God of War Valkyrie Locations: All Nine Chambers And Reaching Sigrun
Eight Valkyries are sealed behind doors scattered across the realms, and the ninth is their queen, who does not appear until you have beaten every one of the others and carried their helmets home. They are the hardest fights in God of War, and they are also among the best paying detours in it: each one hands over an enchantment nothing else in the game will ever give you again, plus the steel that Valkyrie armor is made of.
All Nine Valkyrie Locations
| Valkyrie | Realm | Where the chamber is | The enchantment she leaves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gunnr | Midgard | Thamur's Corpse, a short way past the docks, beside the dead giant's hand | Feathers of the Fallen Servant, which raises sprinting speed for good |
| Kara | Midgard | River Pass, inside the Witch's Cave | Heart of Midgard, which adds 6 percent to bare handed damage, up to 18 |
| Geirdriful | Midgard | The Foothills, behind a door sealed by the Winds of Hel on the path up from Sindri's camp | Heart of Vanaheim, whose Fortune's Strike can grant Runic, Strength or Defense on any hit |
| Eir | Midgard | The Mountain, in the hall where the cart ride up begins, off to the right of the gate | Eye of the Winged Chosen, which lengthens and speeds up every evade |
| Olrun | Alfheim | A cave on the south western shore of the great lake, in a Hidden Chamber of Odin | Ivaldi's Corrupted Mind, an aura that weakens everything within 15 metres |
| Rota | Helheim | Behind the red sap wall, reachable once Atreus has Shock Arrows | Asgard's Shard of Existence, which turns a long block into an explosive knockback |
| Gondul | Muspelheim | The final arena at the summit, opened by clearing the realm's trials | Leviathan's Eye, worth 6 percent on every axe throw, maxing at 18 |
| Hildr | Niflheim | Ivaldi's Workshop, deep in the cursed mist and gated behind the Niflheim ciphers | Heart of the Valkyrie, 50 percent resistance to every status effect when it fires |
| Sigrun | Midgard | The Council of Valkyries, north of the Lake of Nine, and only after the other eight | Njord's Temporal Stone |
Every one of those nine enchantments is a single find. Our enchantments and materials guide sorts all 55 unique enchantments by one question, whether the thing that gave it will ever give another, and the Valkyrie row is the largest block on the no side: nine drops, nine fights, no second chances. That is the argument for slotting them rather than dismantling them for Enchanted Dust.
What Else Each Fight Pays
Beyond the enchantment, every Valkyrie drops her helmet, which is the key to the queen, and a piece of gear. Our own accounting puts the waist armor on Olrun, the chest piece on Hildr, the wrist armor on Gondul, an axe hilt on Geirdriful, an axe pommel on Eir, a blades pommel on Rota and a talisman on Kara. Gunnr, the one our older guide calls the easiest to beat, gives the least.
They also pay in materials. Each fight yields Asgardian Steel, with Perfect Asgardian Steel from the higher level ones, and that steel is what Valkyrie armor, pommels and talismans are built from, which our armor ranking puts at the top of the list. It is the clearest example in the game of a fight that pays in two currencies at once, and neither of them repeats.
Reaching Sigrun
The Council of Valkyries sits on its own island north of the Lake of Nine and holds nine thrones. Eight of them need a helmet, and you place each one as you collect it; when the last goes down, Sigrun wakes. She is not a new fight so much as all eight of the others at once, because her moveset is assembled from theirs, so the practical preparation is to fight the other eight in an order that teaches you their patterns rather than in whatever order you find the doors.
How To Prepare
Three things in our own pages matter more here than anywhere else in the game. The first is Protection Against the Fallen, an enchantment that cuts Valkyrie damage by 5 percent and maxes at 15; it comes from Valkyrie's Bane, which a Hel-Traveler drops near Thamur's Corpse, and it is the only perk in the game written specifically against these fights. The second is the Stun Meter our enemies and upgrades guide describes: it fills fastest under Atreus's arrows, and against a Valkyrie the R3 execution it enables takes off health no combo of yours will reach. The third is simply armor upgrades, because a Valkyrie punishes a Kratos built for damage.
What Each One Actually Does
Gunnr cycles a short set of moves and is the gentle introduction. Kara summons Draugr and fights at range, so the adds are the real problem. Geirdriful moves far more than either and mixes projectiles with an unblockable scythe charge. Eir blocks well and swings a mace, and her Mace Wave can end a run at full health, so it is the one attack you learn before anything else.
Olrun dashes constantly and mixes her attacks fast enough that reading her is the whole fight. Rota does enormous damage up close and switches between mace and scythe mid combat. Gondul adds meteors to everything the others do. Hildr blocks, throws ice and uses a scythe, and she is fought at the end of the Niflheim maze rather than at the start of a fresh visit. Sigrun draws on all eight, which is why her fight is the one that decides whether the other eight taught you anything.
Valkyrie Questions
How many Valkyries are in God of War?
Nine. Eight are sealed in chambers across Midgard, Alfheim, Helheim, Muspelheim and Niflheim, and Sigrun, the queen, appears at the Council of Valkyries once all eight helmets are on their thrones.
Which Valkyrie should you fight first?
Gunnr at Thamur's Corpse, on our own older guide's reckoning that she has the smallest set of attacks to learn. Kara in the Witch's Cave is the other early option, though her summoned Draugr make her less of a clean lesson.
Do you need to beat the Valkyries to finish the game?
No. Every one of them is optional, which is why they sit outside the chapter order on our God of War walkthrough. They are endgame content in practice, and the God of War hub treats them as the last thing a Power Level is measured against.
