Fallout New Vegas Console Commands and Cheats: Item IDs and Perk IDs
The PC version of Fallout New Vegas ships with the same developer console as Fallout 3, and the Fallout New Vegas console commands below do everything from switching on god mode to dropping a Ranger Sequoia into your inventory. The console is not available on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. This page lists the commands by what they act on, then the form IDs you need for the two commands people actually use most, player.additem and player.addperk, drawn from the Independent Fallout Wiki's command and item pages and Game8's ID tables.
Two of our other pages sit beside this one. The tweaks page covers the INI settings the console cannot reach, such as field of view, mouse acceleration and the cell buffers, and the best mods page explains how the JIP LN NVSE plugin lets you use the console without the achievement penalty described next.
How to Open the Console
Press the tilde key, the one marked ~ or ` directly under Escape on a US keyboard; other layouts map it to whichever key sits in that spot. A text field appears in the lower left of the screen. Type the command, press Enter, and press the tilde key again to close it. Where a command below shows something in square brackets, replace the brackets and their contents with the value you want: player.additem [form ID] [quantity] becomes player.additem 00015169 5 for five stimpaks.
On the Steam version, using a command disables achievements for that session. Opening the console does not; only executing a command does, and quitting and relaunching the game switches achievements back on. Save before you experiment. A few commands, resurrect and disable on quest characters in particular, can break quests in ways a later save will not undo.
Toggle Commands
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
| tgm | God mode: no damage, no ammunition use, no weight limit. Type again to turn it off. |
| tcl | Collision off, so you walk through walls and float. Useful for a character stuck in geometry. |
| tfc | Free camera for screenshots, detached from your character. |
| tm | Hides every menu and the HUD, including the console text itself; type it blind to bring them back. |
| tmm 1 | Reveals every map marker. tmm 0 hides them again. |
| tai | Turns off AI, so characters stand still. |
| tcai | Turns off combat AI only; enemies still move but do not fight. |
| tdetect | Turns off detection, so nobody notices you. |
| tdt | Debug text overlay with frame rate and cell data. |
| tlb, tmb, tg | Toggle lighting, motion blur and grass, mostly for performance testing. |
Player Commands
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
| player.setlevel [number] | Sets your level directly. It does not hand out the skill points and perks the levels would have paid. |
| player.rewardxp [number] | Adds experience, which levels you up the normal way with the points and perk picks intact. |
| player.modav [value] [amount] | Adds or subtracts from an attribute or skill, for example player.modav strength 2. Use a negative number to lower it. |
| player.setav [value] [amount] | Sets an attribute or skill to an exact figure. |
| player.forceav [value] [amount] | Forces a value, overriding whatever the game calculated. |
| player.additem [form ID] [quantity] | Puts items in your inventory. The ID tables below are for this. |
| player.addperk [form ID] | Grants a perk. player.removeperk [form ID] takes it away. |
| player.placeatme [form ID] [quantity] | Spawns an object or character next to you. |
| player.setscale [number] | Resizes your character; 1 is normal. |
| player.setav speedmult [number] | Movement speed as a percentage; 100 is normal. |
| set timescale to [number] | How fast game time passes relative to real time; lower numbers slow the clock. |
| sgtm [number] | Game speed multiplier; 1 is normal, 0.5 is slow motion. |
| showracemenu, showbarbermenu, sexchange | Reopen character creation, reopen only the hair menu, or switch sex. |
| player.moveto [reference ID] | Teleports you to a character or object. moveto player does the reverse for a selected target. |
| coc [cell name] | Teleports you to a named interior cell. |
The values modav and setav understand are the seven attributes by name (strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility, luck) and the thirteen skills as the game spells them: barter, energyweapons, explosives, guns, lockpick, medicine, meleeweapons, repair, science, sneak, speech, survival and unarmed, written as one word. The attributes and skills themselves, and what each one feeds, are on our attributes and skills page.
Targeted, Quest and Faction Commands
Targeted commands act on whatever you click with the console open; the reference ID appears at the top of the screen when you have selected something. prid [reference ID] selects a target you cannot click.
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
| kill | Kills the selected character. killall kills everyone in the current cell, allies included. |
| resurrect | Brings the selected corpse back. Do not use it on essential quest characters mid-quest. |
| disable and enable | Removes the selected object from the world, or restores it. |
| unlock and lock | Opens the selected door, container or terminal, or locks it again. |
| setessential [form ID] [1 or 0] | Makes a character unkillable, or removes that protection. |
| setownership | Makes the selected item or container yours, so taking from it is not theft. |
| setscale [number] | Resizes the selected character or object. |
| setstage [quest ID] [stage] | Moves a quest to a stage. getstage [quest ID] shows where it is now. |
| completequest and resetquest [quest ID] | Finishes a quest outright, or resets it to the start. |
| caqs | Completes every stage of every quest in the game. It ends the game in one keystroke; use it on a throwaway save. |
| movetoqt | Teleports you to the current quest target. |
| showquestlog | Prints the quest log to the console. |
| addreputation and removereputation [faction ID] [type] [amount] | Adjusts fame or infamy with a faction; the faction IDs are on the wiki's reputation page. |
| setgs [setting] [value] | Changes a game setting for the session, such as setgs fJumpHeightMin 120 for a higher jump. |
| fw [weather ID] | Forces a weather type. |
| enableplayercontrols | Restores control if a scripted scene leaves you frozen. |

DLC Item IDs
Every ID above starts with 00 because the base game is the first file the engine loads. Add-on items start with the position of that add-on in your load order instead, so the same Holorifle is 01 something on one machine and 03 something on another. Wikis write these as xx followed by the last six digits; replace the xx with the two-digit number of the DLC in your load order, which you can read off the Data Files list in the launcher or from your mod manager. The six add-ons and what each contains are on our DLC guide.
Worked Examples
- player.additem 0000000F 10000 gives 10,000 caps.
- player.additem 00140A68 5 gives five weapon repair kits; player.additem 000CB05C 3 gives three doctor's bags.
- player.modav guns 25 adds 25 points to Guns; player.setav luck 10 sets Luck to its ceiling.
- player.addperk 00031DBB grants Better Criticals whether or not you meet its level or requirements.
- player.additem 00034041 1 gives a Nikola Tesla and You to read, with the same permanent Energy Weapons gain as finding one.
- tgm followed by tcl gets a character out of almost any stuck spot; type both again afterwards.
If the game misbehaves rather than the character, the fixes belong elsewhere: launch-week crashes and freezes are on our troubleshooting page, and the modern engine fixes that replace most of them are the first section of our best mods page.
