Items
The useful question about any Diablo 4 item is not how to get it but how to get it again. A Codex of Power aspect costs a dungeon clear once and then gold plus Veiled Crystals every time after, on any character you ever make. An extracted aspect is used up the moment it is imprinted. A unique has no recipe at all. Materials and currencies replenish at very different speeds, and a handful of items exist exactly once per account. Our 153 item pages sort neatly along that line, so that is how this guide is arranged: from the things the game will hand you again for pocket change to the things it never hands you twice.
| Kind of item | What a second copy costs | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| Codex aspect | Gold and Veiled Crystals at any Occultist, as many times as you like | 96 |
| Extracted aspect | Another legendary drop carrying it; each extraction imprints once | 10 drop-only aspects, plus any Codex aspect you want at a higher roll |
| Unique | Another drop from World Tier 3 or 4; nothing crafts one | 53 uniques across 18 pages |
| Crafting material | Salvage, herb nodes or Helltide time; the stock is shared by every character | 8 pages and a best-materials roundup |
| Currency | Play for four of them, a season for one, real money for one | 6 |
| Consumable or socketable | A vendor recipe: the Alchemist, the Jeweler, Cormond's Wagon or the Purveyor | 7 |
| Once per account | No second copy; the mounts and one sword | 5 |
Codex aspects: paid for once, imprinted forever
Our Codex of Power page sets the rule: the Codex switches on with your first dungeon clear, every aspect it holds can be imprinted on Rare or Legendary gear at an Occultist for gold and Veiled Crystals, and the catch is that a Codex roll is never the maximum value. The aspect location list adds that the Codex holds 115 aspects and that they carry over between characters, which is what makes them the cheapest power in the game. Ninety-six of our 106 aspect pages are Codex aspects, and the tables below give each one's category, the dungeon that unlocks it, and how many of our 40 build guides call for it, so you can see which clears are worth doing first. The dungeons guide sorts those same dungeons by what their doors demand.

Extracted aspects: one imprint, then gone
The second kind of aspect never enters the Codex. It arrives already imprinted on a legendary drop, an Occultist extracts it into your inventory, and it can be imprinted exactly once. Both our aspect overview pages say the same two things about them: the rolls are better than Codex rolls, and Nightmare dungeons are where the drops come from. That is also why players extract aspects they already own in the Codex, trading a permanent recipe for a single higher number. Ten of our aspect pages are drop-only: Abundant Energy, Armageddon, Binding Embers and Concentration for the Sorcerer, Burning Rage for the Barbarian, Bursting Venoms, Cruel Sustenance and Elusive Menace for the Rogue, Exposed Flesh for the Necromancer, and the Aspect of Fortune, which neither of our master tables lists at all. Only five of them are named by any build guide, and never more than twice, so a build that leans on one is a build with a farming step in it. The builds guide ranks all 40 by exactly that.
Uniques: no recipe, only another drop
Our unique items overview is blunt about the drop rate and about where to stand: World Tier 3 and 4, Nightmare dungeons above tier 20 for the guaranteed legendary at the end, and the Helltide mystery cache for a shot at three or more legendaries with a unique among them. Two have fixed sources on that page, Mother's Embrace from Lilith in World Tier 2 and The Butcher's Cleaver from the Butcher. Everything else is chance, and there is no way to make one, which is why our build guides treat uniques as a wish list rather than a shopping list. Across the 40 builds, Raiment of the Infinite is named eight times, Harlequin Crest seven, and Iceheart Brais and Condemnation five each; no other unique reaches four.
| Slot page | Uniques listed | Names |
|---|---|---|
| Helms | 5 | Andariel's Visage, Cowl of the Nameless, Deathless Visage, Harlequin Crest, Vasily's Prayer |
| Chest armor | 6 | Blood Artisan's Cuirass, Insatiable Fury, Mad Wolf's Glee, Rage of Harrogath, Raiment of the Infinite, Razorplate |
| Gloves | 6 | Fists of Fate, Frostburn, Gloves of the Illuminator, Gohr's Devastating Grips, Grasp of Shadow, Howl from Below |
| Pants | 4 | Eyes in the Dark, Iceheart Brais, Storm's Companion, Temerity |
| Boots | 4 | 100,000 Steps, Esu's Heirloom, Greaves of the Empty Tomb, Penitent Greaves |
| Amulets | 5 | Battle Trance, Deathspeaker's Pendant, Esadora's Overflowing Cameo, Melted Heart of Selig, Word of Hakan |
| Rings | 4 | Hunter's Zenith, Mother's Embrace, Ring of Mendeln, Ring of Starless Skies |
| Swords | 4 | Doombringer, Fields of Crimson, Ramaladni's Magnum Opus, The Grandfather |
| Axes | 3 | Ancients' Oath, The Butcher's Cleaver, Waxing Gibbous |
| Maces | 2 | Hellhammer, Overkill |
| Daggers | 2 | Asheara's Khanjar, Condemnation |
| Bows | 2 | Skyhunter, Windforce |
| Scythes | 2 | Black River, Bloodless Scream |
| Staves | 3 | Greatstaff of the Crone, Staff of Endless Rage, Staff of Lam Esen |
| Wands | 1 | Flamescar |
That is 53 uniques over fifteen slot pages, with the class-agnostic ones gathered again on the unique weapons and unique armor roll-ups. One sword sits outside the unique system entirely: the Infernal Edge, dropped by the night-only rare Almunn on the Sacred Coast of the Dry Steppes after he turns into Jebtaa, and recorded on our page rolling up to 870 item power, the highest we have seen on anything.
Materials: the stock every character shares
Materials are the one category where a second copy gets cheaper the longer you play, because the pile is account-wide and every alt adds to it. What varies is the faucet. Three of our eight material pages describe salvage-only materials, three describe Helltide-only ones, and two describe things you pick off the ground anywhere.
| Material | The only way to get more | What it is spent on |
|---|---|---|
| Coiling Ward | Salvaging legendary armor above 400 item power | Legendary armor upgrades and imprints |
| Abstruse Sigils | Salvaging legendary rings and amulets | Legendary upgrades past rank 2 |
| Forgotten Souls | Helltide only: Screaming Hell Veins, Tortured Gifts, and Cinder chests | The final ranks of legendary upgrades |
| Fiend Rose | Helltide only, growing around Tortured Chests | Weapon upgrades and the top elixir tiers |
| Scattered Prisms | Treasure Goblins and world bosses | Adding a socket |
| Gallowvine | Bright herb plants in every region | Potion upgrades and every elixir recipe |
| Crushed Beast Bones | Bears, wargs and werewolves, thickest in the Highland Wilds | The level 30 potion upgrade and elixirs |
| Monster parts | Four enemy families: beasts, demons, the undead, and Paletongue carriers | Potions and elixirs |
The best materials roundup adds the ones without a page of their own, Angelbreath, Biteberry, Silver Ore, Veiled Crystal and Baleful Fragment, and ranks Forgotten Souls at the top. The NPCs guide covers the Blacksmith, Alchemist and Occultist counters where all of this gets spent.
Currencies: six, on six different clocks
| Currency | How the next one is earned | The detail worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | Selling what you do not wear; drops scale with World Tier | Everything a vendor does costs it |
| Murmuring Obols | World events, never guaranteed | Spent only at the Purveyor of Curiosities, where our page puts the legendary chance at about 10 percent |
| Aberrant Cinders | Helltide kills | Halved on death, wiped when the Helltide ends; a Mystery Chest wants 175 |
| Red Dust | Seeds of Hatred refined in the Fields of Hatred, reached from the Alzuuda and Denshar waypoints | Buys transmogs, mount cosmetics and Cursed Scrolls |
| Smoldering Ashes | Battle Pass tiers, 27 of them on the free track | Season-bound |
| Platinum | Real money, 100 per dollar, or Battle Pass tiers | Cosmetics only, no power |
Obols have one fixed price on our pages: a Whispering Key is 20 of them, gold is refused, and each key opens one Silent Chest. Where the Purveyor, the Fields of Hatred and the Helltide sit in the wider progression is the mechanics guide's subject.
Consumables and socketables: a recipe and a vendor
Seven pages cover items that are made rather than found, and each one names the counter. Elixirs come from the Alchemist after the level 10 priority quest in Kyovashad, last 30 minutes, and stack one at a time; the Acrobatics line on our page shows how the second copy climbs, from a Weak version at level 35 for 1,000 gold, one Angelbreath and fifteen Gallowvine to a Heady one at level 100 for 3,000 gold and five Fiend Roses. Gems come in seven types and five tiers, and the Jeweler Karatia, met at level 20, turns three of a lower tier plus gold into one of the next. Glyphs open with Paragon at level 50 and World Tier 3, start Magic at radius 2 and Rare at radius 3, and level only on Nightmare dungeon XP.
Malignant Hearts are Season 1 socketables for Infested jewelry, dropped by Malignant monsters or crafted at Cormond's Wagon for 35 Ichor, which is roughly two hearts salvaged; the best hearts list explains why the black Wrathful ones, the only kind that fits any socket colour, lead the season. The Scroll of Escape is hardcore-only and appears from level 20. And the Holy Chalice is a quest item that our page treats as a bug report: change World Tier mid-way through Sister Octavia's three quests and it stays where it was.
Once per account: the mounts
Three pages describe things with no second copy because one is all you get. The Spectral Charger is the free one, unlocked by Ghastly Reins that our page farms at the Gathering Legion event at Kor Dragan in the Fractured Peaks. The Temptation mount is edition-bound and comes with the Hellborn Carapace armor, a pre-order cosmetic. All three carry over to every character on the account, as does the base mount itself, which is the theme our Diablo 4 hub is built around.
Frequently asked questions
Do Codex aspects carry over to a new character?
Yes. Both our Codex pages and the alt-sharing page say the Codex is account-wide, so a dungeon cleared on one character unlocks the aspect for all of them.
Why extract an aspect I already have in the Codex?
Because the extracted copy rolls higher. The trade is that it imprints once, while the Codex version imprints as often as you can pay the Occultist.
Which materials are Helltide-only?
Forgotten Souls and Fiend Rose on our pages, and Aberrant Cinders, the currency that opens Helltide chests, is earned nowhere else either.
