Bosses

Diablo 4 has bosses you can fight whenever you like, bosses that appear on a clock, bosses that live behind a dozen dungeon doors and bosses you meet exactly once. Our 62 boss pages cover all four kinds, and how often the game offers the fight turns out to be the most useful thing to know about it, because it decides whether a boss is a farm, an appointment or a memory. So this guide runs in that order, from the fights you can repeat at will down to the ones the campaign spends.

One census sits behind the middle of the list. Our dungeon table names the final boss of all 115 Codex dungeons, and 32 of them have none. The remaining 83 doors are shared by a small cast: the Tomb Lord alone guards 13 of them, and eleven bosses between them account for more than sixty. A dungeon boss is not a location so much as a recurring employee.

Whenever you want

Two bosses have no schedule at all. Gaspar Stilbian is a level 35 unique elite standing near the Highland Wilds in Scosglen, neutral until attacked, and our page treats him as a farm: kill him, leave, come back, and he drops Crushed Beast Bones and loot every time. The Butcher is the opposite kind of unscheduled: he appears at random inside dungeons, cannot be sought out, and drops his Cleaver, a unique axe our unique axes page lists for every class. Attack from behind and heal often, the page says, because he does not wait for you to be ready.

Every six hours: the world bosses

Three bosses run on a timer. Our world boss page says one of them spawns roughly six hours after the last one died, in one of five arenas, and neither the boss nor the arena is announced in advance; the in-game notice gives about 30 minutes' warning. The arenas are one per region: The Crucible in the Fractured Peaks, Caen Adar in Scosglen, Saraan Caldera in the Dry Steppes, Seared Basin in Kehjistan and the Fields of Desecration in Hawezar. All three drop Scattered Prisms, the material that adds sockets, and Ashava only begins spawning once the campaign is done.

World bossWhat to dodge, per our pageNotes
Ashava the PestilentDouble swipe, charge, poison poolsThe first world boss most players meet; her page maps all five arenas
Avarice the Gold CursedChest swing, mallet slam and thrust, portal charge, cleave, gold vomit, pillarsGolden lightning marks his arena when he is due
Wandering DeathDeath Pound, Shout, Tornadoes, Crater, Grasp and BeamLegendary loot and prisms

If the icon never appears, our world boss not spawning fix walks through the timer, the region and daylight settings and the usual connection checks.

Behind dungeon doors, as often as you clear them

Eighteen of our boss pages are dungeon bosses, and a dungeon can be run again and again, so these are the fights you will see most. The table counts how many of the 115 dungeons in our master list each boss guards. Where a boss page names fewer dungeons than the table does, both figures are given, because the pages were written before the table was.

The gap between the two columns is itself information. Our Khazra Abomination page lists four dungeons and the table finds eight, Resurrected Malice's page names two of its eight, and the Knight Council page names Kor Valar Ramparts, a dungeon the table credits to nobody. Where a dungeon boss is also a quest boss, as Mother's Judgement is in the Whispers from the Past story quest at Yshari Sanctum, the dungeon copies are the ones you can go back to. Which Codex aspect each of those dungeons pays is in the dungeons guide.

Once per character: the stronghold bosses

Fifteen bosses end the fifteen strongholds, and because a stronghold is cleared once and becomes a town, each of these fights happens once for each character you make. The locations guide has the levels and rewards; this table is about the fight.

Once, when the story says so

Twenty-one of our boss pages are story or quest fights, met at a fixed point and not again on that character. Reading them in act order is the closest thing our pages have to a campaign spine.

Two of the pages above double as dungeon bosses and are counted there: Mother's Judgement, and Elias, whose third appearance is the boss of the Fallen Temple. Lilith is the only story boss with a named unique drop on our pages, the Mother's Embrace ring, and Lilith's Lament is the only one with a guaranteed legendary.

The capstones: once per World Tier

Three fights sit outside every category above because they are gates. The High Council, four knights of whom the Sacred Physician dies first, and The Curator hold the Cathedral of Light at level 50, and beating the Curator is what unlocks World Tier 3 and, with it, unique items. Elias at the Fallen Temple does the same for World Tier 4 at 70. And the Echo of Hatred is the level 100 rematch with Lilith that pays the Blood Mount, the hardest single fight our pages describe. Our capstone guide notes that most players run each of the first two exactly once per character.

Frequently asked questions

How often do world bosses spawn in Diablo 4?

About every six hours, one boss in one of five arenas, per our world boss page, with roughly half an hour's notice on the map. Which of Ashava, Avarice or the Wandering Death appears, and where, is random.

Which boss appears in the most dungeons?

The Tomb Lord, at the end of 13 of the 115 dungeons in our master table. Scourge of the Land, Resurrected Malice and the Khazra Abomination follow with eight each.

Can a stronghold boss be fought again?

Not on the same character. Clearing a stronghold turns it into a town for that character, so the boss is gone until you make a new one. The Renown it paid, our hub notes, carries over anyway.
