Every vendor in Diablo 4 takes something from you, and the useful question is whether you can get it back. Our vendor overview lists eleven kinds of merchant, and three of them have pages of their own here: the Blacksmith, the Occultist and the Purveyor of Curiosities, whose eight stalls are mapped on a separate locations page. This guide lines every service up by what leaves the counter for good.

Read the table from the top down. The first rows cost gold and nothing else, the middle rows spend something you farmed, and the last rows destroy an item you brought in. The same vendor can appear in more than one band: the Blacksmith repairs for gold and salvages for keeps, and the Occultist imprints without loss but extracts by wrecking the host item.

Nothing leaves but gold

The weapon, armor and jewellery merchants are the plainest shops in Sanctuary. The vendor overview notes that none of them shows a full range at once, that a screen beside each stall counts down to the next stock and that the Rings and Amulets seller refreshes every 60 minutes. Stable Vendors join this group once the campaign is over and upgrade the mount you earned from Donan's Favor.

The Blacksmith's repair service belongs here too. Our durability page puts the loss at ten points per death, and the Blacksmith charges by how much is missing and how rare the piece is, so a legendary at half health is the expensive case. The Jeweler's unsocketing works the same way: pay gold, get the gem back whole, as our socketing guide lays out.

Imprinting is the Occultist service that costs nothing you cannot replace. Any aspect in your Codex of Power can be stamped onto gear for gold and Veiled Crystals, with the price rising with the aspect's rarity and the slot, and the Codex copy stays where it was. Enchanting sits at the edge of this band: the item survives, but the affix you overwrite does not, and our affix guide is the place to check what you are giving up before you spend the Veiled Crystal and, on a legendary, the Fiend Rose.

Something you farmed is spent

Upgrading at the Blacksmith burns materials in a fixed ladder that the Blacksmith page tabulates: Iron Chunks and Rawhide at tier one, Silver Ore and Superior Leather at tier two, Veiled Crystals at tier three, and at tier four Coiling Wards for armor, Abstruse Sigils for jewellery and Baleful Fragments for weapons. Common gear takes one upgrade, magic two, rare three and legendary four or more, and each step costs more than the last. Salvaging an upgraded piece later returns some of what went in.

The Jeweler turns three gems into one of the next tier and asks for a Scattered Prism to cut a new socket. The Alchemist takes herbs: our potion guide lists Gallowvine among the ingredients for each potion tier, and the elixir recipes spend more of the same plants for a buff that runs out on a timer.

The Purveyor of Curiosities is the pure gamble. You pay Murmuring Obols for an unidentified piece, and our page's price list runs from 25 for boots or gloves through 40 for a cap, pants, ring, focus or tunic, 50 for a wand, 60 for an amulet and 75 for a staff. The writer's own estimate is a legendary less than one time in ten, which they call generous next to Diablo 3. The same stall sells Whispering Keys for the chained Silent Chests in the open world, a second gamble our page rates far lower. Two PvP merchants take Red Dust instead: Unsavory Oddities sells unrevealed legendary sets, and Odds and Ends sells the Killer's Set transmog piece by piece or, for 390,000 Red Dust, all at once.

The item goes into the fire

Salvaging is the Blacksmith service that cannot be undone. The item becomes crafting materials whose kind depends on its rarity and whether it was a weapon, armor or jewellery, and the only thing that survives is its appearance, which lands in your wardrobe for transmog. Marking gear as junk and salvaging it all at once is the shortcut our page recommends.

Extraction at the Occultist is the same trade with a bigger prize. A legendary goes in, a single aspect comes out as a crafting item, and the item is gone. Our Occultist page is careful about the limit: an extracted aspect is not added to the Codex of Power, it can be imprinted once, and after that it cannot be pulled back out. That is why our aspect list separates dungeon aspects, which the Codex remembers forever, from drop-only aspects, which live and die with one item. The Occultist also grinds lower-tier Nightmare Sigils into Sigil Powder for crafting the tier you actually want.

When each vendor appears, and where

Kyovashad holds nearly the whole set, but the shops open on a schedule. The Blacksmith appears on the map at level 10, after a short quest in the Fractured Peaks introduces you to one. The Jeweler needs level 20 and a Priority Quest. The Occultist unlocks at level 20 or the moment you finish your first dungeon, whichever comes first, and the first one, Demyan, keeps a wooden cabin in the northeast of Kyovashad. Lizveth, the first Purveyor, trades in the town's southeast corner past the healer, and Stable Vendors only take gold once the campaign is done.

Beyond the capital, the Purveyor locations page places a gambler in every region: Yelesna and Kyovashad in the Fractured Peaks, Ked Bardu and Jirandai in the Dry Steppes, Cerrigar in Scosglen, Gea Kul in Kehjistan, and Zarbinzet and Backwater in Hawezar. The vendor overview's own map splits the rest of Sanctuary into eight vendor areas, and the two PvP camps in the Fields of Hatred are the only places the Red Dust merchants set up. How each currency is earned is on the currencies page, and the wider crafting overview explains why nothing in this game is crafted from your inventory screen.

Frequently asked questions

Does extracting an aspect add it to the Codex of Power?

No. Our Occultist page says an extracted aspect is a crafting item that can be imprinted once and never returns to the Codex. Only aspects earned by clearing their dungeon are stored there permanently, and the items guide sorts the whole collection by that difference.

Is salvaging ever the wrong choice?

Only when the item carries a drop-only aspect you want to keep, because salvaging destroys the item and extraction is the one way to save the aspect. For everything else the Blacksmith hands back materials and keeps the look in your wardrobe, which is how new transmog options are unlocked.

How many Purveyors of Curiosities are there?

Eight, spread across all five regions, and our locations page walks to each one from its nearest waypoint. All of them sell the same thing, unidentified gear and Whispering Keys, for the same Obol prices.
