Conan Exiles Legendary Weapons: Where They Drop, What They Break Into
Almost everything at the top of Conan Exiles is a material problem, answered by somebody who went north and got the black ice. Legendary weapons are mostly a fighting problem instead: they come out of guarded chests and off the bodies of elite NPCs, and for most of them there is no recipe to look up. The exception is worth knowing about, because a few do have a forge recipe, and the price is thirty star metal bars.
Read the stats in game, not here
It is worth being straight about this before you go any further. We compiled our legendary weapon stat sheet several updates ago, and checking two entries against the current game found both of them rebalanced: Hanuman's Gada has gone from 59 damage at 27 percent armor penetration to 96 on a light swing, 115 on a heavy one, at 45 percent, and its durability has doubled. Lovetap's durability has doubled too, and it now carries a second equipment effect it did not have before.
Two samples out of two is enough. Funcom has also added whole weapon classes since, katanas and war sickles among them, so the roster itself is larger than the forty we originally listed. What follows is therefore an index of what exists and how to get hold of it, which has stayed true, rather than a table of numbers that has not. Check the damage figure on the item in front of you.
Two entries verified against the current game
| Weapon | Damage, light and heavy | Armor penetration | Durability | Weight | Effects |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hanuman's Gada | 96 / 115 | 45.0% | 4800 | 50.00 | Sunder |
| Lovetap | 1 / 1 | Not applicable | 6600 | 4.55 | Shieldsmash, Concussive |
The Gada's weight of 50 is not a misprint, and it is worth dwelling on, because the other four legendary hammers we recorded all sit near 5. The game is explicit about the trade in the weapon's own description: an oversized head that is heavy and awkward to swing, and a great deal of damage when it lands. You are carrying ten hammers' worth of encumbrance for the hardest hit in the class.
Lovetap is a thrall catcher, not a weapon
Lovetap's single point of damage is real, and it is the entire design. The club deals concussion damage and nothing else, 30 on a light attack and 45 on a heavy one, which means it knocks people unconscious without ever killing them. Its in game description calls it a club that refuses to kill.
That makes it the answer to a complaint every player of this game has had. As our thrall capturing guide warns, the ordinary truncheon will finish the job you did not want finished if you swing it too freely, and watching the white marker above an NPC's health bar is the usual defence. A club that deals a single point of damage per swing takes the risk out of it almost entirely. If you are farming crafters at the settlements on our named thralls page, this is the legendary to hunt for first, ahead of anything that hits harder.
Its listed equipment effects are Shieldsmash and Concussive. One database also records it as sundering on both light and heavy attacks, which the other does not carry, so treat sunder as likely behaviour rather than a printed effect.
A few of them can be forged
The general rule is that legendaries are taken rather than made, but it is a rule with holes in it. Lovetap has a recipe: a campaign blacksmith's bench, four minutes, and one weapon handle, thirty star metal bars and ten alchemical base. It pays out 2,466 experience for the craft.
Thirty star metal bars is a serious outlay, and it tells you how the game values this tier. Our star metal page covers what sixty ore, thirty brimstone and thirty black ice actually costs in meteor showers and explosives. For most players the recipe is a curiosity rather than a plan; the point is knowing that if a specific legendary is the one you want and the bosses refuse to hand it over, a forge may be an option worth checking.
The original forty, by class
One thing the old list got right and time has not changed much: the special effect belongs to the weapon class rather than to the individual weapon. Pick the effect you want, then pick from that row.
| Class | Shared effect | The five |
|---|---|---|
| Axes | Shieldsmash | Reaver's Axe, Strangely Familiar Axe, Axe of the Lion, Battle-axe of the Berserkers, Glimmermoon |
| Swords | Cripple | Tulwar of Amir Khurum, Dueling Blade of the Hawk, The Wightblade, The Bane of Khostral Khel, El's Drinker |
| Greatswords | Cripple | The Watchblade, The Papyrus Blade, Jedias Greatsaber, Baal-pteor's Razor, Blade of the Adventurer |
| Maces | Shieldsmash | Lovetap, Aja's Bane, The Unintelligible, Momentum, The Brittle Bastard |
| Hammers | Sunder | Sledge of Tsotha-lanti, Bec-de-Corbin, Forgelight, Baal-pteor's Lodestone, Hanuman's Gada |
| Daggers | Bleed | Akbitanan Blades, Heartsblood, Daggers of Nameless Days, Zhaibar Knives, The Grim |
| Spears | None, attribute bonuses instead | Warspear of the Black Circle, Gavain's Rusty Pike, The Impaler, Vaulting Pole, Black Dragon Pike |
| Bows | None, attribute bonuses instead | Frostshot, Bessie's Bow, The Huntress, Eye of the Khan, Splinter |
Several of these carry an attribute bonus on top of the class effect, and that is where the real choice sits. Within the axes, one favours Grit, one Strength and one Health. Among the swords it is Agility, Vitality and Strength. The bows are the clearest case of all, since four of the five shared the same damage and durability figures in our records, which leaves the attribute bonus as the only real difference and makes the arrow you load more important than the bow you load it into.
How one ends up in your hands
The first route is the legendary chest, and it has two requirements. You must be past level 60, and you must be carrying skeleton keys, which come off boss enemies rather than ordinary ones. Those bosses are the gigantic beasts scattered through the world, so the key is itself a fight, and the chest is guarded once you get there.
The second route is killing the right people, and it is the one most players underrate. A long list of elite NPCs drops legendaries directly: the Black Hand Captain, the Heirs of the North Chieftain, the Forgotten Tribe Chieftain, the Black Dragon Commander, the Kinscourge, the Demon Spider, the Tooth of Dagon, Freke the Wild and the veterans of most factions among them.
That changes how you plan an afternoon. A sweep of a major settlement is a legendary hunt and a thrall hunt at the same time, which is the argument for going to Sepermeru or the Mounds of the Dead rather than farming a quiet corner. The Demon Spider is a useful double too, since it lives at the summoning circle reachable through Weaver's Hollow and Scuttler's Shortcut, and Scuttler's Shortcut is one of the five crystal caves.
Repairing them
A legendary does not take an ordinary repair, and the method has moved at least once. Our original guide documented the legendary weapon repair kit: take blacksmith at level 10, upgrade it at 60 for an improved blacksmith's bench, put a named thrall on that bench, and build the kit from a master repair kit and two alchemical base oil.
The game's own wiki now states something narrower, that legendary and unique items can only be repaired at the Anvil of the Giant-kings. Find out which applies on your build before a weapon you care about wears out, because a legendary you cannot repair is a legendary on a timer. The durability numbers are generous at this tier, but The Impaler in the spear row was the shortest lived thing we recorded and it will not last forever.
The ones you do not want are worth a fortune
Never leave a duplicate legendary in a chest. A dismantling bench pulls it apart into the materials of its own tier, and at this level those are the materials you would otherwise be climbing a mountain for. Both weapons we checked break down identically: a weapon handle, ten star metal bars and four alchemical base, rising to twelve star metal bars on an improved dismantling bench.
Twelve star metal bars is a meteor shower's worth of work, explosives and all, handed over for something you were never going to swing. If star metal is what your gear is waiting on, killing bosses may genuinely beat mining for it, which reverses the usual order of this game.
Set that against the forge price above and the economics are clear enough. Crafting Lovetap costs thirty star metal bars and ten alchemical base; dismantling one returns ten to twelve bars and four base. You get roughly a third of it back, so there is no loop here and no free metal: never build one in order to break it. Breaking up something a boss gave you, on the other hand, is pure profit.
Our star metal page covers the mining route for comparison, our armor guide covers the other half of a build, and the Conan Exiles guide has everything else.
