Npcs

Two kinds of stranger matter in Dark Souls 3: the red phantoms who step into your world uninvited and drop the game's rarest gear when they lose, and the one knight in The Ringed City who keeps turning up to help. This guide covers both from our two Dark Souls 3 NPC pages. The friendly residents of Firelink Shrine, from Andre to Sirris, have their own section in the mechanics guide.

NPC invaders

Dark spirits arrive at fixed points as you progress, and our NPC invaders page argues they are worth provoking rather than avoiding, because their drops cannot be found any other way. One trick recurs: invaders can be hurt by ordinary enemies, so leading them into a crowd or a Black Knight does the work for you.

Two more invaders appear on our other pages rather than this one: the Pale Shade of Londor, who invades in Farron Keep and Irithyll after you anger Yuria and leaves the Pale Shade Set in Firelink, and the fly-crypt invader behind an illusory wall in the Painted World of Ariandel.

Lapp

Lapp is the amnesiac knight of The Ringed City, killable, full of hints about hidden treasure, and available as a summon for two of the DLC's bosses. Our Lapp locations page tracks him through five meetings.

  1. Dreg Heap. From the first DLC bonfire go down the hill, left into the ruins, and onto the crumbling stones to fall into the library. Exit, keep right along the wall past the first Angel, pass through the building, and a tower collapses ahead; walk across it to find him.
  2. Earthen Peak Ruins. Beside the bonfire he sends you after a treasure in the swamp. Enter the cave under the giant roots, hug the wall to a dead end holding a Titanite Slab, and return to him for a reward.
  3. Ringed Inner Wall. On the balcony by the bonfire, across the room from the elevator gate.
  4. Above the Swamp. After solving the Show Your Humanity puzzle to reveal the Purging Monument, jump from the ledge to its right, cross the bridge and turn left; the path ends in a round room full of chairs where he sits.
  5. Before the Shared Grave bonfire. Where you first fight Darkeater Midir on the stone bridge, cross, turn right inside, and look in the first room on the right.

Finish his story and he rewards you with his armor. His summon sign appears for the Demon Prince, alongside Slave Knight Gael, and for Halflight, Spear of the Church; complete his questline and Unbreakable Patches can be summoned for Halflight too. Both fights are in our bosses guide, and his Earthen Peak stretch is walked step by step in our Earthen Peak Ruins walkthrough.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to fight NPC invaders alone?

No. They take damage from the level's own enemies, so pulling them into a group, or into the Black Knight near Tsorig, is the recommended approach on our page.

Can Lapp die?

Yes, he is killable. Keeping him alive through all five meetings is what unlocks his armor and the Patches summon.
