as well as Somber Smithing Stone 2.

Castle Morne

There is a single piece of Somber Smithing Stone 1 in Castle Morne. Reach the southern tower at the location marked on the map above and drop down to sea level to find the Stone.

Battlemages

Battlemages are one of the best enemy types to farm for Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring. They have a 1.5 percent chance to drop Somber Stones 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8 upon death.

You can find a lot of Battlemages to farm in Raya Lucaria Academy and Academy Crystal Cave.

Where to buy unlimited Somber Smithing Stone 1 in Elden Ring?

Smithing Master Iji and Twin Maiden Husks are two merchants that will sell you Somber Smithing Stone 1 for Runes in Elden Ring.

Smithing Master Iji

Smithing Master Iji sells you an infinite amount of Somber Smithing Stone 1 as long as you have enough runes. You can find the War Counselor Iji on the road to Caria Manor.

Twin Maiden Husks

The Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold might not give you infinite Somber Smithing Stones 1, but they are all you have when buying Stones in Elden Ring. You have to wait until the merchant restocks the inventory before you can start buying again.

You must give the Twin Maiden either Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 1 or Iji’s Bell Bearing to unlock the ability to buy Somber Smithing Stone 1 for 2000 Runes each.

Iji’s Bell Bearing can be acquired after you complete Blaidd’s quest, while the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 1 can be acquired by defeating the Fallingstar Beast in Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid (pictured above).

Somber Smithing Stone [2] Locations (+2)

Somber Smithing Stone 2 pieces are used to upgrade your unique weapons and shields to +2 level in Elden Ring. You will need plenty of them once you have used Somber Smithing Stone 1 to get your armaments past +1 in the game.

You will mostly find pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 2 scattered across the Weeping Peninsula (which lies to the south of Limgrave) and the Liurnia of the Lakes.

Liurnia of the Lakes

1) There are three pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 2 in the lake surrounding Raya Lucaria Academy in Elden Ring. A Scarab drops the first one on the little island west of Glintstone Dragon Smarag. Note that this Scarab can teleport all over the place, so you will need to be quick.

2) Scale the cliff here to kill another Scarab for another Somber Smithing Stone 2.

3) The third Scarab in the area can be found while exploring the ruins of a massive tower on the marked location. Do note that you will have to fight some Albinauric before you can approach the tower.

Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel

1) If you move northwest from the Mausoleum Compound Site of Grace, you will encounter a Scarab that drops a Somber Smithing Stone 2 upon death. If you reach the location and there is no Scarab, it is probably hiding in the nearby bushes.

2) When you move northeast in the Liurnia of the Lakes, you will reach a vast network of tunnels known as the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.

Here, take the elevator down and go right to find a chest with a Somber Smithing Stone 2. This will be near the Martyr Effigy which leads to a Crystalian boss encounter.

3) Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel has several pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 2. Go a bit further until you reach a giant statue near a Site of Grace. Loot the chest behind the statue for another upgrade material.

Liurnia Highway

1) Head east from the Night’s Cavalry to enter the forest. Here, you can encounter a Scarab behind the two giant rocks for a Somber Smithing Stone 2. Be ready to jump back after killing the Scarab because it explodes upon death.

2) Head northeast from Liurnia Highway South Site of Grace to reach the cliffs. Make your way to the top of the cliffs to find a corpse in a chair that can be looted for another piece of Somber Smithing Stone 2 in Elden Ring.

Stormveil Castle

1) After defeating the Crucible Knight, follow the wall of the arena to find a corpse with a Somber Smithing Stone 2 in Elden Ring.

2) Make your way to the Armament Storage and keep walking on the ledge until you see a corpse right next to a statue. Loot the stone from this corpse.

These areas serve as the best location to acquire this material during the early game.

Caria Manor

Caria Manor is the best location to farm Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring. There are a lot of Fingercreepers here, and each one of these spider-like creatures is guaranteed to drop either a Somber Smithing Stone 2, 4, or 7 on defeat.

Gael Tunnel

Glintstone Miners are humanoid creatures that have a 1 to 2 percent chance of dropping Somber Smithing Stone 2 upon death. You can find a lot of them inside Gael Tunnel, making it a good farming location for Somber Stones in Elden Ring.

Castle Morne

1) There are at least two pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 2 that you can find in Castle Morne. You can farm more by exploring the Morne Tunnel and killing the Glintstone Miners.

2) Head southeast of Castle Morne to reach the beach. There is a corpse here that you can loot for a piece of Somber Smithing Stone 2 in Elden Ring. You do not have to provoke the Spirit Jellyfish in the waters unless you want to engage them in combat.

Siofra River

1) Make your way to the Worshippers’ Woods Portal in the center of the Siofra River. There is a corpse here that can be looted for a Somber Smithing Stone 2 piece.

2) Similarly, there is another corpse near the Cliffside Portal in the east that contains another stone.

Where to buy Somber Smithing Stone 2 in Elden Ring

There are a couple of merchants in Elden Ring that sell Somber Smithing Stone 2 in exchange for Runes.

Smithing Master Iji is a Troll NPC who serves as a Blacksmith and is found in the northwest of Liurnia of the Lakes. He will sell you Somber Smithing Stone 2 for 3000 Runes.

Twin Maiden Husks is a merchant you can find in Roundtable Hold that sells Somber Smithing Stone 2 for 3000 Runes each in Elden Ring.

Take note that Twin Maiden Husks will not be selling Somber Smithing Stone 2 at first. You need to give them either Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 1 or Iji’s Bell Bearing to unlock Somber Smithing Stone 2 in their shop inventory.

Somber Smithing Stone 2 Bell Bearing Location

To find the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 1, go to Caelid and head into the Sellia Crystal Tunnel towards the north of the area. Head inside and take the first ladder to go up. The tunnel’s structure is fairly straightforward. Follow the path until you come upon a pair of large wooden doors.

Opening the door will start the boss fight with the Fallingstar Beast. This boss has a large AOE and will charge toward you constantly. Once you take it out, it’ll drop the bell bearing, which you can give to the Twin Maiden Husks to acquire an unlimited amount of Somber Smithing Stone 2 and Somber Smithing Stone 1.

Somber Smithing Stone [3] Locations (+3)

Somber Smithing Stone 3 is a vital item to upgrade special weapons and shields to +3 in Elden Ring. To use Somber Smithing Stone 3, your weapon or shield level needs to be at least +2 which is achieved by using pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 2.

The Somber Smithing Stone 3 pieces can be found majorly around the Liurnia of the Lakes and The Academy of Raya Lucaria region in Elden Ring. There are several ways that you can get your hands on this Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stone 3 and all of them are covered in this section.

Sellia Crystal Tunnel

Sellia Crystal Tunnel is an excellent location to farm Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring.

This network of tunnels contains a lot of Glintstone Miners that have a chance of dropping a Somber Smithing Stone upon defeat.

Not only will you be able to farm Somber Smithing Stone 3 but also Somber Smithing Stone 7.

To get to the Sellia Crystal Tunnel, you need to travel to the Dragon-Burnt Ruins Site of Grace. Once there, take the stairs down to the chest and open it to teleport to the Sellia Crystal Tunnel. There is a battlemage here that drops the item as well. This is a great place to acquire Somber Smithing Stone 3 fairly early on in the game. This place is accessible before you defeat Margit and Godrick.

Caria Manor

Caria Manor is one of the most guarded places in Elden Ring. You can get there by heading north on the road leading from the Gate Town. Caria Manor has two Somber Smithing Stone 3 that you can find.

1) The first one is located Southwest of the region at the top of the tower. The place is guarded by the Iron Virgin and upon defeating him, you will find Somber Smithing Stone 3 from the corpse.

2) If you travel Northeast from where you found the first stone, you will come across another corpse at the end of the alley. Looting this corpse will give you another Somber Smithing Stone 3.

The Academy of Raya Lucaria

1) In The Academy of Raya Lucaria, you will find the first Somber Smithing Stone 3 in the Church of Cuckoo. Once you are inside the church, you will be greeted by two Marionette Soldiers.

Upon defeating them, you need to head to the back of the room where the altar is located. A corpse will be located next to the wall behind the altar, giving you a Somber Smithing Stone 3.

2) You can get another Somber Smithing Stone 3 in the same area by heading to the Debate Parlor Site of Grace and checking the base of the big stone altar.

Academy of Raya Lucaria has another Somber Smithing Stone 3 that you can find by traveling to the Raya Lucaria Gate East Site of Grace.

From the Site of Grace, you need to head Southeast to the marsh located below the East Gate Bridge. You can then find a corpse placed on the chair that will give you the Somber Smithing Stone 3.

Liurnia of the Lakes

1) Upon reaching The Four Belfries Site of Grace, you need to travel to the top of the cliff and find a big chair with the corpse. Looting this corpse will give you the Somber Smithing Stone 3.

Beware of the Lake Lurkers that will attack once you take the Smithing Stone from the corpse.

2) Liurnia of the Lakes has another Somber Smithing Stone 3 that you can get by traveling to the Ruin-Strewn Precipice Site of Grace. Once there, you need to take the path North, and Somber Smithing Stone 3 can be found on top of the Ruins.

3) To get this Somber Smithing Stone 3, you need to travel to the Grand Lift of Dectus Site of Grace located at the northern end of Liurnia in Elden Ring.

Once there, you need to head Northwest and look for a Scarab that drops the Stone upon death.

4) After traveling to the Carian Study Hall Site of Grace in Liurnia of the Lakes, you will find another Somber Smithing Stone 3. A Scarab will be located on top of the cliff next to the road coming from the site of grace. Killing the Scarab will give you another Somber Stone 3.

Ainsel River

Situated a little South of the mainland, Ainsel River also has one Somber Smithing Stone 3 that you can grab.

For that, you need to travel to the Ainsel River Downstream Site of Grace and head west until the path ends along the river. Here, you will find Somber Smithing Stone 3 from a corpse.

Where to buy Somber Smithing Stone 3 in Elden Ring

Smithing Master Iji

Head towards the Kingsrealm Ruins located on the northwest corner of the Liurnia of the Lakes to find Smithing Master Iji. His exact location is marked on the map above.

You can interact with him to purchase a Somber Smithing Stone 3 for 4000 Runes. To do so, you first need to offer him Iji’s Bell Bearing.

Twin Maiden Husk

Once you reach the Roundtable Hold, you will have the option of buying Somber Smithing Stone 3 from Twin Maiden Husks for 4000 Runes each.

Keep in mind that the inventory of Twin Maiden Husk will be locked from the beginning and you need to have Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (2) to unlock the item at this vendor.

How to find Somber Smithing Stone 3 Bell Bearing and Iji’s Bell Bearing in Elden Ring?

To acquire Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 2, you must clear the Altus Tunnel. The mine entrance sits in the ravine south of the Minor Erdtree on the Altus Plateau, the same ravine that leads up to the Shaded Castle. Follow the river below the Minor Erdtree to the south and you will find the entrance cut into the ravine wall.

Work through the tunnel to the boss door at its end, where a pair of Crystalians, one armed with a spear and the other with a ringblade, guard the exit. Defeat both and the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 2 drops, which allows you to purchase unlimited quantities of Somber Smithing Stone 3 and 4 from the Twin Maiden Husks.

Alternatively, you can bring Iji’s Bell Bearing back to him. It is found on a table in the Kingsrealm area after you complete Blaidd’s quest line and kill him. You can now give the Bell Bearing to either the Twin Maiden Husks in the Round Table hold or to Master Iji in Kingsrealm.

Somber Smithing Stone [4] Locations (+4)

A major chunk of the Somber Smithing Stone 4 locations is found in the Caelid Region which is the best location to farm them. You will also find more Somber Smithing Stone 4 spread across the Leyndell, Royal Capital, Liurnia, and Limgrave regions. These areas serve as the best early game areas to acquire this material.

The late game areas of Deeproot Depths, Ainsel River, and Siofra River also have decent farming locations for the Somber Smithing Stone 4.

Liurnia of the Lakes

The Liurnia of the Lakes location is the best area to acquire Somber Smithing 4 Stone early on. This area is relatively easier to traverse than others we’ve listed below.

1) In Liurnia of the Lakes, enter the Miners’ caves till you reach the Ruin-Strewn Precipice Site of Grace. Defeat the Teardrop Scarab found here that will give off a Somber Smithing Stone 4.

2) Go to The Ravine Site of Grace near its northern entrance. The Somber Smithing Stone 4 will be present on a corpse here.

Raya Lucaria Academy

Go to the Academy Rooftops in Raya Lucaria Academy and drop down through the broken wooden floors to reach a room with a Crystallized Crab.

Keep going further to find a smaller room with even more crabs. This is where you find your next Somber Smithing Stone 4 in Elden Ring.

Gael Tunnel

1) Keep your eyes on the ceiling while exploring the Gael Tunnels. This is because you will eventually enter a cavern where a Giant Land Octopus is hanging from above.

Once you defeat this creature, check the nearby walls for a Somber Smithing Stone 4. You will also find a corpse with the Cross-Naginata spear here as well.

2) The Gael Tunnel is one of the best locations to farm Somber Smithing Stones 4 in Elden Ring. This is because you find a lot of Glintstone Miners in the tunnels who have a chance of dropping Somber Smithing Stone 4 and Somber Smithing Stone 2 upon death.

3) You will come across a hunched tree near Gael Tunnel at the location marked on the map above. A Teardrop Scarab will be stuck in the tree root here, giving off the Somber Smithing Stone 4.

Near the Minor Erdtree

In the northwest of the Caelid region, cross the cliffs east of the Minor Erdtree. You will find a corpse in a chair that can be looted for a Somber Smithing Stone 4 piece in Elden Ring.

Caelid

1) Go to the Sellia Hideaway northeast of Caelid, where you will encounter a corpse. Loot the Somber Smithing Stone 4 from this corpse.

2) Go to the Swamp of Aeonia and move south till you reach the point marked on the map. Here, you will find a dead body that possesses this stone.

3) Move to the south of Caelid till the point shown on the map. A Teardrop Scarab will drop the required Somber Smithing Stone 4 piece here.

4) In the west of Caelid, a Teardrop Scarab will drop the Somber Smithing Stone 4.

Dropped by Lion Guardians

1) In the southern part of Caelid, you will encounter an aggressive beast, the Lion Guardian, who drops a Somber Smithing Stone 4 upon defeat.

2) You will reach the Redmane Castle in Caelid after passing the Impassable Greatbridge Site of Grace, where two Lion Guardians will be patrolling. Defeat them to acquire the Somber Smithing Stone 4.

Siofra River

In the Nokron Eternal City of Siofra River, you will find a corpse in the building marked on the map. You can loot the stone from this corpse.

Where to buy Somber Smithing Stone 4 in Elden Ring

Somber Smithing Stone 4 can also be purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks merchant in the Roundtable Hold, or from Smithing Master Iji in Liurnia. Each stone costs 6000 Runes. However, to buy the stone from the Twin Maiden Husks, you will first have to bring them the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 2.

Where to find Somber Smithing Stone 4 Bell Bearing in Elden Ring

Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 2 drops from the two Crystalians that guard the end of the Altus Tunnel. The tunnel is in the ravine south of the Minor Erdtree on the Altus Plateau, on the way to the Shaded Castle. Follow the mine down past the miners to the large wooden doors to reach the boss arena.

Defeat both Crystalians to acquire the Bell Bearing. Take it back to the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold to purchase an unlimited quantity of Somber Smithing Stone 3 and 4.

Somber Smithing Stone [5] Locations (+5)

Somber Smithing Stone 5 takes special armaments from +4 to +5 in Elden Ring. Most pieces sit in Volcano Manor, the Siofra River and Caelid, with a few more in Leyndell, the Shaded Castle and around the Minor Erdtree.

Volcano Manor

1) The first location will take you to a scarab spawn location, which you will find on the rooftop. Defeat it and collect the dropped Somber Smithing Stone 5.

2) The second location will also take you to a scarab spawn location, this time to a lava river. Defeat the Scarab and collect the dropped Somber Smithing Stone 5.

3) Inside the Volcano Manor’s dungeon area, you’ll notice a corpse dangling from the edge. To get up toward it, you must take the cage lift to get to the top.

Next, you must take the first right to lead you toward the corpse. Loot the corpse to obtain another Somber Smithing Stone 5.

Siofra River

Three pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 5 can be found in the Siofra River. This underground area can be accessed by going to the Limgrave region and using the lift at the Siofra River Well.

You can alternately head to the Caelid region and use the lift at the Deep Siofra Well.

1) The first Somber Smithing Stone 5 can be found by looting the corpse in the puddle at the marked location. This will be guarded by a Red Wolf roaming the area.

2) You must head toward the river’s highest point, where you will find a large stone ruin. Search the area inside to find a corpse holding the Somber Smithing Stone 5.

3) Make your way to the bridge, and you will encounter a Mimic Tear at the marked location. Defeat it to get a Somber Smithing Stone 5 piece.

Caelid

1) This location can be found by heading toward the Gaol Cave in the Caelid region. You can enter the cave through the entrance inside the scarlet lake. Move East from Fort Gael to find the lake and the cave entrance.

An Imp Statue Seal will lock the area, so you need two Stonesword Keys to break the seal and access the area. Once inside the cave, you can collect the Somber Smithing Stone 5.

2) The second Somber Smithing Stone 5 location in Caelid is inside the Canyon to the region’s eastern part. To get there head southwards from the Deep Siofora Well Grace.

You will eventually find a School of Graven Mages you can defeat before obtaining the Somber Smithing Stone 5. You must search and loot a corpse inside the canyon beside the giant, white crystals.

Redmane Castle

The only Somber Smithing Stone 5 you can find here is inside the monument structure in the northern section of Redmane Castle.

Make your way to the marked location to loot a corpse for the Somber Stone 5. You will know you are in the right area by spotting the chairs.

Leyndell, Royal Capital

1) This Somber Smithing Stone 5 location is found at the Sealed Tunnel, which you can enter by traveling toward the Capital Outskirts.

The entrance of the Sealed Tunnel is near the outer side of the western gate of the Leyndell Royal Capital, towards the southern end of the lake nearby.

Head to the chamber with the lift and reach its end to find two Illusory Walls. Dispel them to open the southern access point, leading to a cavern.

An Abductor Virgin will protect the lower area while overgrown roots will cover the environment. Drop down to the lower section and head to the northwestern wall of the cavern. The Somber Smithing Stone 5 is on this wall in Elden Ring.

2) Fast-travel to the Erdtree Sanctuary Site of Grace and then go to the marked location to find a small room. There is a corpse inside that you can loot for 3x Somber Smithing Stone 5.

The Shaded Castle

Head to the Shaded Castle valley between the Altus Plateau and Mt. Gelmir. Go toward the castle’s outer courtyard and search its western end.

Near the western rampart of the courtyard, you will find a tree. Search behind the tree to find a dead body carrying the Somber Smithing Stone 5.

Minor Erdtree

2) There are some unmarked ruins east of the Minor Erdtree that you need to head to next in the game. Head to the location marked on the map and find a corpse in a chair. Loot the dead body for a Somber Smithing Stone 5.

You can alternatively reach the same ruins by fast-traveling to the Outer Wall Battleground Site of Grace. Exit through the gate and start heading west.

Where to get Somber Smithing Stone 5 Bell Bearing in Elden Ring?

In Elden Ring, you can offer The Twin Maiden Husks different Bell Bearings and unlock certain items for purchase that are otherwise only available by exploring the Lands Between. This vendor can be found in the Round Table Hold.

To unlock unlimited quantities of Somber Smithing Stone 5 and 6, you must offer them Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 3. To locate this Bell Bearing, you must go to the First Church of Marika in the Mountaintops of the Giants area.

From there, head north and find the item you’re looking for on a body in the snow. Once you pick it up, simply offer it to the Twin Maidens, and you’ll be able to buy an unlimited amount of Somber Smithing Stone 5 and 6.

Somber Smithing Stone [6] Locations (+6)

To upgrade special weapons and armaments from +5 to +6 level, you must find the Somber Smithing Stones 6 in the Elden Ring. These can be found on corpses, looted from areas, and dropped from bosses. You can even purchase them from merchants in exchange for Runes.

Volcano Manor

Volcano Manor has special ruins and fortresses that house three Somber Smithing Stones 6.

1. For the first one, you need to travel to the Guest Hall Site of Grace and travel Southeast into the alleyway. From there, you need to take the stairs leading to the roof. On the roof, there will be a corpse that will yield you Somber Smithing Stone 6.
2. You need to head towards the Prison Town Church Site of Grace, where you will find another Somber Smithing Stone 6. Once there, you must first travel east and north, following the covered pathway along the lava river. At the end of the pathway, you will find Somber Smithing Stone 6 from a corpse.

Mt. Gelmir

Located west of Altus Plateau, Mt. Gelmir houses two pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 6.

1. You need to travel to the Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite Site of Grace. From the Site of Grace, you need to head south, where you will encounter Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast. Defeating him will reward you with one Somber Smithing Stone 6.
2. Mt. Gelmir has another Somber Smithing Stone 6 that you can grab, and to get it, you need to head to First Mt. Gelmir Campsite Site of Grace. Once there, you must travel southeast and look for a corpse on a chair. The corpse will be on the cliff and give you the Somber Stone.

Leyndell Royal Capital

Leyndell, Royal Capital, is one of the best locations to farm Somber Smithing Stones 6 in Elden Ring. You can find up to six pieces here.

1. The first Smithing Stone can be found by traveling to the Divine Bridge Site of Grace in Leyndell Royal Capital. From there, you need to take the corridor heading Northeast. Once the corridor ends, you will find Somber Smithing Stone 6 from the corpse on the left side.
2. For the second Somber Smithing Stone 6, you need to head further Northeast from where you found the last Smithing Stone. A corpse will await you beside the wall that will yield Somber Stone.
3. The third Somber Smithing Stone 6 can be located by traveling to the Leyndell Catacombs Site of Grace. The path running Northeast will lead you to the corpse lying on top of a wooden platform. Looting the corpse will give you the Smithing Stone.
4. Another Somber Smithing Stone 6 can be found if you travel further Northeast on the same path that you got the last Somber Smithing Stone. This one will be dropped by a Scarab, which can be found close to a large staircase on the right side of the path.
5. After traveling to the Cathedral of the Forsaken Site of Grace, you will find the fifth Somber Smithing Stone 6 in Leyndell Royal Capital. You need to look for a corpse located close to the statue, which will drop the Smithing Stone.
6. The last Somber Smithing Stone 6 can be found if you take the bridge Southeast from the Cathedral of the Forsaken Site of Grace leading to the Forbidden Lands. A scarab will be waiting for you on the bridge, which needs to be killed to get Smithing Stone.

Deeproot Depths

1. For the first Somber Smithing Stone 6, travel to the Nameless Eternal City Site of Grace in Deeproot Depths. From there, you must travel Northeast in the woods and look for a scarab that will drop the Smithing Stone.
2. Travel Northwest from the Nameless Eternal City Site of Grace, where you must look for another Scarab. This scarab will be close to the Crucible Knight Siluria boss and drop Somber Smithing Stone 6.
3. Travel Northeast from where you found the last Scarab, tracing the path along the edge of the Deeproot Depths. You need to find a corpse along the tilted structure that will drop the Somber Smithing Stone 6.
4. For the last Somber Smithing Stone 6 in Deeproot Depths, you must travel to the Across the Roots Site of Grace. From there, you must travel Southeast and look for four Ant Queens. The boss has her Ant Cave close by from where you can find Somber Stone from the corpse.

Ainsel River

If you are exploring different regions for Somber Smithing Stone 6, Ainsel River is a good place to visit. It houses three Smithing Stones.

1. The first Somber Stone can be found after traveling to the Grand Cloister Site of Grace. You then need to travel Northeast from the Site of Grace until you reach the south end of Lake of Rot. Here, you will find Somber Smithing Stone 6 from a corpse.
2. Travel to the Ainsel River Downstream Site of Grace and head Northeast. Inside the room in the ruins, you will find Somber Smithing Stone 6.
3. Travel to the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace for the third Smithing Stone. Find your way to the bridge north and look for a scarab hiding in the leaves at the base of the stairs. This scarab will drop Somber Smithing Stone 6.

Where to buy Somber Smithing Stone 6 in Elden Ring?

To get an unlimited supply of Somber Smithing Stone 6 in Elden Ring, you need to reach the Mountaintops of the Giants. Head straight to Zamor Ruins Site of Grace in the Mountaintops of the Giants and move in the southwest direction until you reach an area leading to a downward staircase. This area will be right outside the entrance of the First Church of Marika.

You will find a chest holding the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (3). Offer this item to the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold to buy Somber Smithing Stones 5 and 6. Somber Smithing Stone 6 costs 12000 Runes each.

How to Get Somber Smithing Stone 6 in Early Game?

If you want to get the Somber Smithing Stone 6 in the early game, head to Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid and defeat the Fallingstar Beast. Once defeated, the boss drops many somber smithing stones.

Somber Smithing Stone [7] Locations (+7)

Like the other stones, the Somber Smithing Stone 7 is important for upgrading unique weapons and shields in the Elden Ring. These stones increase the level of special armaments from +6 to +7, making them deadlier in combat.

Ainsel River

The region of Ainsel River is the best place to visit to farm some Somber Smithing Stones 7 pieces in Elden Ring. This area is further divided into two parts known as Nokstella, Eternal City, and the Lake of Rot. You can find up to six pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 7 here.

1) To start your exploration of the stones from the Eternal City, you have to move toward the ledge that provides you with a clear way of the Ainsel River. You will find a corpse on the cliff’s edge, so interacting with it gives you a Somber Smithing Stone 7.

2) Another stone can be collected by going toward the building marked by an open window in this area. You have to enter the building to find the chest that contains the stone.

3) The third stone is found in a room that Silver Tears guards. You have to kill the enemy to enter the room and loot the chest for the stone.

4) You will receive another piece of Somber Smithing Stone 7 after defeating the Malformed Star found in the region of the Ainsel River.

5) The northwestern side of the lake contains a small landmass area; there, you will find the corpse with the stone. You can reach this area by moving north from the Alabaster Lord location.

6) The last stone is collected from a corpse found in the ruins of the Lake of Rot. You can find the corpse by moving north from the Dragonkin Soldier location.

Deeproot Depths

You can collect up to 5 pieces of the Somber Stone 7 from The Deeproot Depths. Let’s go through the areas in detail.

1) For the first stone, move toward the cave on the northwest side of the area. Runebear guards the entrance toward the cave, so you have to defeat your enemy before exploring the cave for the stone.

2) For the next stone, move northwest from the Runebear location toward a hollow building. You can reach the building if you move west from Walking Mausoleum location.

3) To bag another piece of stone, move a little north from the sunken building toward the tree branches. The corpse containing the stone can be accessed through the branches.

4) Make your way south from the location of Crucible Knight Siluria and explore the church for a corpse body to get the stone.

5) Lastly, if you move north from the location of Erdtree Avatar enemy, then you will come across a waterfall. You must drop down from the waterfall toward an area containing a crafter.

Volcano Manor

The Volcano Manor area is a part of the Mt. Gelmir region in the Elden Ring. After progressing enough in the game, you can get to this area, so sit tight during your playthrough.

1) To get the Somber Smithing Stone 7 from Volcano Manor, you must defeat Godskin Noble to reach a ledge that provides you with the stone. However, the ridge is guarded by an Abductor Virgin, so you must also take care of this boss before getting this upgrading material from the corpse.

To reach this ledge, move from the Temple of Eiglay Grace toward the northwestern side after crossing the bridge, and you will come across the boss guarding the ridge.

2) Accessing the Imp Seal Statue can get the next stone. This room is on the opposite side of the Throne room in the Volcano Manor. However, to access this room, you need two Stonesword keys.

Subterranean Shunning-Grounds

You will find just two stones in this area in the following places:

1) The first stone can be obtained by moving toward the underground area on the west side of Omen Ogre boss. You have to look for a room that a Lobster will guard. Inside the room, you will come across multiple large pipes. You have to get inside to find the corpse present on the ground and get the stone.

2) You will find the other stone from the same room full of large pipes. You just have to move deep into the room to find a broken pipe that contains a Teardrop Scarab. Killing the creature will provide you with one stone.

Forbidden Lands

The Forbidden Land is the connecting point between the Mountaintops of the Giants and the Altus Plateau.

1) At the midway of the path, you will come across a colossal skull that holds a corpse. Interaction with the body provides you with the stone. Additionally, right after crossing this hill, you must fight the Black Blade Kindred boss in the Forbidden Lands.

Mountaintops of the Giants

The Mountaintops of the Giants lead you toward the Consecrated Snowfield, also known as the snowy area. You can explore the snowy mountains to gather up to five pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 7 in the Elden Ring.

1) For the first stone, walk toward the Zamor Ruins, where you will encounter the Ancient Hero of Zamor. From there, you must move south to find a frozen tree with a Teardrop Scarab attached. Killing this creature will land you another piece of this unique material.

2) If you move toward the southeastern side from the Ancient Hero of Zamor location, you will come across a cliff guarded by Three Hands. You must get past the obstacles to find the corpse hanging on the ridge. You need to interact with the corpse to gain the stone.

3) From the Cave of the Forlorn, you can move west toward the open snowy grounds in the Elden Ring.

The cave is the same place where you take on the Misbegotten Crusader, and your journey toward the west will help you come across a tree that contains a white Scarab. Make a quick end of this creature to obtain the stone.

4) Surprisingly, you will come across two Lion Guardians at Castle Sol, and both will drop Somber Smithing Stone 7 upon their death. You can defeat these enemies quickly to farm your stones before exploring the other parts of the castle for other valuable rewards.

Crumbling Farum Azula

The Crumbling Farum Azula is a small region that allows you to gather three pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 7 along with the much-needed Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 4.

1) The first Somber Stone 7 is the easiest to locate as you must move west from the Draconic Tree Sentinel location toward the Great Bridge. You will find a corpse in the middle of the bridge to obtain the first piece of stone in this area.

2) To get the second Somber Smithing Stone 7, you must find another corpse by going toward the cliffs. These cliffs are found below the Great Bridge section, and you can reach them by using the Site of Grace located on the Rooftop of the Dragon Temple.

3) To collect the third stone, make your way toward the heavily-ruined section of the area. This part of the map is easy to locate as you must move between Dragon Temple and Tempest-Facing Balcony Grace Site.

You will find the corpse on the floating debris that you must interact with to gather the stone.

Where to buy Somber Smithing Stone 7 in Elden Ring?

A fun way of crafting unlimited Somber Smithing Stone 7 is by getting the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 4. To get this, you must start at the Foot of the Forge in the Mountaintops of the Giants area and teleport to Crumbling Farum Azula.

Start from the Crumbling Beast Grave Site of Grace, head left, and exit the area. Then, move across the crumbling path in the west direction and enter the opening from the end.

This area will get you to Crumbling Beast Grave Depths Site of Grace. Exit the area to enter the hallway with corpses lying in the middle. Take the path in the northwest corner of the hallway. Descend from the stairs and exit to Tempest Facing Balcony Site of Grace.

Move north from the site of grace, and you will find the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] in front of you.

Take the item to the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold and pay them 16,000 runes to buy a single Somber Stone 7 from this NPC in Elden Ring.

Somber Smithing Stone [8] Locations (+8)

Once you’ve upgraded your special armaments to +7, it is time to find Somber Smithing Stones 8 to upgrade them to +8 in Elden Ring. Some Somber Stones can be looted from corpses, while others require you to find and kill Scarabs. You can buy them from a merchant if you have Runes to spare.

Dragonbarrow

Starting our list of areas, the region of Caelid has several things to offer, including the Somber Stone 8 in Elden Ring. You need to reach the center part of this area to get your hands on this material.

1) The Somber Stone 8 can easily be obtained by moving southwest from the direction of the Divine Tower of Caelid. Keep walking in the mentioned direction until you come across a cliff that contains a fallen tree.

You will come across a Teardrop Scarab, and yes, you have guessed it right. You must eliminate the Scarab to get the first Somber Smithing Stone 8 in Elden Ring.

Subterranean Shunning-Grounds

The Shunning Grounds are located below Leyndell City. This underground area in Elden Ring contains several resources that make you healthy regarding runes and items.

1) To get another Somber Stone 8, travel to the Underground Roadside Site of Grace. From here, the directions become very easy.

You just have to leave the room to move toward the left side, and you will come across a giant door. Make your way past the entrance to the ladder to collect the Somber Smithing Stone 8.

Lake of Rot

Two corpses in the Lake of Rot give you some Somber Smithing Stone 8 pieces in Elden Ring.

1) You can find one hanging next to a small island in the Lake. The place is safe enough to stand, so you do not worry about falling off the cliff into the Lake.

The site is directly north of the Dragonkin Soldier boss’ location, so reach the area to collect the Somber Smithing Stone 8 from a corpse.

2) Moving south from the Dragonkin Soldier location will lead you toward the edge of the Lake. There, you will find a broken pillar that contains a corpse hanging toward the inside of the Lake. You can gather the Somber Stone 8 by interacting with the corpse.

Moonfolk Ruins

You can get one Somber Stone 8 by exploring the northeast section of the Moonfolk Ruin.

1) This section of the ruins contains an underground area you can only explore after revealing the path. The floor comprises some hidden stairs that take you toward the treasure room.

However, the stairs only become visible after you hit or roll over the floor. Here, you can find the Somber Smithing Stone 8 in Elden Ring.

Mountaintops of the Giants

You can get nearly a dozen Somber Smithing Stone 8 pieces by exploring the Mountaintops of the Giants in Elden Ring.

While this is a late-game region, it is one of the best farming locations for Somber Smithing Stone 8. Most stones here need you to find and kill a Teardrop Scarab.

1) For the first piece of Somber Smithing Stone 8, you must move east from the Vyke, Knight of the Roundtable boss location.

At the end of the mountains, you will come across two lobsters that protect the Somber Stone 8. So eliminate these to bag yourself another stone.

2) The next Somber Smithing Stone is located inside Castle Sol. From the location of 2x Lions, you need to move northeast toward the church. You will find a corpse hanging on the left side of the church, so you have to interact with it to gain the stone.

3) From the location of Tibia Mariner, move east toward Castle Sol. You will find a corpse hanging from the mountain that allows you to bag another Somber Smithing Stone 8 in Elden Ring.

4) To get the fourth stone, rush toward the northeast side from the location of Golem Archer. You will find a white Scarab walking around a small cliff. The death of this creature will drop the stone.

5) The fifth one is located on the west side of Putrid Avatar. You can collect several items from the same place.

You need to move toward the pillar to encounter a huge white Scarab. Dispose of the creature you gain another Somber Smithing Stone 8 in Elden Ring.

6) Head west from where you encounter the Red Wolf of Radagon until you encounter a large rocky structure. Scale these rocks to find a Somber Smithing Stone 8 at the top.

7) The next stone piece can be found close to the Colossal Hand. You have to move west from the boss’ location toward to rocky area to find the Scarab.

8) Moving east from the Rotten Duelist location, a scarab hangs around a giant stone. Take care of it to obtain one more Somber Stone 8 in Elden Ring.

9 and 10) The Yelough Anix Tunnel in the Consecrated Snowfield area contains two pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 8 in Elden Ring.

After entering the tunnels, you must find a room with several ladders. The first Stone 8 piece is embedded in the wall here.

For the second Stone 8 piece, go to the smaller room on top of the first room where you found the first stone.

Crumbling Farum Azula

The Crumbling Farum Azula allows you to gather two more pieces of Somber Stone 8 in Elden Ring.

1) For the first Somber Smithing Stone 8, you must find the balcony on the south side of the Dragon Temple Rooftop Grace. There, you will find a corpse that you need to loot.

2) The second one can be collected from another corpse. Head west from the Dragon Temple and reach the upper crumbled segment. You will see a corpse hanging over a ledge that can be looted for a Somber Smithing Stone 8.

Miquella’s Haligtree

Reaching the marked location on the map allows you to obtain the only present Somber Smithing Stone 8 in Miquella’s Haligtree.

1) The site takes you to a building you must explore to find the corpse suspended from the balcony. You have to interact with the corpse to pick yourself another Somber Stone 8.

Where to buy Somber Smithing Stone 8 in Elden Ring?

Similar to Somber Smithing Stone 7, you can buy your Somber Smithing Stone 8 pieces from Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold in Elden Ring. However, you must ensure that you have Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (4) to give to Twin Maiden Husks. After handing the Bell Bearing (4) to Twin Maiden Husks, you can buy a single piece of Somber Stone 8 for a whopping 20,000 Runes.

Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (4) can be found in Crumbling Farum Azula. It is on a corpse near the edge nearest to the Tempest-Facing Balcony site of grace.

Somber Smithing Stone [9] Locations (+9)

Somber Smithing Stone 9 is an incredibly rare upgrade material in Elden Ring. It levels up your special weapons and shields to +9, Following that you need Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone to reach +10 and max out your armaments.

Note that you will only need Somber Smithing Stone 9 pieces after using Somber Stone 8 to upgrade your special weapons or shield. Once that is done, you must scour each location mentioned below to obtain Somber Stone 9 in Elden Ring.

Somber Smithing Stone 9 is a rare resource and is something you won’t be able to find during the early stages of the game. Hence, all the areas listed below are ones you’ll come across during the mid to late game.

Crumbling Farum Azula

You should make your way to the Crumbling Farum Azula as soon as possible. Not only does this region have up to four pieces of Somber Smithing Stone 9 to find in Elden Ring, but it is also where you get Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing 5 which allows you to purchase Somber Stone 9 pieces for Runes.

1) You can obtain the first Stone from this area by moving south from the Crumbling Beast Grave Site of Grace. After moving just a few steps, you will come across a tree and at the base of it, you will find the Somber Smithing Stone 9.

2) The best way to reach the second piece of Somber Stone 9 is to move southeast from the Dragon Temple Site of Grace.

You must reach the temple’s lowest part after crossing Azula Beastman Ashes along the way. You will find a corpse hanging on a cliff at the marked location. Interact with the corpse to find the Stone.

3) Move west from the Dragon Temple Site of Grace to encounter another Somber Smithing Stone 9. This one is close to the Site of Grace, so move there to find a corpse next to a statue. You need to interact with the corpse to get the Stone.

4) From Besides the Great Bridge Grace, you need to travel northwest to gain the last piece of Somber Smithing Stone 9 of this area.

You will see the site that contains several trees, and on the east side of the Stone, Beastmen’s Clever can also be acquired. A Beastmen guards the Stone, so you must eliminate it to get the Somber Smithing Stone 9 from a corpse next to a broken pillar.

Mountaintops of the Giants

The Mountaintops of the Giants is an excellent place to farm Somber Smithing Stones 9 in Elden Ring. It’s the region where you can collect five of them.

1) The first Stone 9 can be obtained by fighting Astel, Stars of Darkness and clearing the Yelough Anix Tunnel.

Surprisingly, there are so many other things that you can loot from this area, including a Somber Smithing Stone 8. So get to the place prepared and fight off the boss to get the rewards.

2) Right toward the south direction from the large Runebear enemy, you will find a huge rock. You must climb the rock to reward yourself with another piece of Somber Smithing Stone 9 in Elden Ring.

3) Make your way toward the southwest area from the Erdtree Avatar location. The long bridge will connect one part of the region with another. You can explore the mid-section of the bridge to find a corpse that sits on a chair with your Somber Smithing Stone 9.

4) You can get a bunch of stones, including the Somber Stone 9, by moving west from the location of Putrid Avatar. You need to find the invisible Scarab near the large pile of stones to gain the stone. Find the creature and strike it down for a stone drop.

5) The last one is on the far north side of the Mountaintops of the Giants. You need to move north from the Wandering Mausoleum found in the Consecrated Snowfield area.

At the end of the snowy area and just before the mountains, you will find another sitting corpse that you must interact with to gain the remaining Somber Smithing Stone 9 of this region.

Miquella’s Haligtree

The area of Miquella’s Haligtree is complicated as the tree branches extend from one part to another. Among these branches, you get to fight several enemies and also get the opportunity to collect three Somber Smithing Stones 9 in Elden Ring.

1) Moving south from the Haligtree Town Plaza Site of Grace, the first stone can be obtained. You will come across a building being guarded by three Ghouls.

To enter the building, you must eliminate the enemies and enter the room to find a corpse that contains the Somber Smithing Stone 9.

2) Make your way toward the northwest area from the location of Erdtree Avatar. There you will find a room that contains three Crystalians and a corpse. For the piece of Somber Smithing Stone 9, you must interact with the corpse inside the room.

3) Lastly, if you move straight in the north direction from Erdtree Avatar, you will find a small room. Here you will encounter another Crystalian and a corpse. You have to take care of the enemy before interacting and gaining the stone from the corpse.

Caelid

The Caelid region allows you to find and store two more Somber Smithing Stone 9 in Elden Ring.

1) The first Somber Stone 9 is found across the bridge and can be reached by moving northwest from the location of Flying Dragon Greyll which is found in the Dragonbarrow area of Caelid. The stone is next to the Farum Greatbridge Site of Grace. You just have to move south to kill a Scarab.

2) You need to move south from the Godskin Apostle location toward the tower’s location. You will find corpses in a circle, and one of the bodies contains the Somber Smithing 9. So you just have to interact with each body to find your target.

Siofra River

You can find one more Somber Smithing Stone 9 by exploring the region of the Siofra River.

1) To reach the stone, move north from the Palace Approach Ledge-Road Grace to reach the entrance of the cave.

Inside the cave, you will find a body next to a scarab. So here, you do not have to kill the scarab but interact with the body to collect the Somber Smithing Stone 9.

Lake of Rot

The Lake of Rot is a good place when it comes to collecting different Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring.

1) You can find one Somber Smithing Stone 9 by exploring the central part of the Lake of Rot.

The location of the stone is on the northeast side of Alabaster Lord. You must find the raised ruins area to collect the stone in Elden Ring.

How to farm Somber Smithing Stone 9

In the base game the larger Somber Smithing Stones, 8 and 9, cannot be farmed, since no enemy in the Lands Between drops them. Shadow of the Erdtree changes this: Horned Warriors and Horned Shamans in the Land of Shadow have a small chance to drop both, which is covered in the DLC section below. If you have picked through all the areas listed above and are not playing the expansion, your best bet is to purchase Somber Smithing Stone 9. We have described the process below.

Where to buy Somber Smithing Stone 9 in Elden Ring

There is only one place in Elden Ring where you can buy Somber Smithing Stone 9 and that is Roundtable Hold.

However, before making the trip ensure that you have the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (5) in your inventory to give to the Twin Maiden Husks to unlock the ability to buy Somber Stone 9 in their inventory.

You will need to pay 25,000 to Twin Maiden Husks for a single piece of Somber Smithing 9 in Elden Ring. This merchant can provide you with a gazillion other things, but you need runes. So knowing the best ways to farm runes is important as well.

Where to find Somber Smithing Stone 9 Bell Bearing in Elden Ring

To get the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (5) to acquire unlimited amounts of Somber Smithing Stone 9, you need to make your way to Crumbling Farum Azula, which is the final place you visit in the game. Once you’re there, make your way to the Church which is located near The Great Bridge.

There are several enemies on the path to the church so make sure you come prepared. Explore the church until you find a corpse. The bell bearing will be on the corpse. Giving the bell bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks will allow you to purchase unlimited quantities of Somber Smithing Stone 9.

Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone Locations (+10)

Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are special upgrade materials that allow you to strengthen your special weapons and shields by a whole +10 in Elden Ring.

Once your armaments have reached +9 with the help of Somber Smithing Stone 9, your next (and final) step to max out your weapons and shields will be to start searching for Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones.

Note that the Somber Ancient Dragon Stone pieces differ from the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones. The latter is specifically for regular armaments.

There are a total of 8 Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in the base game, and Shadow of the Erdtree adds six more, covered in the DLC section below. Similar to the other Smithing Stones, be ready to travel across the map to find all of them.

Miquella’s Haligtree Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones

1. Head into the Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree dungeon, and go to the Prayer Room Site of Grace in Elden Ring. From there, go down the path that leads to the city and run to the end of the path. Then, go into the pavilion to your right and defeat the soldiers. Run up the support beam that’s positioned diagonally, and it will lead you to a small alcove with a chest inside that contains the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
2. Once you have defeated Malenia, get the Unalloyed Gold Needle from her scarlet flower and take it to the Scarlet Aeonia within the same room. You will get a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in return.
3. Return to the Prayer Room Site of Grace and go down the path below you. There will be a Putrid Avatar on the path, guarding a doorway.

Instead of going toward the doorway, go down the path to your right until you find a corpse to loot for another Somber Dragon Stone.

Mountaintops of the Giants Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones

The Mountaintops of the Giants allow you to access the Consecrated Snowfield and provide you with two more Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring.

1. Head to the Consecrated Ground on the northern side of the Consecrated Snowfield. In this area, you’ll find a ghost town called Ordina, Liturgical Town. On the frozen river southwest of this town, Anastasia, Tarnished-Eater, will do her third invasion. She will drop a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone if you defeat her here. This is the earliest Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone you can find, so if you haven’t got that far in Elden Ring, this is where you should look first.
2. The other Somber Ancient Stone in Elden Ring can be obtained as a reward for completing Latenna’s questline. She awards the stone after you summon her in front of the Albinauric Woman.

Moving north from the Walking Mausoleum in the Consecrated Snowfield, you can easily find the castle.

Crumbling Farum Azula Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

You will be farming Crumbling Farum Azula a lot in Elden Ring for a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and several Somber Smithing Stone 8 and Somber Stone 9.

1. Make your way to the Dragon Temple Rooftop Site of Grace. From there, head towards the plaza to the southeast. You will see a Farum Azula Dragon at the end of the plaza. Defeat the dragon and go inside the gazebo behind him to find the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

Leyndell Royal Capital Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

1. Head to Leyndell, Ashen Capital, and go to the main Site of Grace inside in Elden Ring. Go inside the building to the west (past the dragon). Climb the ladder to reach the upper area to find a corpse next to a gargoyle. Loot that dead body for another Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

Siofra River Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

For the last Somber Ancient Stone, you have to move toward the palace located in Siofra Region.

1. Head to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint, located in Mohgwyn Palace. Go towards the giant statue and look below it to find a chest containing the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

Can You Buy Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring?

There is no Bell Bearing available in Elden Ring that you can give Twin Maiden Husks to buy Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones. So, the only way to get them is to look for them in the world. There is also no location to farm infinite Somber Ancient Dragon Stones. Your only bet to get more of this upgrade material is to start a New Game Plus in Elden Ring.

Somber Smithing Stones in Shadow of the Erdtree

The Land of Shadow adds no new Somberstone Bell Bearings and no new vendor, so buying still runs through the Twin Maiden Husks. What it does add is a healthy spread of mid and high tier pickups and, for the first time, enemies that drop the top tiers. Horned Warriors and Horned Shamans drop tiers 7 and 9 at roughly 1.6 percent and tier 8 at about 3.2 percent, Golem Smiths drop tiers 7 and 8, and Spider Scorpions occasionally drop tiers 4 and 5.

• Somber Smithing Stone 5: on a corpse at a bridge watchpoint in Castle Ensis, by a tree in the Ulcerated Tree Spirit area of the Shadow Keep, and two in Enir-Ilim, one near the broken stairs and one below a ledge guarded by a Shadow Undead.
• Somber Smithing Stone 7: on a corpse at a dead end past the first gate in the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past, and from a Teardrop Scarab north of the Site of Grace at Rauh Base.
• Somber Smithing Stone 8: four around the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past, three inside and one from a scarab outside, two in the Shadow Keep, one from the Bloodfiends in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, and one in Taylew’s Ruined Forge.
• Somber Smithing Stone 9: four in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, including one beside the Site of Grace where the Tarnished invader appears, one below the Viaduct Minor Tower lift and one past the Fire Knight beyond the Giant Bat bridge from the West Rampart, plus one to the right as you leave the Specimen Storehouse lift in the Shadow Keep and one on a body behind you when you first arrive in Enir-Ilim.

Six more Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are in the expansion, which nearly doubles the base game’s supply of +10 upgrades.

• Ghostflame Dragon, Gravesite Plain: west of the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace.
• Ghostflame Dragon, Scadu Altus: north of the Fort of Reprimand.
• Ghostflame Dragon, Cerulean Coast: south of the Cerulean Coast Site of Grace.
• Ancient Dragon Senessax, Jagged Peak: drops two.
• Enir-Ilim: on a corpse at the broken stairs.

How to have an infinite supply of Somber Smithing Stones

There is a finite supply of Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring. What happens if you have collected all of them and still have weapons you want to upgrade? Well, that is where Bell Bearings come into play. The play is simple; Collect the Somberstone Miner’s bell bearings and give them to Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable hold. Once you have given the Bell Bearings, you can purchase Somber Smithing Stones for a certain amount of runes. You can give 5 Bell Bearings to Twin Maidens for Somber Smithing Stones up to 9. Sadly, for Somber Smithing Stone 10 (Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone), you will have to search the Lands Between for them as you can’t purchase them.

While collecting Somber Smithing Stone Bell Bearings will take some time and effort, I believe this one-time investment will be more beneficial for you, especially when upgrading multiple weapons and builds in Elden Ring. Instead of searching for each of these Somber Smithing Stones, having a constant supply for a price will always be a better option, so I recommend going that path.
