Items

Nineteen of the 22 items our Monster Hunter Rise pages cover did not exist before Sunbreak. That is the first thing to know about this bucket: it is a Master Rank materials list with three base-game entries attached, and the question a reader brings to it is almost never what an item is. It is whether the game will let them have it yet.

So this guide sorts by that. Each item sits at the rank where our page says it first becomes available, from the canteen you can visit before your first quest to the Citadel bonepiles that open at Master Rank 4. A second column records who does the fetching, because a surprising share of Sunbreak's rarest materials are never gathered by the hunter at all.

Thirteen items on that ladder are gathered by the hunter, six by buddies on Argosy or Meowcenaries runs, and three arrive from an NPC or a quest. The six buddy items include the two most tedious to farm, the bream and the cricket, and the two that unlock whole armor sets, the gloomcloth and the snuff cap. Send your highest-level buddies with a Lagniapple, as three of our pages advise, and then go hunt something else.

Before Sunbreak: three items and one canteen

Only three pages describe items you can hold in the base game. Dangos are the meal you order before every hunt from Yamogi's tea shop, three ingredients at a time, and our page lists all 47 with their activation chance and unlock condition. Eleven are on the menu from the start. The rest arrive with quest ranks, from Cool-to-the-Core at 3-star Village or 2-star Hub through to Very Hap-peanut, unlocked at 7 stars by the Hub quest A Quartet of Horns. The chances run from 50 percent to 90, and the three at the bottom, Fruitflash, Beansplosion and Invigorating, are all damage or stamina buffs; a Dango Ticket from the Motley Mix adds 40 points to any of them.

Kamura Tickets are the base game's craft currency. Fugen hands them over after Village and Rampage quests, but the two reliable sources are quests: the 1-star Roly-Poly Lanterns, which our page says a prepared hunter clears in about 30 seconds, and the 7-star event Gales of Ibushi Blow Again at Hunter Rank 8, which guarantees a drop. They buy the Channeler and Medium armor lines and a shelf of novelty weapons from the Egg Hammer to the Watercolor Glaive, most costing one or two tickets. The Bismuth Prism is the odd one out: a Lava Caverns mineral needed once, for the Economic Stimulation quest that opens the Argosy's third submarine, and only on 4-star quests or above.

Master Rank 1: the expedition wall

The moment Master Rank opens, twelve materials become available at once, and almost every page says the same thing in its first paragraph: the same map you have walked a hundred times now carries new nodes, but only on a Master Rank expedition. Mining gives Awegite in the Shrine Ruins and Goldlite Ore in the Sandy Plains. Bonepiles give Twisted Stiffbone in the Shrine Ruins, Eroded Elder Skeleton in the Sandy Plains and the Dragonbone Artifact anywhere. Mushroom colonies give the Prized Mushroom in the Jungle and Shrine Ruins.

Three of those pages hand you a route rather than a location. The Shrine Ruins has exactly six bonepiles and the Twisted Stiffbone page orders them from the spawn point north-east and then west, with the warning that the second sits on a hilltop and the third needs the Great Wirebug beside it. The Sandy Plains has nine, and the skeleton page runs them south to north along the upper level's eastern edge through areas 1, 5, 8 and 12 before dropping to the lower level's areas 12, 9 and 5. The Goldlite page counts the same map's outcrops at twelve and walks zones 2, 6, 3, 5, 12 and 10. Between the two Sandy Plains pages you have a single loop that empties the map of both.

The other Master Rank 1 items are carved. The Prized Pelt comes off Kelbi at 30 percent and Anteka at 18, so the page sends you to the Kelbi in Shrine Ruins areas 11 and 13, with the note that they scatter while a large monster is near. The Large Herbivore Bone is a 20 percent drop from Slagtoth and Rhenoplos, best farmed during an outbreak. Rachnoid Mesmersilk comes from the Rachnoids that also hang from Rakna-Kadaki's abdomen, and the page notes they retreat when a large monster appears, as the Kelbi do.

Two are large-monster parts with the odds spelled out. The Barroth Crown is a 70 percent carve from a broken head against a 6 percent target reward, which is why the page spends its length on how to break the head: Partbreaker for the extra 30 percent part damage, silkbind and charged attacks that do not bounce, and traps to hold it still. The Fey Wyvern Gem is 5 percent from any of six monsters, 17 or 18 from a gold investigation, and 100 percent from the Colorful Carnival quest, with a 1 percent chance of a second. That last line makes the quest the only guaranteed gem farm in the folder.

Two more Master Rank items are not quite gathered. Melding Pudding first arrives from Nagi during the Master Rank story, and afterwards from the Backroom Deals on the Argosy's Trade Requests tab, a Letter of Introduction on a submarine, or a locked treasure chest. The Monksnail is not collected at all. Flur at the Elgado docks wants a photograph, and the page's method is to start a Frost Islands expedition at night so that you are standing on the wrecked ship near the north-east sub-camp, looking east past the map's edge, when day breaks and the snail surfaces. The reward is a hat.

What your buddies fetch, Master Rank 2 to 4

Six items on the ladder are collected by Palicoes and Palamutes while you are elsewhere, and they arrive in order of rank. At Master Rank 2 the Argosy opens from your Elgado room and the Large Armored Bream becomes possible as a bonus item on Icebarb Bazaar trades. The page is emphatic that fishing will never produce one, and that the levers are more submarines, more buddies, and the Blinding and Shiny Bargain skills. At Master Rank 3 the Mushroom Market adds the Prairie Cricket as a bonus in the same way, and at Master Rank 4 the Citadel's sparkling bonepiles open to Meowcenaries and yield Grooved Bones.

The two Meowcenaries cloth-and-cap items unlock the secret armor sets our secret armor sets page catalogues. Sinister Gloomcloth from the Sandy Plains builds Death Stench X, which needs five pieces of cloth for the full set and carries Defensive Polish, Speed Sharpening and Assault Boost among its skills. The Nohsic Snuff Cap from the Jungle builds the Five Element set. Grooved Bones build the Snowshear set. Those three sets, plus the bream's Vaik X, mean four of the fourteen secret sets in Sunbreak sit behind items on this page, and every one of them is fetched by a cat.

Royal Order weapons: the follower-quest ladder

The Royal Order weapons page is really nine unlock recipes, and laying them out shows how the line is priced. Every weapon needs five Eltalite Ore and one Royal Order Certificate, grade I at Master Rank 2 and 3 and grade II at Master Rank 4, and the zenny climbs in four steps.

WeaponFollower and questRankZennyMonster part

Forging all nine costs 282,000 zenny and 45 Eltalite Ore, figures the page never totals. Two of the recipes reach back into this guide: the Sword wants three Awegite and the Guard wants three Goldlite Ore, so the Master Rank 1 mining loop above is also the first step toward the Royal Order line. Three of the quests have a prerequisite quest of their own, Keep it Busy, which gates the Glaive, Bludgeon and Battle Axe, and the Battle Axe also needs White Knight vs New Knight cleared first.

The numbers the pages give

Four pages quote a sell price, and the order is not the order of effort. The Prairie Cricket sells for 2,600 zenny and is fetched by a buddy. Goldlite Ore sells for 1,260 and Awegite for 1,200, both mined by hand. The Eroded Elder Skeleton sells for 670 and is the only one of the four our page bothers to give a rarity for, at 8. If you are selling for zenny, the cricket is the one to let the Argosy accumulate.

Five pages quote a drop rate, and they span a wide range. The Barroth Crown's 70 percent head carve is the highest, the Prized Pelt's 30 from Kelbi next, then 20 for the herbivore bone, and the Fey Wyvern Gem's 5 percent carve is the lowest, which is why its guaranteed quest matters. A sixth rate lives on our Palamute Silkbinder page: the Steel Gajau Whisker that quest needs is a 20 percent carve that can only be taken once per Gajau.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get upgrade materials in Master Rank?

Start an expedition with the Master Rank difficulty set, not a High Rank one. Every gathering page in this guide makes the same point: the nodes for Awegite, Goldlite, the stiffbones and the skeletons only spawn on a Master Rank map, and Kelbi, Slagtoth and Rhenoplos only carve their Sunbreak materials there.

Which items does the hunter never gather?

Large Armored Bream, Prairie Cricket, Grooved Bones, Sinister Gloomcloth and Nohsic Snuff Cap all come back with your buddies from the Argosy or the Meowcenaries. Melding Pudding can as well once Backroom Deals are open. If you have been fishing for the bream, stop.

What raises gathering yields?

Three skills and one dango, according to our pages. Geologist 3 adds an extra gather at mining and bone nodes, Botanist does the same for plants while you wait for piles to respawn, and Partbreaker adds 30 percent to part damage for crown-style breaks. The Dragonbone Artifact page recommends the Raisin d'etre, Bee-utiful and Call-of-the-Wild dangos for faster respawns and better spawns, and a gathering Palico for a second harvest.

What do these items build?

Mostly the X-rank armor and the early Master Rank weapons that carry you to the endgame, plus four of Sunbreak's secret sets. For the weapons those materials feed, see the weapons guide; for the monsters that drop the carved ones, the monsters guide; and for the Master Rank progression that gates all of it, the mechanics guide or the Monster Hunter Rise hub.
