Skyward Sword Heart Pieces: All 24 Locations And What Each Asks For

Skyward Sword hides 24 Heart Pieces and takes four of them for every heart, so the whole hunt is worth six hearts. That is the same amount the dungeon bosses hand over between them, which is the useful way to think about the collection: it is a second, slower run at the health bar that you pay for in errands rather than in boss fights. Sorting these 24 by where they sit is how most lists do it, and it does not help much, because the ones in Faron are not alike. Sorted by what each one asks of you, the list turns into a plan.

Four to a heart, and the ceiling they raise

Link starts with six hearts. The six dungeons pay a Heart Container each, which takes him to twelve, and the 24 pieces are worth six more, which is eighteen. The last two hearts are not found at all: they are the two Life Medals, and a Life Medal only counts while it is sitting in the Adventure Pouch, so the twenty heart maximum costs two pouch slots that would otherwise hold a shield or a potion. One Life Medal is Beedle's, priced at 800 rupees on our shops page, and the other is a Goddess Cube chest. Nothing else moves the bar, which means the 24 pieces below are worth as much health as every dungeon boss in the game put together.

Six Goddess Cube chests, none of them where the cube is

A quarter of the collection runs through the Goddess Cubes, and this is the part that sends people in circles. A Skyward Strike on a cube down on the surface fires it into the sky, where it becomes a locked chest on some island, so the cube and the reward are never in the same province and often not even in the same half of the game. Six pieces arrive this way. The cube outside Skyview Temple pays out on an island south of Skyloft; the cube at the Temple of Time, reached by the minecart, and the cube below the Great Tree bird statue in Faron both open chests up in the clouds; the cube at Eldin's northeastern sandslide and the cube at the Pirate Stronghold entrance both pay out over Skyloft; and the cube outside the Volcano Summit opens its chest at Bug Rock. Strike every cube you walk past and collect the sky side in one flight later, rather than flying up for each one.

Five that wait on a specific tool

Five pieces are locked behind a piece of kit rather than behind a puzzle, so they are simply unavailable until the dungeon that hands the tool over is done. The Beetle takes the crystal switch inside the bird statue in Skyview Temple. The Clawshots get Link onto the Knight Academy roof, down the chimney and into the cupboard in Zelda's room. The Mogma Mitts dig two of them up, one from the soil patch in the Fire Sanctuary where a Mogma is hiding and one from the patch marked by butterflies at the Volcano Summit. The last needs a Timeshift Stone and the Clawshots together to reach the chest at the Sandship's stern. Our items guide lists which dungeon hands over each of those tools, and none of these five is worth a return trip on its own; fold them into the visit you are already making.

Two behind a bomb and two you can simply walk to

The cheapest four on the list. Two cracked walls hide a piece each, one in the northeastern corner of the Lanayru Desert and one in the southwestern part of Faron Woods, and both open to a single bomb once Ledd has handed over the Bomb Bag in the Earth Temple. The other two ask for nothing but footwork: the tightrope strung across the Great Tree in Faron Woods, and the climb up the platforms by the bone bridge on Eldin Volcano. If you are starting the collection late and want four quickly, these are the four.

Four that are scores, not locations

Four pieces are prizes for hitting a number, and they are the ones that turn a collection run into an evening. Skydiving Roulette on Fun Fun Island wants a ten times multiplier landed on the 50 rupee tile. Fledge's bow minigame, Pumpkin Pull, wants more than 600 points. The Rickety Coaster at the Shipyard wants the Heart Stopping course finished in under 65 seconds. The fourth is the Thunder Dragon's Lightning Round at Lanayru Gorge, which pays a Heart Piece for a fourth straight win and nothing extra if you keep going and lose, so the piece is banked by stopping at four and claiming it between fights. Two of those minigames are not open by default: the roulette arrives with Dodoh's party wheel and Pumpkin Pull arrives with Fledge's training, both on our side quests page.

Two the Lumpy Pumpkin owes you

The pumpkin bar in the sky pays two pieces, and it pays the first one for vandalism. Rolling into the wall upstairs brings the chandelier down, and the piece is on the floor beside it. Pumm then puts Link to work paying the damage off in three jobs: a bowl of soup carried to Eagus while it is still hot, which is a five minute limit, a load of pumpkins carried to the shed without dropping any, and finally a night shift backing Kina on the Goddess's Harp. That chain ends in the second piece. It also needs the Harp in hand, so the bill sits unpaid for a long stretch of the game and that is fine.

Three that are handed over

The last three are bought or given. Batreaux hands one over at ten Gratitude Crystals, the second rung of his ladder and the earliest of the three; our Gratitude Crystals page has the rest of that ladder. Gorko asks for a specific symbol on a Goddess Wall once the Fire Sanctuary is behind you, and pays a piece for the drawing, which is the one reward on our Goddess Walls page that is not ammunition or rupees. Beedle sells one outright at 1,600 rupees, which is the single most expensive line in his shop, though returning his lost beetle takes 50 percent off one purchase and that is the purchase to spend it on.

The order that wastes the least time

Strike cubes as you pass them and never fly up for one chest. Leave the five tool pieces inside the trips you are making anyway. Do the Lumpy Pumpkin chain the first night you have the Harp, because two of its three jobs are timed or fiddly and the bar is on the way to everywhere. Save the four scores for last, since three of them are practice rather than progress and the fourth, the Lightning Round, only opens at Lanayru Gorge late on. The walkthrough has the order the game itself demands, and the bosses page covers the fights the Lightning Round replays.
