Five bonds outside your party, five different start dates, and one shared pool of free afternoons. Marie does not exist until 18 April and is gone after 22 December. Ayane is decided in April by a club choice you make before you know what it costs. Nanako only takes the evening slot, and only when Dojima is out. Fox and Margaret do not want your afternoons at all, they want your legwork and your fusion list.
So the ordering here follows the calendar instead of the cast: when each link opens, what slot it occupies, what stalls it in the middle, and which of the five you can actually lose. It is a scheduling guide that happens to be about people.
The Inaba bonding calendar
| Link | Opens | How it opens | When you can meet | The gate that stalls it | Missable? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marie, Aeon | 4/18 | In the Velvet Room, via Check on Dwellers and then her request | Wednesdays, weekends and holidays | Rank 4 to 5 will not fire until 7/24 whatever you do | Yes. Rank 10 by 22 December or nothing |
| Ayane, Sun | From 4/25 | Pick the music band over the drama club when you join a cultural club | Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, in the school practice building | None stated, though a social stat around level 4 smooths it | Yes, and permanently. The club choice is one-way |
| Nanako, Justice | 5/3 | Automatic. She is at the Dojima Residence | Evenings, and only when Dojima is out | Expression 3 before rank 4, and rank-ups are blocked until the current dungeon is cleared | No |
| Fox, Hermit | 5/5 | Automatic on sight at the shrine in the North Shopping District | Whenever you have finished the current Ema tag quest | The quests themselves, which send you across Inaba | No |
| Margaret, Empress | From 5/19 | Velvet Room, with Knowledge Level 3 first | Any time you can reach the Velvet Room | Party level, rising from 17 all the way to the high sixties | Effectively yes. A low-level run strands on the last request |
April: the club choice you make before it matters
The Sun arcana belongs to whichever cultural club you join, and there are two: the music band, which gives you Ayane, and the drama club, which gives you Yumi. You pick one, and the other is closed for that entire playthrough. Ayane plays trombone in the school's Symphonic band and is short on confidence rather than short on ability, and helping her past that is the shape of the whole link.
This is the only genuinely irreversible decision in this bucket. Every other link on this page can be started late and finished in a rush. This one cannot be revisited at all. Our school clubs guide covers what both clubs are like before you commit.
Marie opens in the same month and is the only link in the game that you have to go and ask for. Nothing prompts you. Go to the Velvet Room any time from 18 April, pick Check on Dwellers and then Listen to Marie's Request, and she turns up outside. A failure to trigger is a known bug and not a missing requirement, so leave and come back in.
3 to 19 May: three links open in seventeen days
This looks like a bottleneck and is not, because all three take different currencies.
Nanako opens on 3 May and takes the evening slot at home, which nothing else competes for. Fox opens on 5 May at the shrine and takes legwork rather than time slots, because it ranks up by completing the wishes written on the Ema tags. Margaret opens from 19 May in the Velvet Room and takes fusion homework and party levels, which you were doing anyway.
So the honest advice, which a ranked list of characters cannot give you, is that two of these three are effectively free. Fox and Margaret are powered by dungeon crawling rather than competing with it.
What each bond costs you
| Link | You pay in | The exact price | Does it compete with dungeons? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marie | Free afternoons | Correct dialogue with an Aeon Persona equipped for bonus points, on Wednesdays, weekends and holidays | Directly. Those are the days you would otherwise be in the TV |
| Ayane | Free afternoons | Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, with a matching Sun Persona for bonus points | Yes |
| Nanako | Social stats | Expression 3 before rank 4, and the current dungeon has to be cleared | No. Evenings are a separate slot |
| Fox | Legwork | Ema tag quests across Inaba, including fishing and bug catching for some of them | Partly, and it pays for itself in SP |
| Margaret | Fusion homework | Specific Personas with specific skills, starting at party level 17 | No. It runs on dungeon crawling instead of against it |
The two that can actually be missed are the two you pay for with afternoons, which is not a coincidence. Our Expression, Understanding and social stats pages cover raising the stats that gate the others.
The evening slot problem
Nanako is the most common reason a player thinks a Social Link is bugged, because three separate conditions have to line up and the game explains none of them.
She is only available in the evening. Dojima has to be out of the house. And you cannot advance her at all until you have cleared whatever story dungeon is currently open. Miss any one of those and she is simply not an option that night, with no message telling you why.
Beyond that she is the easiest link in the game, since you do not have to travel anywhere to find her, and her rank gates are Expression rather than Courage or Knowledge. She is also the only route to Sraosha through fusion.
What each bond pays back
| Link | Max-rank reward | What it is actually for |
|---|---|---|
| Marie | The Hollow Forest dungeon and her ending | The entire reason Golden owners start her. There is no other way in |
| Ayane | Handmade Ticket | Fuses Asura, a level 86 Persona costing over 76,000 yen, which resists fire and ice and brings light skills |
| Nanako | Family Photo | Fuses Sraosha, and this is the only route to it |
| Fox | No item. A permanent discount | Healing in dungeons drops from 60 yen per SP to 15, and Fox appears inside dungeons for you. The best money-per-hour bond in the game |
| Margaret | Spiral Brooch | Fuses Isis, after the last and highest-level fusion request |
The Fox row is the one nobody frames correctly. It is not a Persona unlock, it is a running cost cut by three quarters for the rest of the game, in the exact place where your money goes. If you are choosing one optional link to actually finish, that is the argument for this one.
Margaret's list is a genuine progression check rather than a conversation. She wants specific Personas carrying specific skills, and the requirements climb with your party level, so a run that stays under-levelled simply cannot deliver the last few. Our fusion guide covers the mechanics and the Margaret page has a solution for every request.
The two that fork into romance
Marie and Ayane both branch at rank 9, and neither branch is signposted before you answer.
With Marie, the committing line is a response to "...Why?". Answering "Because I love you." takes the romance path. Answering "Because you're my friend." takes friendship and ends that conversation immediately with no further options. A later prompt about not believing words repeats the fork: hugging her is romance, not hugging is friendship. Rank 9 to 10 then plays a different scene depending on which you took.
Ayane forks at the same rank, and the difference there is structural: the platonic rank 9 has no dialogue at all while the romance branch does. The reward is identical either way, so the choice is about the story rather than about the payoff. Our romance options guide covers the wider dating picture, including which relationships collide.
One fight lives in this section
The earliest bond in the game is settled with a fight rather than a conversation, which is why Shadow Yosuke sits here. It triggers inside the Former Konishi Liquors on the Midnight Channel, and you fight it alone, because nobody else has a Persona yet.
Wind hurts Izanagi badly, so guarding Wind of Oblivion matters more than damage does. Zio is the affinity answer, its knockdown buys you one extra turn, and Cleave is what you spend that turn on while keeping your SP alive. Guard when it charges. Afterwards, the line about still being yourself is what awakens Jiraiya and gives you a second party member. Our Konishi Liquor Store guide covers the dungeon around it.
The two questions people ask most
Do I still have time to finish Marie? Work backwards from 22 December using her Wednesday, weekend and holiday slots, and remember that rank 5 will not unlock before 7/24 no matter how many of those days you spend. If you are past mid-November and still in single digits, the answer is probably no.
Can I still get Ayane? Not if you joined the drama club. That is the one decision on this page with no recovery, and it costs a full playthrough.
