Mechanics

Almost every system in this game is a converter. You put a slot of time in and something else comes out, and the systems differ only in what they pay and at what rate. The calendar is the real currency here, not yen, which is why the useful way to sort these is by what one afternoon actually buys.

Sorted that way, the ranking is not what most guides imply. The best rate in the game is not the one that pays the most of any single thing, it is the handful of activities that pay in three currencies from one slot.

The exchange rate

The best rate: systems that pay twice or more

A part-time job is the clearest example. You pick one off the bulletin board up in the North Shopping District, then catch the bus from the South Shopping District when the shift starts. One slot pays a fixed wage, raises the stat that job is built around, and several of them open a Social Link with the person you work for. The Assistant Day Care Caretaker pays 4,000 yen, raises Understanding, and starts Eri Minami's bond, all from the same afternoon.

There is one more advantage that almost nothing else has: taking an evening job away from the house lets you leave the Dojima Residence in the evening even when Ryotaro is home. That is a slot you otherwise cannot use at all. Our part-time jobs guide has the requirements, wages and schedules for all seven.

Clubs work the same way with one fewer currency. A sports club raises Diligence and opens the Strength link with Kou or Daisuke, and a cultural club raises Expression and opens the Sun link. Our school clubs guide covers both choices, and it is worth reading before you pick, because the cultural club decision cannot be undone.

And the library deserves its reputation. It is on the second floor of the classroom building, past your own classroom 2-2, and the shy blue-haired girl standing by the door is the landmark. Studying there raises Knowledge, but you can also invite a classmate for a study session, which adds Social Link points to the same slot.

Buying social stats

There are five social stats and they all max at rank 5, which you can check under Open Stats in the menu. Each one gates something: a conversation option, a job application, a Social Link rank, or a piece of the investigation itself.

StatWhat raises itNotes
KnowledgeStudying, answering questions in class, exam preparationThe easiest to max, because most of it happens on days you were spending anyway
CourageEating odd things out of the fridge, working at the hospital, a long scooter rideThe one people neglect, and it gates Chie's bond and half of Naoto's
UnderstandingWorking as an Origami Crane FolderNarrow, so start early if a bond needs it
DiligenceSport after school, folding envelopes at home, working at a barFolding envelopes at home does not use a travel slot
ExpressionTranslating, tutoring, and both cultural clubsNanako's bond gates on this one

Two purchases change these rates permanently. Expert Study Methods raises the Knowledge you gain from studying, and rain doubles what a study session pays, so a wet evening at the library with that book read is worth several dry ones. Our social stats guide covers all five, with dedicated pages for Understanding, Diligence and Expression.

The genuinely free stat income is school itself. Answering correctly in class costs you nothing because the day happens regardless, and exams pay accessories on top of the Knowledge. Our classroom answers, midterm and final exam guides have the answers. The Midnight Trivia Miracle Quiz is the same idea in the menu: 20 questions per round across three rounds, hosted by Teddieson against Chie, Yosuke and Yukiko, with the Finals gated behind the true ending path and a trophy at the end of it.

Buying yen

Money in this game is not really a bottleneck until it suddenly is, usually the first time you look at weapon upgrades or a 200,000 yen outfit. There are three routes and they behave differently.

Jobs are the stable one: a fixed amount for a fixed slot, with no variance and the stat and bond payouts stacked on top. Selling what you win in dungeons is the volume one, and it does double duty because selling materials to Daidara Metalworks is what expands the accessory stock you can then buy. And Golden Hands are the spike: rare shadows that flee on sight and pay heavily in both yen and experience.

Our money farming guide covers all three in detail.

Buying items

Three Inaba pastimes pay in objects rather than numbers, and each has a small setup cost before the first payout.

Fishing needs a rod, and there is no shop that sells one. Go to the Samegawa Flood Plain and trade the elderly man on the riverbank a fish hook for it. After that you need bait, and what you catch can be bartered for items and stones. Shichiri Beach holds three additional kinds of fish with special effects.

Gardening opens at the Dojima Residence after 22 May, when Nanako introduces it. Seedlings come from the woman at the front of the residence, the Junes Department Store or the TV Shopping Network, and the harvest pays materials.

Bug catching has the longest setup and the most circular reward. During the day, a boy at the shrine tells you he has lost his net. Return that night, which needs enough Courage to approach the shrine after dark, and a lady in white asks about a Red Goldfish before pointing at a net on the shrine roof. Take it back to the boy the next day and he teaches you to catch bugs. The achievement for it unlocks the best fishing bait in the game, which means the bug system exists partly to feed the fishing one.

The systems that cost no days at all

Everything above spends calendar. This section does not, which is why it is the part of the game you should be doing while you do everything else.

Fusion is the engine. You can hold six Personas at a time to start with, your party members cannot equip any of their own, and an individual Persona's usefulness is temporary by design: it is a resource to be spent on the next one rather than a permanent asset. Everything you build comes out of the Velvet Room and costs no afternoon.

The skills those Personas carry fall into four categories, and knowing which is which is what makes a fusion deliberate rather than hopeful.

CategoryWhat it coversCost
Magic skillsThe elemental tiers, from single-target up to severe and all-enemy versionsSP
Physical skillsStrikes, slashes and pierces, including the multi-hit onesA percentage of your HP
Support skillsBuffs, debuffs and ailment cures, including the Ma- versions that hit the whole party or the whole enemy sideSP
Auto skillsPassives that cannot be toggled and fire on their own depending on your stateNothing

Levelling is the other no-slot system. Grinding works, but the efficient version is hunting Golden Hands, which appear disguised as ordinary shadows, stand still, and flee the instant you are spotted. They do not change direction while fleeing, so they bounce off walls, and running into one starts the fight. They have no weakness and are immune to instant kills, so the reliable line is to raise the party's critical rate, land a critical with a physical skill, then all-out attack. Prioritising wands during Shuffle Time boosts the experience, which pairs with them well. Our levelling guide has the full method.

The setting that changes every rate

Golden has five difficulty levels rather than three, and on the Steam version you can change between them mid-playthrough rather than committing at the start.

DifficultyDamage takenDamage dealtExperienceMoneyRetries
Very EasyLowestHighestHighestHighestBattle and dungeon retries both allowed
EasyLowHighHighHighBattle retry only
NormalNormalNormalNormalNormalBattle retry only
HardHighLowLowLowBattle retry only
Very HardHighestLowestLowestLowestNeither

Notice that experience and money move with damage, which means difficulty is not only a combat setting. It changes how many dungeon runs you need to reach a level, and therefore how much calendar the dungeons take away from everything else on this page. New Game Plus goes further and lets you set each of those components individually. Our difficulty guide covers the change process and the custom options.

The bond system itself

Social Links are the system all of the above eventually feeds, and the one rule worth knowing here rather than on a character page is the matching Persona bonus: equip a Persona of the same arcana as the person you are with and every correct answer pays more.

Our social links guide covers every bond in the game with its start date and reward, and the Seekers of Truth link is the special case: it opens on 3 December when the team commits to investigating the Midnight Channel properly, and its choices feed directly into avoiding a bad ending. For who you can date and what that changes, see our romance options guide.

The scheduling side of all this, meaning which bond opens when and which ones you can lose, is covered in our party members guide and our social links overview.
