Mechanics
Six of our Monster Hunter Rise pages describe systems rather than things to hunt or craft, and five of the six arrived with Sunbreak. They range from a photo request you complete once and forget to a movement tool you press several hundred times per hunt, and the useful way to sort them is by exactly that: how often you will come back.
That order also happens to be the order of investment. The one-time unlocks each cost an afternoon. Master Rank costs the whole expansion. Anomaly Research has no end. The Wirebug costs nothing and is used more than all of the others together.
The ladder
| System | How often you return | Opens at | What it gives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elgado Cohoots | Once | Early in the Sunbreak story, finishable after Master Rank 4 | A layered armor mask from Pasapato |
| Palamute Silkbinder | Once | Master Rank 2 | A Palamute weapon from Gatlin |
| Layered Armor | Once per set | Senri from the start; Master Rank sets after the story and Proof of Courage | Cosmetic armor over your real set |
| Master Rank | Until the cap | After Uninvited Guest, the first Sunbreak quest | Every Sunbreak quest, monster and material |
| Anomaly Research | Open-ended | Master Rank 10, after the final boss | 31 afflicted hunts and the materials for Master Rank layered armor |
| Wirebug | Every hunt | The start of the base game | Movement, recovery and every Silkbind attack |
Once: the three Elgado unlocks
The Cohoots request is handed out by Pasapato the Historian near the canteen almost as soon as you reach Elgado, and our page's main point is that it cannot be finished when you get it. Two of the three owls exist at that stage: your own, which follows you around the Command Post, the canteen and Chichae, and the one beside Admiral Galleus. The third belongs to Doctor Tadori, who only joins the outpost after you hunt an Astalos for Kagero's Master Rank 4 request. Photograph all three, return to Pasapato, and the layered mask is yours.
The Palamute Silkbinder is a Master Rank 2 side quest from Gatlin the Researcher that asks for two Steel Gajau Whiskers, and the page is really a farming route. Gajau spawn in the Flooded Forest, Lava Caverns, Frost Islands and Shrine Ruins, but Sunbreak's new small monsters have thinned them out, so the page picks zones 5 and 8 of the Frost Islands, where four spawn roughly every five minutes. The whisker is a 20 percent carve and each Gajau can be carved once, so the recommended loop is a Frost Islands hunt with repeated returns to those two zones and a gathering Palico along for a second chance.
Layered armor is the only one of the three that keeps a small cost after the unlock. Senri the mailman hands out the base sets, including the Loyal Dog and Striped Cat costumes for anyone who bought before release, but the Master Rank layered sets wait until the story is done and Proof of Courage is cleared, at which point Minayle at the smithy takes over. Each hunter piece then costs two Outfit Voucher+ tokens and each buddy piece one, and those tokens come from the Anomaly quests below. The page adds one rule worth knowing before you plan an outfit: Low and High Rank armor has no Master Rank layered duplicate.
Until the cap: Master Rank
Master Rank unlocks after Sunbreak's opening quest, Uninvited Guest, a Daimyo Hermitaur hunt our page calls easy because you arrive in the best High Rank gear you own. A cutscene with Admiral Galleus at Elgado sets you at Master Rank 1, and from there the page describes the same engine as High Rank: key quests from the hub raise the rank until an urgent quest appears, the urgent quest is a named hunt, and clearing it lifts the cap. Solo quests unlock alongside but do not move the rank.
The ranks matter because the rest of this folder is keyed to them. Master Rank 2 opens the Silkbinder quest, the Argosy at Elgado and the first two Royal Order weapons. Master Rank 3 and 4 open the rest of that line and the Citadel bonepiles, and Master Rank 4 also brings Tadori's Cohoot. The items guide sorts every Sunbreak material by these same gates.
Open-ended: Anomaly Research
When the final boss falls, the Master Rank cap rises to 10 and an urgent quest sends you to the Citadel to find whatever has been killing the local monsters. It is an Arzuros, afflicted by Qurio, and it is the introduction to Anomaly Research: monsters with more health, new attacks and no capture option. Afflicted parts glow red as the fight goes on. Hit a glowing part and the monster topples; leave it and the glow spreads until the monster detonates in a burst of Qurio. Landing hits on an afflicted monster can also give you Bloodblight, which drains your health and weakens your potions but returns health with every strike, so the page's advice is to attack harder, not to retreat.
The page then walks through 31 quests, and reading them as a set reveals a structure the page never spells out. They come in four tiers, gated by Master Rank 10, 20, 30 and 50, with 7 quests in the first and 8 in each of the others. Every one has a 50-minute limit. The zenny reward climbs by exactly 3,600 per tier, from 18,000 to 21,600 to 25,200 to 28,800, which is five, six, seven and eight times 3,600. The afflicted material changes with the tier as well: bones and pelts at one star, blood and monster bone at two, scales and shells at three, fangs and claws at four.
| Tier | Rank | Quests | Zenny | Afflicted material | Targets |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 star | MR 10 | 7 | 18,000 | Bone, Pelt | Arzuros, Great Izuchi, Great Baggi, Great Wroggi, Volvidon, Kulu-Ya-Ku, Lagombi |
| 2 star | MR 20 | 8 | 21,600 | Blood, Monster Bone | Aknosom, Tetranadon, Royal Ludroth, Daimyo Hermitaur, Barroth, Basarios, Bishaten, Khezu |
| 3 star | MR 30 | 8 | 25,200 | Scale, Shell | Blood Orange Bishaten, Tobi-Kadachi, Rathian, Somnacanth, Jyuratodus, Anjanath, Pukei-Pukei, Shogun Ceanataur |
| 4 star | MR 50 | 8 | 28,800 | Fang, Claw | Garangolm, Aurora Somnacanth, Goss Harag, Magnamalo, Rakna-Kadaki, Nargacuga, Barioth, Almudron |
The jump from Master Rank 30 to 50 between the third and fourth tiers is the only uneven step, and it is where the targets change from early-game monsters to the ones with hunt pages of their own on the monsters guide. The locales repeat too. The page's small-monster lists show that the Citadel, Shrine Ruins, Frost Islands and Flooded Forest each host five afflicted hunts, the Lava Caverns and Jungle four, and the Sandy Plains three, so a hunter who knows one map's layout can chain several tiers there. The per-monster tips are short but specific: bring Green sharpness for Volvidon and Basarios, Earplugs for Khezu, Meat Bait for the water monsters, and pitfall traps for an enraged Nargacuga.
Every hunt: the Wirebug
The Wirebug is the only base-game system in this bucket and the one every other page assumes. It is a charge, not a hook: each use spends one of your charges and they refill over time, and ZL plus a direction produces the move. The page's table lists the whole set: Wiredash upward, forward and targeted, a midair stop, a midair evade, the Wirefall that recovers from a knockback, and the Silkbind attacks that replace the dashes while a weapon is drawn. Ranged weapons add R to the input.
Two other pages extend it. Our beginners guide notes that you start with two charges and can find items that raise the count to three, and the endemic life list describes the wild Wirebug that adds a charge for a short time and the Great Wirebug that launches you along a fixed line from a Jewel Lily. Every Silkbind attack on the weapons guide draws on the same charges, which is why the Wirebug Whisperer skill turns up in so many of our endgame builds.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unlock Master Rank?
Own Sunbreak, finish the base game, and complete Uninvited Guest, the Daimyo Hermitaur hunt that opens the expansion. The Galleus cutscene that follows sets you at Master Rank 1.
How do I get Master Rank layered armor?
Finish the Sunbreak story, clear Proof of Courage, and talk to Minayle. Then farm Anomaly Research quests for Outfit Voucher+ tokens: two per hunter piece, one per buddy piece.
What is Bloodblight?
A status you can catch from attacking afflicted monsters. It drains your health over time and weakens healing items, but every hit you land gives some of that health back, so the cure is aggression.
Where does the rest of the game's progression live?
Quest ranks, buddies, the training area and the village shops are covered by the beginners guide, and the two-village structure of the whole game is laid out on the Monster Hunter Rise hub.
