Conan Exiles Star Metal: Meteor Showers, Explosives And The Bar Recipe

Star metal is the only ore in Conan Exiles you cannot go and mine on demand. There are no permanent nodes for it. It arrives on its own schedule, as a meteor shower over one corner of the map, and then it sits there inside a shell that ordinary tools cannot open. Nothing else in the game asks you to arrive with a bag of explosives before the mining starts. That is the whole character of this material, and it is why so many players have the recipes and none of the metal.

Where the meteors land

On the Exiled Lands, showers fall over the snowy northwest, in the ground northeast of the Mounds of the Dead and around Frostneedle Forest. That is the only part of the Exiled Lands they land in, so camping anywhere else is wasted time. On the Isle of Siptah the drop zone is the ring around the Tower at the centre of the island instead.

Since both zones are cold, this doubles neatly with a black ice run, which you are going to want anyway for reasons the recipe below makes obvious.

Opening a meteorite

A fallen meteorite is a core inside a hardened outer shell. The shell is a strange thing mechanically: it has only a single hit point, and yet a pick will not touch it. Explosive damage is the only damage it recognises, so you need one of the following, and you need it in your inventory before you make the trip.

  • Explosive jars, the cheap bulk answer, easy to mass produce before you set out
  • Explosive arrows, which many players prefer because one dragonpowder makes ten of them and you can aim at a specific meteor from a distance
  • Exploding traps and demon-fire orbs, which do the same job if that is what you have

All of that traces back to dragonpowder, which our leveling guide covers as an experience engine in its own right: steelfire, demon blood, crystal and brimstone. The explosives you throw at a meteorite are worth levels on their own before they ever crack a shell.

Once the shell is off, the exposed core takes roughly fifteen to twenty swings before it collapses, so you get a real amount per meteorite rather than a token. The catch is the tool: only a tier four pick or better will pull ore out of it, which in practice means a hardened steel pick. Arriving with explosives and a steel pick is a common way to waste a meteor shower.

Smelting star metal bars

The ore is not the finished material. A furnace takes two star metal ore, one brimstone and one black ice, and returns a single star metal bar after about twenty seconds. Every ingredient in that line is something you had to travel for, which is a fair summary of the material as a whole.

What the bars make is the top tier of weapons and tools, a step above hardened steel. Our legendary weapons page covers the other route to a weapon at that level, which is chests and boss keys rather than a forge, and the resources guide puts the two paths side by side.
