Items

Every item in this game sits somewhere on a scale of recoverability, from things that exist on exactly one calendar day and are then gone forever, to things that are in stock all year where yen is the only obstacle. This page is ordered by how easily you lose an item rather than by which shop sells it.

One rule runs underneath all five tiers: the scarce currency in Persona 4 Golden is an evening, not yen. That is why Tier 4 exists at all, and why the single best purchase in the game is a book about reading faster.

Tier 1: gone if you miss the day

Six items appear on one date each. Miss the date and there is no shop, no quest and no second chance in that playthrough.

DateItemWhat it needs from you
25 JuneKung Fu CostumePet the fox in the Midnight Channel. Free
21 AugustThe Divine WayAttend the summer festival
30 OctoberHalloween CostumeNothing. It is given to you. Free
ChristmasSilver BangleA present from Rise, and it only arrives if you are in a relationship with her. Raises max SP by 50 percent
ChristmasYasogami Girl UniformNaoto as your lover, her Social Link at rank 10, and you have to stay with her
20 MarchKingpin DusterPet the fox in the Midnight Channel. Free

Look at the two Christmas rows and the real deadline becomes clear. Neither is decided in December. Both depend on a Social Link state you have to have built over weeks, and by the time the date arrives the outcome was settled long ago. If either matters to you, the work happens in autumn. Our romance options guide covers which relationships are available.

Tier 2: locked behind a rank on one specific date

Three books, and between them they are the reason most read-everything runs fail. Each has a conditional attached, and each is available on exactly one day.

Witch Detective, 29 May. It needs Strength Social Link rank 1 to 3, which means going too fast is as bad as going too slow, and you must already have rescued Kanji.

Poly-land, 15 July. Be in your room and take Kou's call inviting you to a study date, then answer that you are allergic to Algebra. It needs Strength rank 4, or rank 7 or higher if you joined basketball.

The O-Cha Way, 10 August. Basketball players can take it at any Strength rank except 6, which is a genuinely strange exclusion and easy to land on by accident. Soccer players can take it at any rank at all.

One disambiguation that no page seems to make and that causes real confusion: Strength here means the Strength Social Link with Kou or Daisuke from the sports clubs, not a combat stat. The combat Strength stat is what the Portrait Medal raises, and the two have nothing to do with each other. Our school clubs guide covers which club you joined and what it costs you.

Tier 3: earned by performance, with no deadline and no shortcut

These cannot be missed by a date, only by not being good enough yet, which makes them the most forgiving tier and the slowest.

ItemHow you earn itWhat it does
Portrait MedalTop score in the May mid-terms. Nanako hands it overStrength +5
Paper ArmbandTop score in the July finalsAll stats +5
Bead RingTop score in the October mid-termsEvasion against magic

Reader KingRead every book in one playthroughMagic +10
Omnipotence OrbCollect every legendary weapon and armour, then beat The Reaper againBlocks all elemental damage except Almighty

The exam rewards are worth calling out because they are the reason to bother with studying at all beyond the story. Three top scores across the year hand you a stat accessory each time, and the July one raises everything by 5. Our midterm exams and final exam guides have the answers, and classroom answers covers the day-to-day questions that raise Knowledge on the way there.

Reader King is the item that makes Tiers 1 and 2 matter. Reading every book in a single playthrough means catching all three rank-locked books on their exact dates and The Divine Way at the summer festival, so if you want it, the missable calendar above is your checklist rather than a curiosity.

Tier 4: the item is free, the evening is not

This is the tier the whole page is built around. Books and boxed lunches cost nothing to acquire and everything to use, because both consume the same evening slot, and there are only so many evenings between April and March.

You read on the sofa near the coffee table in your room, and at the start you get through exactly one chapter per sitting. A book is not finished, and its stat boost does not apply, until every chapter is done.

Which is why Hyperspeed Reading is the best purchase in the game. It is available in August, takes four days to get through, and from then on you read at twice the speed for the rest of the year. Buy it the day it appears. Four evenings spent in August buys back far more than four evenings across the remaining seven months, and there are roughly thirty books still on the shelf at that point.

Stack it with the other multiplier: reading on a rainy day doubles the stat increase. The practical habit is to hold a part-finished book back rather than closing it out on a clear evening, and finish it when the weather turns. Our books guide lists every book, its availability date and which stat it raises.

Boxed lunches compete for the same slot and pay in a different currency. They only become available once Nanako has been to the market and filled the fridge, which she does a couple of times a month and does not always announce, so check it yourself. Stand at the fridge and choose "Spend the evening making lunch". The payoff is more time to socialise at school the next day, which makes lunches an investment in Social Links rather than in stats. Five of them unlock the Cooking with Gas trophy.

Each meal has its own preparation method, and getting it right is what makes a lunch worth the evening. Wrap it tightly for Broiled Fish, mix and cool simultaneously for California Rolls, add soy sauce and mirin for Carrot and Burdock Root Kinpira. Our boxed lunch guide has the perfect method for all of them.

Tier 5: yen is the only gate

The bottom tier is genuinely safe. Nothing here is missable, nothing is timed, and everything is a question of money.

Accessories come from side quests, or from the Central Shopping District at Daidara Metalworks, where the stock expands as you sell it the materials you win in battle, so selling is what unlocks buying. Only one accessory can be equipped per character at a time, which means the stat accessories from Tier 3 are competing with each other rather than stacking.

Clothes are mostly from Croco Fur and they are purely cosmetic, changing how a character looks in the field and in battle. They are also the most expensive things in the game by a distance: the Agent Set is 19,400, the Butler Clothing Set 39,600, the Festival Set 46,490, the Cheer Squad Set 59,800, the Neo Featherman Set 99,800, and the Maid Clothing Set 200,000. Our clothes and accessories guide lists them per character.

Consumables are the other half of this tier, and the ones that matter are the ones that undo something. Dokudami tea for ailments, Revival Beads for a downed party member, Soul Drops and the SP items that keep a long climb going. Our expendable items guide lists what each one restores, and our money farming guide covers paying for all of it.

A single-playthrough checklist

If you only remember four things from this page, make them these. Buy Hyperspeed Reading the moment it appears in August, because everything else in Tier 4 gets cheaper afterwards. Save your unfinished books for rainy evenings. Put 29 May, 15 July, 10 August and 21 August in your calendar, because those four days are the entire read-everything run. And decide who you are dating by autumn, because both Christmas items are settled well before Christmas.

Everything else on this page can be bought, earned or ground for later, which is precisely why it is at the bottom.
