Best GTA San Andreas Mods: The Fixes To Install First, Graphics After
San Andreas has been modded for twenty years, and the lists that circulate are mostly screenshots of what somebody's game looks like. The order matters far more than the shopping does. Install the loaders and the bug fixes first, confirm the game still starts, and only then add the things that change how it looks. Almost every broken San Andreas install is a graphics pack dropped onto an unpatched game.
Step One: The Loaders
Nothing else works without these, and they are the part people skip.
| Mod | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Silent's ASI Loader | Loads .asi plugins, which is what most serious mods are |
| Mod Loader | Lets mods live in their own folders instead of overwriting game files, so anything can be removed cleanly |
| CLEO | Runs CLEO script mods, the format most gameplay mods ship in |
| Open Limit Adjuster | Raises the engine's internal limits, which several large mods require before they will load |
Mod Loader is the one that saves the most grief later. With it, a mod that breaks the game is deleted by removing a folder rather than by reinstalling San Andreas.
Step Two: The Fixes
| Mod | What it fixes |
|---|---|
| SilentPatch | Hundreds of bugs and coding errors left in the PC version, from broken shadows to crashes |
| Widescreen Fix | Makes the game render properly on modern displays instead of stretching |
| Framerate Vigilante | Caps the frame rate at 60 and cures the physics bugs that appear above it |
| Proper Fixes | Corrects wrong textures and lighting errors the patches above leave behind |
The frame rate cap is worth understanding rather than just installing. San Andreas ties parts of its physics to frame rate, so an uncapped modern PC produces genuinely different behaviour, which is why cars handle strangely on a fresh install. This is a fix, not a preference.
Step Three: How It Looks
| Mod | What it changes |
|---|---|
| SkyGfx | Restores the PlayStation 2 look: the warmer palette, the hazy Los Santos sky and the original bloom |
| Project2DFX | Extends draw distance and lights up the skyline at night, which is the single biggest visual change on this page |
| RoSA Project | Remasters the game's textures in high resolution |
| Real Skybox | New sky, clouds and stars without a frame rate cost |
| HQ Palms and Wind Project | Better trees, and models that move in the wind |
SkyGfx and a texture pack pull in opposite directions, one restoring the original console look and the other replacing the art with sharper versions, so pick the direction you actually want before installing both and wondering why the game looks confused.
Worth Adding Afterwards
GInput fixes controller support properly, with rumble and analogue sensitivity, which the stock PC version handles badly. ImVehFt adds working indicators and vehicle detail. More Radar Icons puts hospitals, fire stations and casinos on the map, which saves a surprising amount of driving. A first person mod exists and is the closest this game gets to feeling like a modern one.
None of this touches the console or mobile versions, which cannot be modded in any supported way. On those platforms the equivalent is the cheat list, and our cheats page covers the PlayStation and Xbox button combinations as well as the typed PC codes.
A Note On Which Version You Own
Most of the mods above target the original PC release, not the Definitive Edition, which is a different build with a different engine underneath. The Definitive Edition's own quirks, including the cheats that no longer work, are covered on our cheats, gyms and safehouses guide. If the aim is the best looking San Andreas, the older PC version with the fixes on this page is still the version the modding scene is built around.
Modding Questions
What is the first mod to install for San Andreas?
SilentPatch, followed by the widescreen fix and a frame rate cap. Those three make the game behave correctly before anything is added to it.
Do mods disable achievements?
The original PC release has none to disable. On the Definitive Edition it is cheats rather than mods that cost you the trophies, and our cheats page covers that.
Can you mod San Andreas on mobile or console?
Not in any supported way. Those versions get the cheat codes instead, and everything else this folder covers is mapped city by city on our San Andreas hub.
