Quests
Red Dead Redemption 2 tells Arthur Morgan's story in six chapters, each tied to a camp, and then hands the epilogue to John. Almost everything else in the game, from a $5 treasure map to a duel with a legendary gunslinger, is a strand that a particular chapter switches on and, in many cases, a later chapter switches off. This guide arranges the folder's 28 mission pages on that timeline: the story chapters first, then every side strand by the chapter that opens it, and finally the list of things that stop being possible once the last chapter ends. Read it before starting Our Best Selves, because that mission is a door that only opens one way.
The six chapters and what each one unlocks
| Chapter | Camp | Story missions on our page | What it switches on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Colter | Outlaws from the West, Enter Pursued by a Memory, Old Friends, The Aftermath of Genesis, Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?, Eastward Bound | Combat, horses, stealth and the first gunsmith stock; the map stays shut |
| 2 | Horseshoe Overlook | Americans at Rest through A Strange Kindness, sixteen in all | The open world, the camp ledger, fences, fishing, the grill, bounty boards, treasure maps and the first stranger strands |
| 3 | Clemens Point | The New South through The Battle of Shady Belle, sixteen | High Stakes treasure, coach robbery tips, the horse fence, the $1,500 bounty cap and the Lemoyne strands |
| 4 | Shady Belle | The Joys of Civilization through Banking, the Old American Art, with Help a Brother Out folded in | Saint Denis: the exotics, the mayor, the twins, the convicts, the inventor and the gunslinger finale |
| 5 | Guarma, then Lakay | Welcome to the New World through That's Murfree Country, eight | Butcher Creek's curse, Willard's Rest, and on its last mission the bullgator and the Mauser |
| 6 | Beaver Hollow | A Fork in the Road through Red Dead Redemption, twenty-two including the optional honor missions | The Veteran, the last debts, the Litchfield and Repeating Shotgun, the Carcano, and the final choice |
Two details of the chapter pages are worth knowing in advance. Every story mission carries two to five gold medal goals, and they follow a pattern: an accuracy floor between 70 and 90 percent, a headshot count, a timer, and no health items. The chapter pages list each set, and the missions within a chapter can be played in any order, so you can leave a hard medal for a day when your Dead Eye is fuller. The other detail is that some missions vanish: the oil wagon half of Pouring Forth Oil is dropped when no other story mission is available, or once it has sat untouched for four in-game hours.
Side strands by the chapter that opens them
Opened in Chapter 2
| Strand | Who starts it, where | What it pays |
|---|---|---|
| The Noblest of Men, and a Woman | Theodore Levin in Keane's Saloon, Valentine, with four photographs and a camera | A revolver from each of three duels, $350 by post at the end |
| All That Glitters | Maximo Cristobal Valdespino on the cliffs west of Flatneck Station, selling the first Jack Hall Gang map | Two gold bars on the island in O'Creagh's Run |
| Money Lending and Other Sins | Leopold Strauss at camp, parts I and II in Chapter 2, IV and V in Chapters 3 and 4, VI and VII in Chapter 6 | Nine debts, the camp ledger, and Chick Matthews's treasure map |
| Bounty hunting | Good, Honest, Snake Oil, then any sheriff's board | Cash per target, more for alive; fourteen targets are walked through |
| Robberies | Chez Porter with Javier after The First Shall Be Last; every other homestead from Chapter 2 | Stashes, weapon cases and the parts for two talismans |
| Hunting requests | Any poster at the stations and post offices of Valentine, Rhodes, Strawberry, Saint Denis, Van Horn or Armadillo | $50, $70, $100, $120 and $150 for five sets of perfect carcasses, and a letter from Ms. Hobbs |
| A Fine Night for It | Old Cajun on the road near Lagras, 10 pm to 5 am, after one Night Folk encounter | Two waves of machete men and a reward for clearing his house |
| American Dreams | Three murder scenes near Valentine, Wallace Station and Braithwaite Manor, each hiding a map piece in a head | Edmund Lowry hogtied and delivered to the Valentine sheriff, and $20 if you shoot him before the sheriff does when he lunges |
| Stranger Statues | A painting at Window Rock and a cave east of Donner Falls; no mission needed | Three gold bars, $1,500 at a fence |
The gunslingers page walks each duel in the Levin strand: Billy Midnight on the train out of Rhodes, Black Belle's siege in Bluewater Marsh, Emmet Granger's hog pen, and Flaco Hernandez's cabin at Cairn Lake, where threatening the guards saves the bullets. The photographs unlock the final act only after A Fine Night of Debauchery in Chapter 4, when Slim Grant is cut loose near Annesburg and Calloway shoots him in the back. Bounty hunting has an unusual unlock: Good, Honest, Snake Oil is offered from the start of Chapter 2 until Chapter 5 ends, and the posters at the Saint Denis, Valentine, Strawberry, Rhodes, Blackwater and Tumbleweed offices then open in stages, with Mark Johnson and Robbie Laidlaw after The Joys of Civilization, and Anthony Foreman, Otis Skinner, Elias Green, Joaquin Arroyo and Esteban Cortez only after Gainful Employment in the epilogue. Foreman's poster never appears if you killed him in No, No and Thrice, No.
Opened in Chapter 3
| Strand | Who starts it, where | What it pays |
|---|---|---|
| The Iniquities of History | Jeremiah Compson on a bench outside Rhodes station | His pocket watch, pistol and ledger, and the choice to kill him for high honor |
| He's British, of Course | Margaret at the circus wreck west of Bluewater Marsh | A painted donkey, a dog in a mane, a striped cougar, then a real lion whose paw is worth $19.75 and an emerald worth $250 |
| Coach robbery tips | Hector at the Strawberry post office and Alden at the Rhodes one, after Friends in Very Low Places | Six coaches: Fort Riggs ($110), Appleseed Timber, Owanjila's armored bank coach, two Scarlett Meadows runs and the convoy at the Hill Haven railway bridge |
Opened in Chapter 4
| Strand | Gate | Who starts it, where | What it pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Help a Brother Out | The Joys of Civilization | Brother Dorkins collecting donations in eastern Saint Denis | Two freed captives behind a bookcase, then Sister Calderon's crucifix an hour later |
| The Ties That Bind Us | The Joys of Civilization | Mr. White and Mr. Black brawling on a hill by the Rhodes tracks | $80 for arresting them, or a treehouse in Big Valley if you burn five posters and nurse them back |
| A Bright Bouncing Boy | The Joys of Civilization | Marko Dragic by the pond in the Saint Denis park | The Electric Lantern, the Artificial Intelligence trophy, and a robot brooding on a mountain west of Colter |
| Duchesses and Other Animals | The Gilded Cage | Algernon Wasp in a greenhouse north of Saint Denis | $110 to $200 for each of five lists of plumes, orchids and gator eggs, then the Exotic Hat and Algernon's Revolver |
| Idealism and Pragmatism for Beginners | The Gilded Cage | A letter from Mayor Lemieux, collected at any post office, then his mansion at night | Bullying a professor and a philanthropist; kill Jean-Marc for 10% off in every Saint Denis shop, spare him and the mayor resigns |
| Oh Brother | The Gilded Cage | Twins Proetus and Acrisius outside the Valentine general store | Bottles shot off heads, a beating each, and two barrels over Cumberland Falls |
Duchesses and Other Animals is the strand most people abandon, because its five lists total 150-odd plumes, eggs and orchids. The exotics page is the companion piece: it maps every orchid by color, notes which ones grow on tree trunks rather than the ground, and explains that a spawn point yields one orchid per stage, so camping and returning is part of the loop. Plumes come from egrets, herons and spoonbills in the Bayou; the gator eggs sit in nests the alligators guard.
Opened in Chapters 5 and 6
| Strand | Gate | Who starts it, where | What it pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Wisdom of the Elders | Fleeting Joy, Chapter 5 | Lemuel collapsed under the tracks west of Van Horn, then Obediah Hinton at Butcher Creek | Thirteen cursed talismans found with Eagle Eye, a poisoned mine, and $50 plus the company's contract |
| The Widow of Willard's Rest | Chapters 5 and 6 | Charlotte Balfour north of Annesburg, where the river meets the map edge | A rabbit hunt, a shooting lesson, a night's sleep, and $125 plus the run of her house |
| The Veteran | Chapter 6 | Hamish Sinclair at Veteran's Homestead on O'Creagh's Run | His runaway horse, the Tyrant fish, an alpha wolf, a boar, and Buell as his dying wish |
Chapter 6 also carries a run of optional honor missions that the chapter page flags one by one. Do Not Seek Absolution needs honor rank 4 or better before Edith Downes appears at the Annesburg mine. Of Men and Angels is four food items or $10 for Sister Calderon. The Course of True Love IV and V put Penelope and Beau on a train to Riggs Station. Money Lending VI and VII bring the last two debtors, John Weathers at Moonstone Pond, where absolving pays 10 honor, and Arthur Londonderry's widow at Butcher Creek, where giving money pays 20. Archeology for Beginners only exists if you agree to help Rains Fall in The Bridge to Nowhere, and finishing it without a kill earns the Owl Feather Trinket; saying yes to Monroe on that ride is what unlocks Honor, Amongst Thieves. Mrs. Sadie Adler, Widow ends the moment you tell her no.
What closes at Chapter 6
- Loansharking. Every debtor on Strauss's list disappears when Chapter 6 ends, so Weathers and Londonderry have to be visited before Our Best Selves.
- The gang's errands. Camp requests for the pipe, pen, pocket watch, harmonica and Hosea's book run out at the end of Chapter 4, and Pearson's compass at the end of Chapter 2; the items guide has each hiding place.
- Arthur's stranger content. The Veteran, the Widow of Willard's Rest and the Chapter 6 honor missions are Arthur's alone, and the chapter page's warning is plain: once Our Best Selves begins, the game runs straight through to the credits.
- Cores. After A Fork in the Road every core drains faster, which makes the timed and no-health-item medals in the last chapter harder than they look.
- The final choice. Red Dead Redemption, the last mission, forks between going back to the cave for the money and helping John up the cliffs, and the fistfight with Micah that follows plays out according to that choice and your honor. The four outcomes are in the game systems guide.
What survives into the epilogue is the New Austin content: the Tumbleweed and Blackwater bounties, the Del Lobo hideouts counted in the locations guide, Micah's revolver on Mount Hagen from the weapons guide, and the special characters and legendary animals of the desert that the characters guide files under Epilogue 1.
Choices that change what exists
| Mission | Choice | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| No, No and Thrice, No (Chapter 4) | Spare or kill Anthony Foreman | Spared, he becomes an epilogue bounty in Doyle's Tavern |
| The Bridge to Nowhere (Chapter 6) | Help Rains Fall or refuse | Refusing removes Archeology for Beginners and Honor, Amongst Thieves |
| Archeology for Beginners | Recover the sacred items with or without killing | No kills earns the trinket that slows all three cores by 15% |
| Idealism and Pragmatism | Kill or spare Jean-Marc | A discount in Saint Denis, or the mayor's resignation |
| The Ties That Bind Us | Arrest the convicts or burn their posters | $80 now, or a treehouse in Big Valley later |
| The Iniquities of History | Kill Compson or walk away | Killing him is the honorable ending here |
| Sean, Bill, Micah and Lenny's coach jobs | Do them in their chapter or not at all | All four companion robberies are time-sensitive |
| Red Dead Redemption (Chapter 6) | Money or John | Which of the four endings you see |
Mission questions
Where do bounty targets come from?
From the boards in sheriff and police offices, once Good, Honest, Snake Oil has been played. Reading a poster marks a region; the target is somewhere inside it, usually in a camp or a fortified building, and several must be brought in alive or the job fails.
Which strands can I miss for good?
Loansharking, the companion errands, the four companion coach robberies, Chez Porter and Lonnie's Shack among the homesteads, and every Arthur-only stranger in Chapters 5 and 6. Treasure hunts, hunting requests, the exotics and the Saint Denis strands all wait for the epilogue.
Do stranger missions count toward 100 percent?
Only the story missions are compulsory. The strands pay in trophies of their own instead: Help a Brother Out is one of the honor missions behind Lending a Hand, A Bright Bouncing Boy ends with Artificial Intelligence, and the camp errands add up to Errand Boy. Every one of them is indexed with the rest of the game on the Red Dead Redemption 2 hub.
