Mechanics
Persona 3 is two games sharing one calendar. In daylight you are a student with three stats, a class schedule and friends whose patience runs on a clock. During the Dark Hour you are a Persona user grinding a 264-floor tower. The two halves feed each other: bonds made in daylight make stronger Personas at night, and the daytime stats you neglect will lock you out of the bonds. This guide runs our eleven Persona 3 systems pages in that order, from the stats that gate everything to the fusion and farming that end the game.
The three social stats
Charm, Courage and Academics decide who will talk to you. They are not optional flavour: half the social links in the game refuse to start until the matching stat hits a rank, and one Velvet Room request needs two of them maxed. Every stat point comes from how you spend an afternoon or evening, so plan them alongside your social links rather than after.
Our social stats page covers all three. Academics grows fastest through study, two points in your room at night, up to four in the school library and as many as six studying on a Sunday, with the Paulownia Mall arcade quiz, the part-time job at De Blue V, sushi at Wakatsu and the Film Festival as alternatives. Courage is the quickest to max out at 80 points and comes from the jobs and conversations that ask you to be brave. Charm is the one school pays for directly.
Our Charm page has the fullest breakdown, and school is the most efficient source of all three. Exams pay Charm directly: above-average marks give +1, well above average +2, and finishing first in the class gives a full +4. A correct answer to a classroom or exam question adds another point.
| Activity | What it pays | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Chagall Cafe | +2 Charm, and the part-time job there on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday pays Charm and Courage | 500 yen |
| Hagakure Ramen | +3 Charm | 900 yen |
| Screen Shot Theater after school | +4 Charm | 1,500 yen |
| Summer Festival | Charm, and it helps social links along | Fixed dates only |
| Movies | Courage in even-numbered months, Charm in odd ones | Any day |
| Horror house at the game parade, Tuesday and Friday | Courage | Any week |
| Print Club at the game parade, Monday and Thursday | Charm | Any week |
| Wild Duck Burger | Courage | Any day |
Only the Summer Festival is date-limited; everything else can be repeated as often as your wallet allows, which makes money a social stat of its own.
Social links, arcana by arcana
A social link is a friendship that levels, and each one maxes at rank 10. Ranking one up makes the Personas of that Arcana far cheaper to fuse and unlocks an ultimate Persona at the top. Our social links guide covers all of them; several change character entirely depending on whether you picked the male or female protagonist.
| Arcana | Who | How it starts | When you can meet them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fool | The party | Unlocks 4/20 automatically | Story-linked, maxes at the end |

| Priestess | Fuuka Yamagishi | Courage 6, Fortune rank 1, and Fuuka joining SEES | School hallway, Monday, Friday, Saturday |

| Sun | Akinari Kamiki | Academics 4 and Hanged Man rank 4, then return the pen Koromaru has at the dorm at night | Sundays at the Shrine |
| Judgement | Nyx Annihilation Team | Begins 12/31, no requirement | No schedule |
| Aeon | Aigis | Speak to her in the 2-F classroom on 1/8 | Any day |
Nozomi is the fiddliest of the lot, because he wants a gourmet quiz passed before he will even start. Our Nozomi social link guide has the three answers and the best dialogue choice at every rank.
Clubs, and the links they open
Joining a club is the cheapest way into two social links, and our club membership guide lists what is available to whom. The male protagonist can join the Swimming, Kendo, Track, Art, Music or Science clubs; the female protagonist can join the Tennis, Volleyball, Library or School Health clubs. You cannot cross over.
The sports clubs open on April 23, when a notice goes up outside the school gymnasium: swimming, kendo or track for the male route, tennis or volleyball for the female one, and either way it starts the Chariot link with Kazushi or Rio. The cultural clubs come later. Art, science or music on June 17 begins the Fortune link with Keisuke Hiraga, while the library or health committee on May 8 begins the Hermit link with Saori.
Exams
Four exam blocks punctuate the year, in May, July, October and December, with classroom questions scattered between them. Answering correctly raises Charm, ranking high in the class raises it further, and Academics is the gate on both Mitsuru's and Akinari's social links. Our exam answers guide lists every question and its answer for each semester, including the classroom ones that come before each exam.
Gifts
On days off and during festivals, a friend with an established link may call and ask to spend the day together. At the end of the outing you can hand over an item, and the right item moves the link further than a plain conversation would. Every character has a loved list and a liked list, and our social link gifts guide has both for each of them.
A few patterns save you carrying a shop's worth of stock. Handmade and cute items, the Hand-knit Scarf, Knit Rabbit and Japanese Strap, are loved by most of the school crowd. The brand items, Brand Watch, Brand Purse and Brand Wallet, are what Mitsuru and Yuko want and almost nobody else. The Goggle-eyed Idol you fetch for a Velvet Room request doubles as a loved gift for Bebe and Chihiro.
Romance
Maxing certain social links opens a romance, and each one unlocks that Arcana's ultimate Persona. Our romance options guide covers both protagonists.
| Route | Who | What it takes | Persona |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male | Yukari Takeba | Charm maxed at 6; her link starts 24 July | Cybele |
| Male | Mitsuru Kirijo | Maxed academics and an aced exam; available from 21 November | Alilat |
| Male | Yuko Nishiwaki | Join a sports club and walk home with her twice | Siegfried |
| Male | Fuuka Yamagishi | Courage maxed; her link starts 15 June | Scathach |
| Male | Elizabeth | Accept and finish her Velvet Room requests | Kartikeya |
| Male | Aigis | Her route starts 8 January and does not always end in romance | Metatron |
| Male | Chihiro Fushimi | Answer three of her questions to start the link | Melchizedek |
| Female | Ryoji Mochizuki | Fortune Arcana from 9 November, and his window closes on New Year's Eve | Norn |
| Female | Akihiko Sanada | Courage 4 and the right answers in his dialogue | Helel |
| Female | Ken Amada | The female route's Justice link, same as Chihiro's | Melchizedek |
| Female | Theodore | Complete his requests, the mirror of Elizabeth's route | Kartikeya |
| Female | Bebe | Academics 2; he leaves the country rather than staying | Byakko and Yurlungur |
The Velvet Room: fusion
Fusion is how you keep pace with the tower. You start with six Persona slots and unlock another every ten levels up to twelve, and our fusion guide covers the whole system along with a chart of 90 recipes and their costs. Talk to Igor in the Velvet Room, combine two or three Personas early and up to six once the game opens up, and remember that anything you fuse is stored in the compendium and can be bought back cheaply, so experimenting costs almost nothing.
Skill inheritance is the part worth learning early, and the game teaches it with a request. Our Jack Frost with Dia guide walks it: catch or fuse Pixie and Unicorn, both available in the first block of Tartarus, level Pixie to 4 so it learns Dia, then fuse the pair and pick the Dia skill card during the fusion so Jack Frost inherits it. Elizabeth pays Battle Panties for it, and you come out understanding the mechanic that carries every later fusion.
For what to actually build toward, our best Personas guide covers Thanatos, Norn, Shiva, Helel, Messiah and Metatron with their recipes and standout skills, and our fusion weapons guide covers the other kind of fusion, the one that turns a Persona and a blank Nihil weapon into gear at the antique shop.
Skills
Every Persona carries a skill set, and the categories decide who can hurt what. Our skills guide lists them all with power values: the three physical types, Slash, Strike and Pierce, then Fire, Ice, Electricity and Wind, then Light and Darkness for instant kills, then recovery, enhancement, ailment, special, Almighty, passive and navigator skills, and finally the fusion spells.
Two things follow from that list. Physical skills cost HP rather than SP, which is what makes them the currency of long Tartarus runs. And a party with a hole in its coverage, no Strike for the Dancing Hands or no elements for the Fortune phase of Nyx, is a party that will lose fights it should win, which is covered in our bosses guide.
Leveling and money
Our leveling guide has five methods, and they stack.
Money follows the same routes, with one wrinkle: once you make your first fusion weapon, the rare gold Personas in Tartarus stop dropping coins and start dropping blank weapons instead. After that, income comes from coin Arcana shuffles, treasure chests and Velvet Room request rewards, which our items guide covers.
Frequently asked questions
Which social stat should I raise first?
Charm. It gates Yukari's link at rank 6, Nozomi's at rank 3 and the bar request at max, and exams raise it for free if you are studying anyway.
How many social links are there?
One per Arcana, each maxing at rank 10, and several swap character depending on which protagonist you chose. The full list with unlock conditions is in the table above.
What is the fastest way to level?
Farming the Reaper on Peaceful difficulty. If you would rather not exploit it, revisiting cleared Tartarus floors with the Rarity Fortune active is the strongest ordinary method.
Do I lose a Persona when I fuse it?
It leaves your stock, but it is recorded in the compendium and can be bought back for a fee, so nothing is ever permanently gone.
