God of War Best Armor: The Sets Worth Crafting and What Decides A Set

Kratos wears three pieces of armor, one at the chest, one at the wrists and one at the waist, while Atreus wears a single piece. Every piece can be upgraded at Brok or Sindri's shop, every upgrade raises its stats and can add another enchantment socket, and a piece holds three sockets at most. That last detail is why a ranking of sets is only half the answer: a mid tier set with three filled sockets frequently beats a famous one with one, and the pages that fill those sockets are the other half of this guide.

The Sets Worth Wearing

4ZeusNew Game Plus, behind Valkyrie fightsBalanced, with a perk that trades safety for damage

6Smoldering BrimstoneMuspelheim and Niflheim materialsStrength, Defense and Vitality, with a fire aura
7Blazing MagmaThe same two realms' materialsCooldown, for a Runic heavy Kratos
8Ivaldi's Deadly MistNiflheim materials, after three of Ivaldi's favorsBalanced stats with health regeneration on every piece

The materials column matters as much as the ranking, because several of these sets are gated behind realms you may not have opened. Our enchantments and materials guide sorts all 44 crafting materials by whether their source ever pays twice, and the armor materials fall almost entirely into the repeatable column: Svartalfheim Steel from coffins and large enemies, Traveler and Ancient parts from those enemy families, Mist Echoes and Haze Weave from Niflheim chests, Embers and Crests from the Muspelheim trials. Valkyrie steel is the exception, since each Valkyrie gives one and then never again.

Where Our Sources Disagree

Two of the rows above are genuinely contested, so they are worth flagging rather than smoothing over. The Traveler set sits last on our own ranking, which treats it as an early defensive option you outgrow, while other guides put it in their top tier on the strength of an upgraded perk that negates an enemy hit outright. Both readings are defensible and they are about different stages of a run.

The Valkyrie set is the second. Our ranking describes it as New Game Plus gear earned by beating three Valkyries, while other guides say the set comes from Hildr in Niflheim on a first playthrough. What is not in dispute is the material: the steel comes off Valkyries either way, so the route to it is the Valkyrie locations guide whichever account you follow.

The New Game Plus Sets

Four of the top four are New Game Plus gear, which is the honest shape of this list: God of War saves its best armor for a second run. Cod of War is the outlier because it is available the moment New Game Plus starts rather than at the end of it, so it carries a fresh Kratos through the early chapters at a level the first playthrough never offers. Ares and Zeus are the specialist picks, one built around Luck and Cooldown and the other around trading defence for damage.

If you are still on a first playthrough, the practical ceiling is the Niflheim and Muspelheim gear, and the practical floor is whatever you can keep upgrading. Both of those realms are repeatable sources, so the set you can farm beats the set you cannot reach.

Sockets Decide More Than The Set Does

A piece with three sockets and three good enchantments outperforms a higher tier piece with one, and our enemies and upgrades guide explains why: a number of skill bonuses stay dormant until a stat clears a line, which is Cooldown at 125, Runic at 250, Vitality at 225 and Defense at 300, and enchantments are the cheapest way to cross those lines. Pick the set that gets you closest to the threshold your build needs, then fill the sockets to clear it.

The enchantments to look for are in our items guide, including the nine that only ever drop from Valkyries and the ten Fiery and Frozen Shards the shops sell for Hacksilver. Generated enchantments from the Huldra shops cost both Hacksilver and Enchanted Dust, up to 15,000 and 250 Dust for an Epic, which makes rerolling an expensive way to fill a third socket.

Atreus's Armor

Atreus has one piece and it is usually an afterthought, which is a mistake in a game where his arrows fill the Stun Meter faster than anything Kratos does. The Legendary Sharpshooter Garb shortens his arrow recharge and adds damage to the last arrow of a volley; the Legendary Runic Vestment leans the other way, raising his arrow damage for eight seconds after a Runic Summon and dropping healthstones more often. Pick the first if you use him to keep pressure on, the second if you use his summons.

Armor Questions

What is the best armor in God of War?

The Valkyrie set, because it is the only one that raises every combat stat including Runic and Cooldown rather than trading one for another. Cod of War is the best set you can have early, since New Game Plus hands it over immediately.

How many enchantment slots does armor have?

Three at most per piece, and upgrading a piece at a shop is what adds them. That gives a fully upgraded Kratos nine sockets across chest, wrists and waist.

Should you upgrade old armor or save for a new set?

Upgrade, as long as the materials repeat. Steel, scales, Mist Echoes and Muspelheim Embers all come back, so spending them is reversible in a way that spending a Valkyrie's steel or a treasure map material is not. Our God of War hub arranges the whole folder around that same Power Level question.
