Mechanics
Dark Souls 3 teaches by killing you, and most of what it teaches is systems: why a dodge beats a block, why a +10 sword outscales a boss weapon, why the shrine fills with merchants for some players and stays empty for others. This guide gathers our eight Dark Souls 3 mechanics pages into one read, in roughly the order a new Unkindled needs them: how to fight, how to level and farm, how to upgrade what you swing, who to bring home to Firelink, which covenants we cover, where the walls are lying to you, and what changes after the credits. The items those systems consume are in the items guide.
Combat habits that survive every area
Our combat tips page reduces the game to patience. Bait first: let an enemy swing, make it miss with a dodge or parry, and take it down in the recovery, which works best on enemies with long cooldowns. Learn each moveset, because every enemy has a limited set of animations and bosses only feel unreadable until you have watched theirs; the transition when a boss changes form is a short window for free hits before you go back to studying. Never drink Estus inside melee range. Bait, dodge, open distance, then heal, or simply run and come back. Split groups by pulling a few enemies at a time with a ranged shot or a hit-and-run, and fight them on ground you choose rather than on cliffs.
On defence, the page ranks the options. Dodging costs less stamina than blocking and a sideways roll sets up your own attack, so it is the default. Shields still earn their weight against crossbows and against several enemies at once, as long as you step back to refill stamina afterwards. Parrying needs a shield that can parry (not all do; some pass your right-hand Weapon Art through instead) or a tool like the Parrying Dagger: lock on, stand in range, and press as the swing starts, practised on weak enemies early. Every weapon also carries a Weapon Art that spends FP, so FP is shared between arts and spells. Keep a bow in the second slot and pair it with bombs against heavy enemies, and give magic room, since casts take longer than swings.
Leveling and souls
Levels come from the Fire Keeper, who appears in Firelink Shrine after Iudex Gundyr, and each level puts souls into one attribute. Dying sends you back to the last bonfire, drops every soul you carried as a bloodstain, and respawns the area except for bosses and some hostile NPCs; die again before touching the stain and the souls are gone. Our leveling page warns against stacking one stat, since attributes have diminishing returns and a melee character should never be putting points into Faith or Intelligence ahead of Strength. It also names two farming spots.
| Farm | Where | Yield | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| The giant's spears | Undead Settlement, from the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire | About 1,000 souls per run | Take the elevator down inside the giant's tower, come back and go up, befriend him; his spears then only hit enemies, so lure them into his range |
| The Dragon-Kiln Mausoleum | Archdragon Peak, reached with the Path of the Dragon gesture after Oceiros | 5,280 souls per kill, over 900,000 an hour | An infinitely spawning enemy that dies in three or four hits; wear the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring and hold the Shield of Want |
Reinforcement and infusion
Andre in Firelink Shrine is the only blacksmith, and he handles both jobs for a little souls plus materials. Armor cannot be upgraded at all, which our reinforcement and infusion page counts as a mercy for your Titanite supply. Weapons fall into three upgrade tracks.
| Track | Cap | Materials |
|---|---|---|
| Regular weapons | +10 | Titanite Shards to +3, Large Titanite Shards +4 to +6, Titanite Chunks +7 to +9, one Titanite Slab for +10 |
| Special weapons (many mini-boss and unique drops, such as the Black Knight Sword or Dragonslayer Greatbow) | +5 | Twinkling Titanite to +4, a Titanite Slab for +5 |
| Boss weapons, transposed by Ludleth of Courland once he holds the Transposing Kiln the Curse-Rotted Greatwood drops | +5 | Titanite Scale (from hostile Giant Crystal Lizards) to +4, a Titanite Slab for +5 |
Infusion reshapes what a weapon scales with. It is off the table for almost everything upgraded with Twinkling Titanite, every boss weapon, weapons whose Weapon Art already buffs them (the Butcher Knife, the Sunlight Straight Sword) and anything with built-in elemental damage. Andre offers the basic infusions from the start and needs a coal for each further group.
| Coal | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| Farron Coal | Heavy, Sharp, Poison |
| Sage's Coal | Crystal, Blessed, Deep |
| Giant's Coal | Lightning, Simple, Chaos |
| Profaned Coal | Dark, Blood, Hollow |
| Infusion | Trade |
|---|---|
| Heavy | Better Strength scaling, no Dexterity scaling |
| Sharp | Much better Dexterity scaling, less Strength |
| Refined | Evens out Strength and Dexterity scaling |
| Raw | Higher base damage, no scaling |
| Crystal | Intelligence scaling and magic damage, less Strength and Dexterity |
| Simple | Weaker Intelligence scaling than Crystal, but slow FP regeneration |
| Fire | Fire damage, no scaling |
| Chaos | Intelligence and Faith scaling with fire damage |
| Lightning | Faith scaling with lightning damage |
| Blessed | Faith scaling, 20 percent bonus against reanimated enemies, slow HP regeneration |
| Deep | Dark damage, no scaling |
| Dark | Intelligence and Faith scaling with dark damage |
| Blood | More bleed build-up |
| Poison | More poison build-up |
| Hollow | Adds Luck scaling, lowers Strength |
| Shriving | Removes the infusion; reinforcement level is untouched |
Letter grades hide three sub-levels each, so an A on one weapon is not an A on another. Read the actual attack values on the right of Andre's menu while you scroll through infusions: an even Strength and Dexterity spread usually wants Refined, a Strength character holding a Dexterity weapon usually wants Heavy. Which stones and gems to hunt for is in the items guide, and the weapon classes themselves are on our weapons guide.
Who to bring home to Firelink
Firelink Shrine only fills up if you find its residents. Our NPC recruitment page follows each one from first meeting to the ways their story can end, several of them badly.
| NPC | Where you find them | What they add | How it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Andre the Blacksmith | Firelink Shrine from the start | Reinforcement, infusion, Estus upgrades | Kill him and he stops serving you until you pay at the Velka altar under the Dilapidated Bridge |
| Shrine Handmaid | Firelink Shrine from the start | The main shop, grown by every ash you bring; a second Handmaid in the Untended Graves sells unique stock | Kill her and she returns charging 20 percent more, again fixed at the Velka altar |
| Cornyx | Caged on a rooftop in the Undead Settlement, past the firebomb-throwing hollows | Pyromancies, expanded by the tomes you bring | None |
| Greirat | A cell under the High Wall, opened with the Cell Key | A shop that grows each time you send him scavenging | Send him to Irithyll without Siegward there or Patches tipped off and he dies; Lothric Castle kills him regardless |
| Hawkwood | Firelink Shrine | A Heavy Gem after the Greatwood or Crystal Sage, the Farron Ring after the Abyss Watchers | Use the Path of the Dragon gesture in Archdragon Peak and he challenges you at the Abyss Watchers arena; lose and he takes your Twinkling Dragon Torso Stone |
| Irina of Carim | Behind a locked door deep in the Undead Settlement, opened with the Grave Key | Miracles from Braille tomes | Teach her dark miracles from Deep or Londor tomes and Eygon takes her away; learn every holy miracle instead and she becomes a Fire Keeper |
| Karla | A cell in Irithyll Dungeon | Dark spells from the same tomes, with no consequences | None |
| Leonhard | Firelink after the Tower on the Wall bonfire or Vordt | Cracked Red Eye Orbs, the Lift Chamber Key, and a Red Eye Orb for killing the Darkwraith below the High Wall | He murders Rosaria after Yhorm or the Profaned Capital bonfire; take her Black Eye Orb to Anor Londo to invade him |
| Ludleth of Courland | On his throne in Firelink | Soul transposition once you bring the kiln | Killing him drops the Skull Ring |
| Orbeck of Vinheim | By the Crystal Sage's arena on the Road of Sacrifices, if you have 10 Intelligence | Sorceries and, with the right scrolls and purchases, the Young Dragon and Slumbering Dragoncrest rings | Bring him fewer than four scrolls and he leaves for good |
| Siegward of Catarina | The Undead Settlement on the way to the Road of Sacrifices | Siegbräu and two gestures for helping with the fire demon; his summon against Yhorm | He needs his armor back from Patches at the Cleansing Chapel to continue |
| Sirris of the Sunless Realms | Firelink after you reach Farron Keep | Summons, the Silvercat Ring for killing Creighton, and an offer of knighthood | Join Rosaria's Fingers and you lose her |
| Rosaria | Above the Cathedral of the Deep's rafters | Respec and appearance changes as head of Rosaria's Fingers | See Leonhard |
| The Giant of the Undead Settlement | Top of the tower he throws spears from | Peace, and covering fire on enemies, for a white birch branch | When he dies you find the Hawk Ring beside him |
The same page lists the crow's trades on Firelink's roof, reached with the Tower Key. The ones players actually chase: a Coiled Sword Fragment becomes a Titanite Slab, Siegbräu becomes the Armor of the Sun, a Vertebra Shackle becomes Lucatiel's Mask, a Xanthous Crown becomes a Lightning Gem, and a Blacksmith Hammer or an Avelyn becomes a Titanite Scale.
Covenants
We cover two covenants in depth, one from each end of the game, and both follow the same shape: find the altar, equip the item, turn in tokens for two tiers of rewards.
| Covenant | Where to join | Token | 10 turned in | 30 turned in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rosaria's Fingers | After the Deacons of the Deep, take the elevator by the Cleansing Chapel bonfire to the Cathedral roof, drop to the terrace and the ledge below, and follow the path to Rosaria's bonfire | Pale Tongue, from successful invasions as a red phantom or from Darkwraiths | Obscuring Ring | Man-Grub's Staff |
| Spears of the Church | The Ringed City: beat Darkeater Midir for the covenant item, then offer at the Divine Spear Monument halfway up the hill left of the elevator's bottom | Filianore's Spear Ornament, from Ringed Knights or from defending as a summoned Spear | Young Grass Dew | Divine Spear Fragment |
Rosaria's Fingers is also the only place to redistribute stats or change your appearance, and joining it ends Sirris's story. Spears of the Church summons are rare; if none arrive, resurrecting Judicator Argo at the Purging Monument restarts the defence, which is dangerous but sometimes necessary once Halflight is already dead. Other covenants show up on our pages only through their rewards: the Darkmoon Ring from the Blades of the Darkmoon's first rank, the Wolf Ring from the Watchdogs of Farron's second, and the Warmth pyromancy from the Mound-Makers.
Illusory walls
A hit or a roll drops any fake wall, and our illusory walls page walks to every one, from the shrine roof to the Ringed City. What each area hides:
| Area | Walls | Behind them |
|---|---|---|
| Firelink Shrine | 1, on the beam past the broken bridge (Tower Key) | Covetous Silver Serpent Ring |
| Farron Keep | 1, off the balcony path from the Farron bonfire | Dreamchaser's Ashes |
| Catacombs of Carthus | 2 | Carthus Pyromancy Tome, Ring of Steel Protection +2, a Sharp Gem |
| Smouldering Lake | 5, starting in the Old King's Antechamber | A Large Titanite Shard and the Izalith Staff among them |
| Irithyll of the Boreal Valley | 5, around the Church of Yorshka and Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfires | Magic Clutch Ring |
| Lothric Castle | 1, up the ladder by the barrels | Winged Knight Armor Set and the Sacred Bloom Shield |
| Untended Graves | 3, linked to one another | Eye of a Fire Keeper |
| Grand Archives | 1, between two pillars on the upper level | An Outrider Knight and its armor |
| Painted World of Ariandel | 2, in the crypt of giant flies | Pyromancer's Parting Flame and an NPC invader |
| Dreg Heap | 1, at the end of the Murkmen building | A Great Soul Dreg and the +3 Covetous Silver Serpent Ring |
| The Ringed City | 4: one by a decorative archway, three in the statue room off the Inner Wall elevator | The path down to Darkeater Midir |
New Game Plus
After the credits the game asks whether to begin New Game Plus, and you can also start it later from any bonfire, so our NG+ page suggests sweeping every corner for rare items, levelling further and buying out the vendors first. Enemies are more numerous and tougher, and pay more souls and loot for it; finishing the cycle unlocks NG++ in turn.
| Carries over | Resets |
|---|---|
| Weapons, shields, items and their upgrades | Bonfires, bosses, NPCs and enemies |
| Every attribute and your character level | Gestures, keys and specialised items |
| Covenant pledges | The world, now with more and tougher enemies |
| Bonfire level and Estus Flask level |
Since NPCs and vendors return in the new cycle, the page adds that there is nothing to lose by killing them at the end of the old one, out of curiosity or for their drops. The rings that only exist from NG+ onward are listed in the items guide.
Frequently asked questions
Should I block or dodge?
Dodge by default; it costs less stamina and positions you for a counter. Raise the shield against crossbows and crowds, and only trust a shield with 100 percent physical block.
Can I fix a bad stat spread?
Only through Rosaria in the Cathedral of the Deep, which means joining Rosaria's Fingers. Our character builds page recommends respeccing there around level 50 if you want to switch to a Faith or Intelligence build.
What is the fastest way to farm souls?
The infinite spawn by the Dragon-Kiln Mausoleum in Archdragon Peak, at 5,280 souls a kill with the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring and Shield of Want equipped. Early on, befriend the Undead Settlement giant and farm under his spears instead.
Do I keep my covenant rank in New Game Plus?
Yes. Covenant pledges, along with weapons, stats and Estus level, carry over. Keys, gestures and bosses reset.
