Locations
Four of our Diablo 4 pages are maps rather than walkthroughs: the 160 Altars of Lilith, the 15 strongholds, the 35 waypoints and the 131 cellars. They share a map screen and little else, so this guide sorts them by what a single one hands you when you reach it, from a permanent stat your whole account keeps down to a chest you open once and forget.
Renown is what ties three of the four together. Our pages price an altar at 10 Renown and a stronghold at 100 or 120, and Renown in turn buys the ten extra points in the skill point budget, 20 of the 220 Paragon points, and the extra potion charge that our healing potion guide places at the 300 Renown tier. Cellars pay no Renown that any of our pages mention, which is why they finish last.
| Icon | How many | What one of them pays | Who keeps it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Altar of Lilith | 160 | +2 to one core stat, +5 to your Obol cap or +1 Paragon point, plus 10 Renown and a little XP | Every character on the account, and it is not reset by a season |
| Stronghold | 15 | 100 or 120 Renown, the townsfolk return with merchants and quests, and in six cases a waypoint or new dungeons | The Renown is shared, the cleared town is not |
| Waypoint | 35 | Free fast travel, usable even from inside a dungeon | The character that found it; an alt that skips the campaign starts with the major towns only |
| Cellar | 131 | One guaranteed chest of gold, crafting materials or gear, and XP | Nobody; it is loot, not progress |
Altars of Lilith: the only icon your next character inherits
The altar page counts 160 statues and gives each one a single reward: +2 Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence or Willpower, +5 to the Murmuring Obol cap, or +1 Paragon point, always with 10 Renown and some XP on top. The page's grand totals come to +68 in each of the four stats, +100 to the Obol cap and +5 Paragon points. Because the bonus is tied to the account rather than the character, and because our alts page lists altars among the things a new character inherits, this is the collection to finish first.
Our writers recommend clearing them region by region rather than at random, and starting where there are fewest. The regional pages each carry a map and a walking order.
| Region | Altars | Where they cluster | Map |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractured Peaks | 28 | Five in the Frigid Expanse, then four in the Desolate Highlands and another four along Sarkova Pass; the three stronghold areas hold one apiece | Fractured Peaks altars |
| Kehjistan | 31 | Seven in the Amber Sands, six in the Scouring Sands, five in the Southern Expanse | Kehjistan altars |
| Dry Steppes | 33 | Four apiece in Kotama Grasslands, on the Scarred Coast and up in the Untamed Scarps; two stand inside strongholds | Dry Steppes altars |
| Hawezar | 34 | Six sub-zones with four altars each; the smallest region has the joint-highest count | Hawezar altars |
| Scosglen | 34 | Six in the Highland Wilds, four in Northshore, and the longest walk of the five | Scosglen altars |
Strongholds: the one icon that redraws the map
A red skull on the map means a stronghold is nearby. Our stronghold map puts three in every region, each with its own objective and a boss at the end, and describes what nothing else on this list does: the place changes afterwards. Villagers move back in, merchants open, side quests appear, and six of the game's 35 waypoints only light up once the stronghold around them is cleansed. Several also open dungeons, two at the Ruins of Qara-Yisu and Malnok, the level 38 Oblivion behind Eriman's Pyre, and the Underroot beneath Tur Dulra, which is also the stronghold a Druid must clear before the Spirits of the Lost Grove quest hands out Spirit Boons.
| Region | Stronghold | Level on our pages | Final boss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractured Peaks | Malnok | 18 | Frosthorn, Ice Clan Champion |
| Fractured Peaks | Nostrava | 18, easier after 30 | Negala with Kozira and Torvala |
| Fractured Peaks | Kor Dragan | 25 | Nilcar, Forgotten Bishop |
| Scosglen | Moordaine Lodge | 20, our walkthrough suggests 48 | Fionnir, the Beast of Moordaine |
| Scosglen | Hope's Light | 25, our walkthrough suggests 48 | Tidewitch Ne'gana |
| Scosglen | Tur Dulra | 30 | Baelgemoth, Infernal Tormentor |
| Dry Steppes | The Onyx Watchtower | 33 | Captain Ezmin |
| Dry Steppes | Temple of Rot | 46 | Molqarth, the Hungerer |
| Dry Steppes | Ruins of Qara-Yisu | 49 or 50, our two pages differ | Utulku, the Voice Below |
| Kehjistan | Alcarnus | 45 | Rashta Reborn |
| Kehjistan | Altar of Ruin | 45, our walkthrough suggests 48 | Dark Cardinal Maldul |
| Kehjistan | Omath's Redoubt | 47 | High Priestess Hadar |
| Hawezar | Crusaders' Monument | 35 | Crusader Champions |
| Hawezar | Eriman's Pyre | 40 | Duz'Agur, Eriman's Bane |
| Hawezar | Vyeresz | 40 or 42, our two pages differ | Dianthus |
Where the region page and the walkthrough disagree, the table shows both. The regional stronghold pages give a level the stronghold is set at, while the walkthroughs tend to say when they found it comfortable, which is why Moordaine Lodge and Hope's Light carry a 20 or 25 beside a 48. The stronghold map itself also points out the side quests parked next to several of them: Phases of the Moon alongside Blood and Sweat at Qara-Yisu, Kith and Kin at the Onyx Watchtower, Lost Cause and Left Behind inside Vyeresz, and the Gathering Legions event that spawns in the same area as Kor Dragan.
Waypoints: free travel, six of them behind a skull
The waypoint map lists 35 across the five regions, the first of them unlocked in the middle of Kyovashad once the story lets you through the gate. Travel between them costs nothing, and the Dry Steppes waypoint page adds that you can teleport to one from inside a dungeon when your bags are full or your gear needs repairing. The catch is the six that sit inside strongholds: they are on the map, but not yours until the skull is gone.
| Region | Waypoints | Locked behind a stronghold | Map |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractured Peaks | 7 | Nostrava | Fractured Peaks waypoints |
| Scosglen | 8 | Tur Dulra | Scosglen waypoints |
| Dry Steppes | 8 | The Onyx Watchtower, plus the Ruins of Qara-Yisu, the only region with two | Dry Steppes waypoints |
| Kehjistan | 6 | Altar of Ruin | Kehjistan waypoints |
| Hawezar | 6 | Vyeresz | Hawezar waypoints |
Waypoints are the one collection here that does not reach across your account. Our alts page files map progression under things a new character starts without, and says a character that skips the campaign begins with only the major town waypoints revealed, provided the account has unlocked them once.
Cellars: a chest and nothing else
Cellars are the dungeon's small cousin. The cellar map describes them as single-objective spots that take minutes: usually an elite with its minions, sometimes a puzzle or a short task, always ending at a guaranteed chest of gold, crafting materials or gear. They show as a trapdoor icon, and only once you are close, so they are found by walking rather than by planning. There are 131 of them, and the page's regional counts add up exactly.
| Region | Cellars | Densest ground on our page |
|---|---|---|
| Fractured Peaks | 29 | Desolate Highlands with six; Bitter Cave in the Pallid Glade opens for Necromancers only |
| Dry Steppes | 23 | Kotama Grasslands, where five can be farmed in a row |
| Hawezar | 30 | About four per sub-zone, the region our writers pick for farming without travelling |
| Kehjistan | 26 | Amber Sands |
| Scosglen | 23 | Strand, with the highest ratio of cellars in the region |
If you want cellars for loot rather than for map completion, two mechanics pages narrow the list: best cellars to farm names Ravan's Folly, the Frozen Tunnel, Bleak Basement, Tsepilova Larder, the Derelict Tunnel and the Scorched Cellar for legendaries and Treasure Goblins, and our legendary farming page opens with a Kyovashad cellar loop.
Where the other map icons live
Dungeons, the icons that pay the most Renown after strongholds, have their own dungeon guide, and the emote statues that dot three of the five regions sit under each region in the regions guide. The orange circles of world events and the world boss arenas are covered in how events work and the bosses guide. For everything the game keeps between characters, start at the Diablo 4 hub.
Frequently asked questions
Do Altars of Lilith carry over to a new character?
Yes. Our altar page says the bonuses are tied to the account, so every alt starts with them, and that the altars are not reset when a season begins. You find each of the 160 once.
Which waypoints cannot be used until a stronghold is cleared?
Six of the 35: Nostrava in the Fractured Peaks, Tur Dulra in Scosglen, the Onyx Watchtower together with the Ruins of Qara-Yisu in the Dry Steppes, Altar of Ruin in Kehjistan and Vyeresz in Hawezar.
Do cellars give Renown?
Our cellar page lists a chest and XP as the reward and never mentions Renown. If Renown is the goal, altars, dungeons, side quests and strongholds are where our pages put it.
