Items
Assassin's Creed Valhalla marks its loot with a gold icon and then declines to say what is inside. Every one of them looks the same on the map, which is why a full region can feel like two hours of climbing towers for a pile of scrap. It is not scrap, but it is also not what most people expect, and the difference matters enough to plan around.
Wealth in this game is four separate things wearing one icon: an Ingot, a piece of Gear, a Cargo crate, or an Ability. This guide sorts the whole items bucket by which of the four you are looking at and, more usefully, by what happens to it after you pick it up. One of the four is gone forever the moment you use it. One of them is the reason you are picking up anything at all.
What is actually in the chests
Eight of our region guides label every single Wealth chest by type. Counting them gives a sample of 142 chests, which is large enough to be worth trusting.
| What is inside | Chests | Share | What happens to it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ingot | 73 | a little over half | Spent at the blacksmith, gone |
| Gear | 33 | just under a quarter | Kept, upgraded, eventually replaced |
| Cargo | 21 | about one in seven | Spent on the settlement, and renewable by raiding |
| Ability | 14 | one in ten | Permanent, and there is only one of each |
Read that top to bottom and the game's economy falls out of it. The thing you find most of is the thing you destroy. Over half of every gold icon in England is an ingot whose only purpose is to be handed to Gunnar and consumed, and you will need a great many of them because upgrading is per piece and per level.
The thing you find least of is the only thing that lasts. Fourteen chests in that sample of 142 held a Book of Knowledge, and each Book is a distinct ability that exists exactly once in the world. Harpoon Impalement, Raven Distraction, Piercing Shot, Focus of the Nornir and the rest are not drops, they are one-offs. If you are going to skip icons, skip ingots in a region you have already outgrown. Never skip an ability.
Cargo is the odd one because it is the only category the game will give you again. Cargo crates feed the settlement's supplies pool, and raiding produces the same resource on demand, so a cargo icon is worth exactly as much as the time it takes to walk to it. Note how lopsided that distribution can get: our Hamtunscire guide finds ten cargo chests in one region, while Glowecestrescire, Lincolnscire, Lunden and Rygjafylke have almost none between them.
The ingot ladder
Ingots come in three grades and they are gated by where you are, not by luck. Carbon ingots are the Norway and early England currency, and the Deserted Chalet Key is a good example of the effort a single one can cost: a whole chain of journal notes and a wolf hunt for one chest.
Nickel ingots arrive with the mid-game and our page organises them by the power level of the region holding them: Lunden and Oxenefordscire at 90, Sciropescire and Cent at 130. Tungsten is described as the rarest resource in the game and appears only in regions at power level 90 and above, ten of them in Eurvicscire, five in Jorvik, five in Wincestre and more in Glowecestrescire. It also has two sources that are not chests at all: trading fish at the Fishing Hut and hunting.
That is the practical reason to read the region guides in power-level order rather than story order. Ingots are the bottleneck on every build in the game, and the grade you need is decided by the region you are standing in.
Gear, and the three animals
Every weapon and every armour piece in Valhalla belongs to one of three families, and they line up exactly with the three ways you can play. Bear is melee, Wolf is ranged, Raven is stealth. Our armor guide makes the same split for sets, our weapons guide tags every entry with its aligned tree, and the region pages carry the tag right there in the chest listing, so a Ledecestrescire chest is not just "gear", it is "Huntsman Helm, Superior Helmet, Wolf Gear".
Alignment is about the skill tree the item scales with rather than the shape of the weapon, which is why a Raven-aligned war hammer is not a contradiction. The quality word next to it is the other half of the label: fine, then superior, then flawless. A flawless base is worth more of your ingots than a superior one, so check the word before you spend.
Full sets are worth chasing because the set bonus only fires when every piece is equipped. The Thor's gear set is the longest chain in the game: three daggers from the Daughters of Lerion, then the Helmet, then the Cloak, and Mjolnir only after the story is finished and only if the set is complete. The gear locations page is the flat index of everything else, and the two expansions add their own: Celtic Armor across Meath, Aileach and Connacht, and the Wrath of the Druids weapons. Two single pieces sit outside all of that: Skadi's Blade, which came from a Ubisoft Connect challenge rather than the world, and the River Raid Books of Knowledge, three abilities that only exist in the River Raids mode.
The region index
Fifteen regions have a collectibles guide, each covering Wealth, Mysteries and Artifacts. Where a page states its own totals they add up: Ledecestrescire claims 57 collectibles and lists 28 Wealth, 16 Mysteries and 13 Artifacts, and Hamtunscire claims 8 artifacts, 14 mysteries and 23 wealth.
| Region | Notes |
|---|---|
| Rygjafylke | Norway, where the carbon ingots are |
| Hordafylke | Norway, small list, home to a power level 370 duel |
| Ledecestrescire | The largest single list we cover, 57 collectibles |
| Grantebridgescire | Power level 90 |
| Lunden | Power level 90, an even four ingots and four gear |
| Oxenefordscire | Power level 90, artifacts listed before wealth |
| Essexe | Eleven ingots, the densest ingot run in the sample |
| Glowecestrescire | Nine ingots, no cargo at all |
| Sciropescire | Also holds the Mastery Challenge shrine |
| Lincolnscire | Power level 160, 18 wealth chests |
| Hamtunscire | Ten cargo crates, more than anywhere else |
| Wincestre | Ten wealth locations, five of them tungsten |
| Wincestere | A second, wealth-only pass over the same region |
| Asgard | Mythological, wealth and mysteries only, no artifacts |
| Jotunheim | Mythological, the longest wealth list of the two |
| Vinland | Mysteries outnumber wealth here, which is unusual |
Two things to know about that table. Wincestre appears twice because we have two separate guides to the same region under two spellings; both independently arrive at ten wealth locations, which is a reassuring cross-check rather than an error. And the three mythological regions behave differently from England: Asgard, Jotunheim and Vinland list no artifacts at all, because the artifact icon is an England thing.
The collections that are not wealth
A second set of pages covers things that use their own icon and pay in something other than gear. These are the completionist tracks, and their value is a trophy or a cosmetic rather than a stat.
| Collection | How many | What it pays |
|---|---|---|
| Cursed Symbols | 40 | Dreamcatcher at 10, and they clear the poison fog |
| Evresin Opals | 39 | Reda's cosmetics, and they cannot be bought or sold |
| Animus Anomalies | 8 | A video fragment and the Hidden Truth trophy |
| Codex Pages | 6 | The Hidden Ones armour set |
| Standing Stones | Region by region | Nothing but the alignment puzzle itself |
| Orlog God Favors | Region by region | Cards for the dice game |
| Fish | Ongoing | Runes, crafting materials, tattoo designs and tungsten |
Opals are the strangest of these because they are a currency you cannot trade for or sell, only find, which makes 39 of them in a single expansion region a real time investment. Codex Pages are the opposite: six pages, one armour set, and every one of them sits in a Hidden Ones Bureau you were going to visit anyway.
The one-item pages
The last handful are single objects with a guide each, and they exist because each one is a lock with a puzzle in front of it. The Offchurch Key is on an enemy at the bottom of a crypt you can only enter during Tilting the Balance. Maximilian's Key costs 65 silver paid to a child to distract its owner. Bil's Comb is at the bottom of a lake and pays 1,200 XP plus a romance. Reindeer Antlers wants three of them for A Mild Hunt, tracked with your raven around Fornburg.
None of those is a large reward. They are here because a locked door with no visible key is the single most common reason people stop and search for a guide, and in every case the answer is a specific person or a specific dive rather than anything you could reason out from the map.
