Diablo 4 Dry Steppes Region Guide
The Dry Steppes occupy Sanctuary's northwestern corner, north of Kehjistan and west of the Fractured Peaks, with Scosglen on the far side of Kotama Grasslands. Our waypoints page describes it as a desert wasteland of lava rivers, salt flats, sandy beaches and geothermal pools where the locals fight to survive.
The campaign brings you here for Act 3, The Making of Monsters. Ked Bardu on the northern edge is the main city, and it is also where a Barbarian picks up the Masters of Battle priority quest at level 15. Everything that pays Renown in the region is counted below, with each row priced at what a lone altar, dungeon or stronghold is worth according to our walkthroughs.
| Dry Steppes icon | Count | Worth of a single one |
|---|---|---|
| Altars of Lilith | 33 | 10 Renown, a little XP and a stat bonus the whole account keeps |
| Strongholds | 3 | 100 to 120 Renown, a town, a waypoint and in two cases new dungeons |
| Dungeons | 21 | A Codex of Power aspect plus 30 Renown the first time through |
| Waypoints | 8 | Free fast travel, two of them locked behind strongholds |
| Cellars | 23 | One guaranteed chest of gold, materials or gear |
| Emote statues | 6 | A temporary buff for the right emote |
What only the Dry Steppes have
The Fallen Temple in Chambatar Ridge is the second of the two capstone dungeons, the one that opens World Tier 4 once you beat Elias inside it at level 70. The first Fields of Hatred lies against the western border, and our PvP guide sends newcomers here rather than to the Kehjistan zone; the Alzuuda waypoint sits at its entrance.
Two smaller exclusives are worth knowing. Reddamine is the herb that grows only here, according to our materials table, and Saraan Caldera is the region's world boss arena, one of the five where Ashava, Avarice and the Wandering Death can appear. The region also holds the Dark Ravine, whose Aspect of Might is named by more of our build guides than any other aspect, sixteen of forty.
Dry Steppes strongholds
| Stronghold | Level on our pages | Boss | What clearing it opens |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Onyx Watchtower | 33 | Captain Ezmin, after four bandit Lieutenants | A waypoint and 120 Renown |
| Temple of Rot | 46 | Molqarth, the Hungerer in two forms | 100 Renown and the town returns |
| Ruins of Qara-Yisu | 49 on the walkthrough, 50 on the region page | Utulku, the Voice Below | Two dungeons, a waypoint and 120 Renown |
The Onyx Watchtower is the one to take first. Its walkthrough calls it a bandit checkpoint with several ways in, and the Armor Vendor northeast of it is there for anyone struggling with Ezmin. The Temple of Rot belongs to a cannibal cult and sits beside the Fields of Hatred, while Qara-Yisu asks you to destroy three Infernal Spires before Utulku shows himself. Our two pages disagree by one level on when Qara-Yisu opens, so treat the higher figure as the safe one.
Dry Steppes dungeons
Twenty-one dungeons feed the Codex of Power from this region, and the split is close to even: four aspects each for Rogues, Druids and Sorcerers, three each for Barbarians and Necromancers, and three that every class can use. Five of the twenty-one end on an objective rather than a boss, and the Tomb Lord waits at the end of six of the rest.

Dry Steppes waypoints
Eight of Sanctuary's 35 waypoints are here. Ked Bardu in the north is the city you will keep coming back to, Jirandai sits near the middle of the region, and Alzuuda in the southwest is the closest point to the Fields of Hatred. Farobru, Fate's Retreat and Hidden Overlook fill out the map, and the last two, The Onyx Watchtower and the Ruins of Qara-Yisu, only light up after their strongholds fall. Our Dry Steppes waypoint page walks to all eight.
Altars of Lilith and emote statues
The region's 33 Altars of Lilith are spread across thirteen sub-zones, from the Scarred Coast down to the Fields of Hatred, and two of them stand inside strongholds, one at the Ruins of Qara-Yisu and one at the Temple of Rot, so they cannot be claimed until those are cleared. The altar page walks them in map order. The six emote statues are grouped in four sub-zones, the Scarred Coast, the Accursed Wastes, Chambatar Ridge and Khargai Crags, and each Faded Plaque wants a specific emote in return for a short buff.
Side quests, rare spawns and cellars
Four of our quest walkthroughs are set here. Reject the Mother starts from a Torn Note in Abahru Canyon after the Whittling Sanity story quest, Keeping the Old Traditions from a Lonely Offering lying just east of the Temple of Rot, Salt Begets Salt from Jargal outside Jirandai, and Blood and Sweat only appears once Qara-Yisu is yours and you are level 45. Genbar, the Shrine Keeper is the Act 3 boss you meet at the Tusmaa Rift.
Four rare monsters spawn in the region with guaranteed high-power drops: Almunn carries the Infernal Edge for Barbarians and only shows at night, Bhotak drops the Necklace of Inevitability, Pitiless Gur drops Gur's Freezing Armor and Zarozar drops the Bloodspiller's Helm. Two of the eight Purveyors of Curiosities trade here, in Kotama Grasslands and the Untamed Scarps. Kotama Grasslands is also the densest cellar ground in the region, five in a row according to our cellar map, out of 23 across the Dry Steppes.
