Skyward Sword Gratitude Crystals: All 80, Batreaux's Rewards In Order

There are 80 Gratitude Crystals in Skyward Sword and exactly one person who wants them. Batreaux, the demon living under Skyloft who would rather be human, is the whole market: no shop takes crystals, no upgrade needs them, and nothing else in the game reacts to your total. That makes this the simplest currency in the game to plan around, because both the supply and the demand are fixed lists. Sixty five of the 80 are paid out by twelve side quests. The other fifteen are lying on the ground at night.

Batreaux counts a running total, he does not charge a price

This is the part worth getting right before you start, because reading his rewards as prices makes the job look roughly twice as long as it is. Batreaux does not sell anything. He keeps a running count of the crystals he has been given, and each reward arrives as that count passes a mark. The marks are 5, 10, 30, 40, 50, 70 and 80, and reaching 80 means every crystal in the game is in his hands. Nothing is deducted along the way, so the Medium Wallet at five does not set you back to zero, and the Tycoon Wallet at 80 is the end of the whole collection rather than a separate bill.

Total givenWhat Batreaux hands over
5Medium Wallet, 500 rupees
10Piece of Heart
30Big Wallet, 1,000 rupees, and the Cursed Medal
40a Gold Rupee, worth 300
50Giant Wallet, 5,000 rupees
70two Gold Rupees, worth 600
80Tycoon Wallet, 9,000 rupees

Four of the seven rungs are wallets, and that is the real reason to do any of this. Beedle's shelf adds up to 5,650 rupees across his six lines, a figure our enemies and shops guide totals up, and that is more than a Giant Wallet holds, so the crystal ladder is what makes his shelf affordable rather than a side dish. The Piece of Heart at ten is one of the 24 on our Heart Pieces page, and it is the earliest piece on that list that needs no tool at all.

The twelve quests that pay 65

Every crystal-paying job is a Skyloft errand, and eleven of the twelve pay five. The exception is the one about the injured Loftwing, which pays ten because two people thank you for it. Our side quests page has what each one asks for and the story flag that opens it; the table here is the payout, because the arithmetic is what people come for.

The fifteen loose ones, and why they only exist after dark

The remaining fifteen are not rewards. They sit around Skyloft and the sky as pickups, and they are only there at night, which is why a player who has never slept in the Knight Academy bed can finish twelve quests and still be fifteen short with no idea where to look. Ten of them are reachable as soon as you can wander the island after dark. The last five sit behind kit you get later, so a clean sweep needs a second night walk once the Clawshots are in the bag.

Dowsing is what turns this from a search into a route. Gratitude Crystals become a dowsing target once the missing child job is done, which makes that quest the one to do first regardless of what else is open, and after that the sword points at each loose crystal in turn. Skyloft at night also has Chuchus and Keese out, two of the three entries on our enemies page that are ever met up in the sky, so bring a shield on the walk.

The Cursed Medal is a trap worth understanding

The thirty mark pays twice, and the second half of it is a medal most players carry once and never again. The Cursed Medal raises the rate at which treasure and rupees turn up in the field, which sounds like exactly what the Scrap Shop recipes on our items guide want, but it seals the Adventure Pouch while it is equipped, potions included. It also takes a pouch slot to do it. Carry it on a deliberate farming run with no fighting planned, take it out before a dungeon, and remember that pouch space is the same space the two Life Medals need if you are chasing the twenty heart maximum.

The fastest way to 80

Do the missing child job first for the dowsing target. Sleep to night and walk the island once early, which is ten crystals for about ten minutes of work and gets you past the five and ten marks before the second dungeon. Pick up the quest crystals as the story unlocks them rather than saving them, since several of those quests only open after a specific fight and the list will not be complete until the back half of the game anyway. Then take one last night walk with the Clawshots for the final five. The walkthrough marks the points where the Skyloft jobs open up.
