Items
Almost every guide to Odyssey's legendary gear sorts it by weapon shape: swords, then daggers, then heavy blunts, then spears, then bows. That is the one thing you already know before you go looking. What you actually need to know is how a given item reaches you, because that is what decides whether you can have it this afternoon or only after the credits roll.
So this page sorts everything by acquisition channel, running from the most reliable and free to the least reliable and most expensive. Channel one is walk there and open a chest. Channel six is spend real money. Armor and weapons are treated together throughout, because in Odyssey the same chest, the same cultist and the same cult branch hand you both, and splitting them makes you plan the same route twice.
Two facts reorder most people's plans and neither is stated on the pages that rank for this. First, item level is set when you pick the item up, not when it was placed, so there is no such thing as opening a legendary chest too early and nothing you loot is ever wasted. Second, a legendary weapon's real payoff is often the engraving it permanently adds to your pool, which you can then stamp onto gear you actually want to wear. That means weapons you will never equip are still worth hunting.
How legendary gear actually reaches you
There are six channels and they are not equally trustworthy. Fixed chests are guaranteed and unmissable, and there are 17 of them. Mythical hunts are fixed encounters with fixed rewards. Cultist kills are the largest single source but are gated behind identity reveals and, in a few cases, the main story. Quest rewards arrive on the story's schedule and one of them is ending-dependent. Mercenary drops come from randomly spawning named enemies, though you can force the spawn. And the shops split into an earnable currency and a real-money one, which most guides list side by side as if they were the same thing.
Everything below is the channel view. If you would rather look an individual item up by name, our legendary weapons guide covers all 38 weapons with their perks, and our legendary armor guide covers the 23 pieces slot by slot along with every set bonus.
Channel 1: the 17 fixed chests
There are 17 Legendary Chests in Greece, 12 on the mainland and 5 on the islands. Each holds exactly one piece, either a legendary weapon or a piece of legendary armor, and no quest is required to reach any of them. On the map they show as a blue marker, and in the world the chest itself is golden with two lions on either side and two more howling on the lid.
This is the channel to clear first and clear early, precisely because of the level-scaling rule. The only real gate is that five of them are on islands and need a ship, and swimming out instead means meeting predators that will one-shot a low-level character. Two of the 17 hold ship customisations rather than gear, and five hold the complete Pilgrim Set. Full route directions for all 17 are on our legendary chests guide.
| # | What is inside | Type | Where | Ship? |

| 5 | Herakles’s Mace | Heavy blunt | Arkadia, Temple of Demeter west of the Athena Polias viewpoint, inside in the open area | No |
| 6 | Pilgrim’s Gloves | Arms | Akropolis of Argos in Argolis, up the stairs then right | No |
| 7 | Hammer of Jason | Heavy blunt | Palace of Agamemnon south of Korinthia, ground floor, entered through holes in the roof | No |
| 8 | Agamemnon’s Gauntlet | Arms | Lavrio Silver Mine in southern Attika, at the top of the wooden scaffolding at the end | No |
| 9 | Pilgrim’s Hood | Head | Eleusis Telesterion north of Athens, in the chamber with two statues outside its door | No |

| 16 | Falx of Olympos | Spear | Underwater at the Palace of Amphitrite, northwest of Thera, at the bottom of the temple | Yes |
| 17 | Pilgrim’s Boot | Legs | Temple of Britomartis on Messara, western isles, northern side of the temple | Yes |
The four that need directions rather than a map pin
Most of the 17 are a fast travel and a short walk. Four are not. Chest 1, the Hound of Hades, is underwater off the tip of the eastern finger of the Spartan Peninsula, so the marker sits on open sea. Chest 4, Eros's Bow, is in the Andania Mines, which have two entrances: take the left one, go down, take the first right and keep descending until you reach a chamber, and the chest is in the southwestern part of it. Chest 11, Minotaur's Revenge, is the worst of them, requiring you to go upstream along a Makedonian river to an underwater cavern on the west bank, climb down, go straight and take the first left to a small pool. Chest 16, the Falx of Olympos, is underwater at the Palace of Amphitrite northwest of Thera, at the bottom of the temple.
Two of those four are worth the trouble for their contents alone. Poseidon's Trident from chest 14 grants unlimited underwater breathing, which makes every other underwater chest trivial, so take it early. The Falx of Olympos doubles your damage but caps your health at 25%, which is the most interesting single item in the game for an assassin build and a liability for anything else.
Channel 2: the mythical hunts and pelt turn-ins
Five fixed encounters each hand over one fixed weapon, so there is nothing random about this channel, only a level check. Two of them are pelt turn-ins rather than direct drops. Slay the Nemean Lion at the Sinkholes of Herakles in Argolis and return its pelt to the Daughters of Artemis for Pandora's Kopis, which gives +100% tamed beast damage and +50% tamed beast health. Slay the Kalydonian Boar and take that pelt to Daphnae for Artemis' Bow.
The other three are straight kills. Medusa in the Petrified Temple on Lesbos drops the Harpe of Perseus and its 25% cooldown reduction. The Minotaur at Knossos Palace in Messara drops Minotaur's Labrys, which cuts the adrenaline cost of Overpower by one. The Cyclops on the Forgotten Isle in Phokis drops the Polyphemos Cyclops Bludgeon and its +25% damage against elites and bosses. The fights themselves are covered in our walkthrough; this page is only about whether the reward justifies the detour.
Channel 3: cultist kills
This is the biggest single source of legendary gear in the game, and it is the only channel that pays twice. Individual cultists drop individual pieces, and clearing an entire cult branch completes an armor set with its own set bonus on top. If you are hunting gear efficiently, you should be clearing branches rather than picking off cultists at random.
| Cultist | Drops | Slot or type | Where to find them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoisme | Helmet of the Immortal | Head | Malis, at an alpha bear cave |
| The Master | Viper’s Hood | Head | Reached through the Citizenship Test quest in Greater Athens |
| Brison | Athenian War Hero Gauntlets | Arms | Salamis Marble Quarry, Attika. Locked until the main story is finished |
| Hermippos | Venom Gloves | Arms | Behind the Free Speech side quest, which needs the Attika side quests done first |
| Asterion | Pirates Gauntlets | Arms | Aboard his ship, marked with a golden crown, sailing between Skyros and Andros |
| The Snake | Scaled Torso | Torso | Killed during the main story |
| The Octopus | Pirate Armor | Torso | Roaming the sea around Thera and Anaphi |
| Okytos the Great | Waistband of Achilles | Waist | His location moves, so he has to be tracked |
| Sotera | Slithering Belt | Waist | Wandering inside the Fort of Megaris |
| The Chimera | Boots of Agamemnon | Legs | Southern edge of Andros, at the Beach Encampment |
| Harpalos | Boots of the Immortal | Legs | Keos Island, west of Delos |
| Midas | Noxious Boots | Legs | Argolis, in the streets of Argos. Available as soon as you have the Cultist List |
| The Mytilenian Shark | Pirate Treads | Legs | Aboard his own ship, south of Samos |
| The Hydra | Gorgoneion Xiphos | Sword | Sage of Gods of the Aegean Sea, roaming southwest of Messenia |
| Deimos | Sword of Damokles | Sword | Mt. Taygetos in Lakonia, after every branch is clear. Also completes the Demigod Set |
| Kleon the Everyman | Paris’ Bow | Bow | Sage of the Delian League, revealed by a main quest |
| Lokaste the Seer | Rod of Asklepios | Staff | Sage of Worshippers of the Bloodline, at the Anavatos Ruins on Chios |
| Polemion the Wise | Elysian Axe | Heavy blade | Sage of the Silver Vein, at the Teichos of Herakles Cult Stronghold in Achaia |
Which branch to clear first
Rank the branches by the set bonus they complete rather than by convenience. Worshippers of the Bloodline gives the Immortal Set, which restores 20% health on death on a two-minute cooldown, effectively a second life, and that is the strongest bonus in the game. Eyes of Kosmos gives the Snake Set and +10% intoxicated damage. Peloponnesian League gives Spartan War Hero and 15% extra Warrior ability damage. Heroes of the Cult gives the Achilles Set, which converts 2% of all damage dealt into health. Full rosters and clue chains are on our cultists guide and the hunt order is in our targets overview.
Channel 4: quest rewards, including the one you can lose
These arrive on the story's schedule, so they cannot be rushed, but they also cannot be missed by accident, with one exception. The Wolf Hunt gives Nikolaos' Sword and its +20% Sparta Kick damage whether you kill or spare him. Defeating Pausanias during the main questline gives Xiphos of Dionysos. The Let My Patients Go side quest gives Hermes' Kerukeion. Finishing The Final Battle or Nemesis gives Athena's Spear, worth +25% damage and health in conquest battles. The Atlantis quest Ancient Revelation gives the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus.
The exception is the Sword of Damokles from Deimos, which requires the main story to be finished and which our own coverage ties to how your playthrough ends. It is the single most conditional legendary in the game, so read our endings guide and our choices guide before the last act rather than after it.
Channel 5: named mercenary drops, and how to force them
Nine legendary items come off named mercenaries, and the problem with all of them is that mercenaries do not sit anywhere. They spawn in response to your bounty. The forcing trick is buried in a single paragraph of our weapons page and is worth pulling out: go into an area, kill cult soldiers until your bounty crosses a threshold, and the cult hires a mercenary to come after you. Do that repeatedly and you are effectively rolling for the named one you want.
| Look for this in the name | Drops | Slot or type | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Spark | Prometheus Sika | Sword | +15% fire damage and build-up. One of the best legendary DPS weapons in the game |
| The Smoldering | Mallet of Everlasting Flame | Heavy blunt | Adds fire damage to every attack |
| Exekias the Legend | Typhon’s Mace | Heavy blunt | Over +20% damage on charged heavy attacks. He is also a Cult sage, so this kill pays twice |
| The Patricidal | Griffin’s Scythe | Spear | Over +20% damage with Spread Shot |
| The Marksman | Achilles’ Bow | Bow | High DPS, deadliest when fired from height |
| Ashen Wake | Hades’ Bow | Bow | Shoots fire arrows |
| Atlanta | Atlanta Sandals | Legs | Warrior damage and elemental resistance |
| Any mercenary | Bracers of Theseus | Arms | Armor, Warrior damage and extra health. A random drop, not tied to a name |
| Any mercenary | Jason’s Golden Fleece | Torso | Warrior damage and increased total armor. Also a random drop |
| The Flash, the Frenzied, the Translucent, the Resplendent, the Lucky Drunk | Greek Hero Set | Full set | All five must die. The set gives +20% resistance to all damage |
The Greek Hero Set is the reason to take this channel seriously rather than treating mercenary drops as a bonus. It is five specific names, and our mercenaries guide covers how the ladder and the bounty meter work in detail.
Channel 6: what you can simply buy
Orichalcum at Sargon
Orichalcum Ore is an earnable currency spent at one vendor, Sargon at the Oikos of the Olympians. Epic items cost around 50 and legendary items usually around 80, and he also sells the Olympian Gift, which is a loot box and can hand you something you already own. His stock changes weekly, so the practical advice is to check in rather than to save up indefinitely.
There are two ways to farm it. Ore fragments spawn throughout the world including on Kephallonia, the starting island, and look like green stones with a blue mist coming off them, which makes them easy to spot once you know the silhouette. The more reliable route is Mercenary Works contracts from message boards, which pay a set amount scaled to difficulty rather than making you wander. Those contracts require you to be online, which is the catch nobody mentions. Our Orichalcum farming guide has the detail.
The Helix Store, and what it costs you
The rest of this channel is real money, and it is worth separating out because most lists print these items alongside earned gear as if they were equivalent. Several of them are not upgrades at all: four carry a stat penalty that our own coverage records and that the store does not advertise.
| Item | Cost | What it gives | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrysaor | 1500 Helix, in the Pegasos gear pack | +25% damage and +3% adrenaline per hit | Nothing beyond the price |
| Pegasus Set | 1000 Helix | +50% adrenaline when you dodge | Nothing beyond the price |
| Spartan Renegade Set | 1000 Helix | +50% critical hit chance with Warrior abilities | Nothing beyond the price |
| Drinker of Light | 250 Helix | +12% poison, +11% assassin damage, +50% elemental build-up | Nothing beyond the price |
| Olympian Torch | 250 Helix | Over +12% fire, +11% warrior damage, +50% elemental build-up | Nothing beyond the price |
| Hammer of Horns | 250 Helix | Increased warrior boost and elemental damage | −30% elemental resistance, which is punishing against fire |
| Swift Slayer | 250 Helix | Improved warrior abilities | −30% elemental resistance |
| The Greek Hello | 250 Helix | Increased crit and damage | −15% health while equipped |
| Vine Bow | 250 Helix | +9% damage at range, +11% hunter damage | −15% armor |
Armor sets and the channel that completes each one
A full set gives a bonus on top of the individual pieces, and because most sets map cleanly onto a single channel, the set you want tells you which channel to work. Seven of the fifteen are cult branch clears, which is the strongest argument for hunting the Cult systematically.
| Set | Channel | What completes it | Set bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pilgrim Set | 1, fixed chests | Chests 2, 6, 9, 10 and 17 | −40% adrenaline consumption on Shadow of Nyx |
| Immortal Set | 3, cultists | Worshippers of the Bloodline | 20% health restored on death, two-minute cooldown |
| Snake Set | 3, cultists | Eyes of Kosmos | +10% intoxicated damage and weakening effect |
| Spartan War Hero | 3, cultists | Peloponnesian League | 15% extra Warrior ability damage |
| Achilles Set | 3, cultists | Heroes of the Cult | 2% of all damage dealt converted into health |
| Agamemnon Set | 3, cultists | The Silver Vein | Enemies burn 50% faster |
| Athenian War Hero Set | 3, cultists | Delian League | All arrows gain shield-piercing damage |
| Pirate Set | 3, cultists | Gods of the Aegean Sea | Not stated in our coverage |
| Demigod Set | 3, cultists | Looting Deimos | +10% damage on all abilities |
| Artemis Set | 4, quests | All the Daughters of Artemis quests | +15% damage with Hunter abilities |
| Arena Fighter’s Set | 4, quests | Every Arena fight at every level | +10% health restored on each Overpower use |
| Greek Hero Set | 5, mercenaries | The Flash, the Frenzied, the Translucent, the Resplendent, the Lucky Drunk | +20% resistance to all damage |
| Master’s Artemis Set | Not stated | Our coverage does not record a source for this one | +15% damage with Hunter abilities |
| Pegasus Set | 6, Helix | 1000 Helix | +50% adrenaline when you dodge |
| Spartan Renegade Set | 6, Helix | 1000 Helix | +50% critical hit chance with Warrior abilities |
The engraving economy
This is the part that changes how you treat everything above. Engravings boost the stats of a weapon or a piece of armor, and while the Blacksmith sells a limited selection, the good ones have to be unlocked. Once unlocked, an engraving stays in your pool permanently and can be applied to any gear whose slot it fits. That is why a legendary weapon you will never equip is still worth hunting: you are farming the modifier, not the sword.
Unlocks come from three places. Reaching a player level, hitting a kill milestone, or solving one of the 15 Ainigmata Ostraka riddles. Our engravings guide lists all 43 with the slots each one fits.
The ones you unlock by playing
Level-gated engravings arrive on a predictable ladder, so they need no planning at all: Hunter damage at levels 2, 12 and 22, Assassin damage at 3, 13 and 23, Warrior damage at 4, 14 and 24, Health at 5, 15 and 25, Armor at 6, 16 and 26, Fire damage at 7, 17 and 27, Poison at 8 and 18, headshot damage at 9 and 19, critical hit chance at 10 and 20, and critical hit damage at 11 and 21.
The milestone ones are worth steering toward, because several are things you would otherwise never do. Killing a single Leader unlocks All Damage and ten Leaders upgrades it. One cultist kill halves damage taken and three cultists upgrades that. One mercenary kill boosts adrenaline on critical strikes and ten upgrades it. Fifty headshot eliminations, 100 sword kills, 25 archers, and five Bounties of War contracts all unlock their own. If you are already hunting cultists and mercenaries for gear, you are collecting these for free.
The ones the Ainigmata Ostraka unlock
There are 15 tablets, each a two-part puzzle: find the Ostraka, then go and inspect the thing its riddle describes. Our engravings page names the Ostraka source for some of these and leaves others as a bare "complete a particular Ainigmata Ostraka", so the table below is the join that closes those gaps. Six of the fifteen are in Attika, which makes the region the single most efficient stop. Full riddle solutions are on our Ainigmata Ostraka guide.
| Puzzle | Region | Where the tablet is | Where the answer is | Engraving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ashes to Ashes | Kephallonia | The barn on the east side of Markos’s Vineyard | A pile of junk in the ruined temple north of Kausos Village | +3% adrenaline per hit |

| A Specific General | Phokis | Below the large indoor statue in the Sanctuary of Athena | The flower basket at the feet of the general holding a sword and a spear | +1 second intoxicated |

Quick answers
How many legendary chests are there? 17, split 12 mainland and 5 island. Each holds one item and none of them needs a quest.
Can I open a chest too early? No. The item's level is set when you pick it up, so a chest opened at level 10 gives level 10 gear and the same chest opened at level 50 gives level 50 gear. Nothing is wasted by going early.
Do I have to keep a weapon to keep its engraving? No. Unlocking an engraving adds it to your pool permanently, and you can then apply it to different gear. That is why hunting weapons you will not use still pays.
Is Helix gear better than earned gear? Not reliably. Four of the store weapons carry a real penalty, from −30% elemental resistance on Hammer of Horns and Swift Slayer to −15% health on The Greek Hello and −15% armor on the Vine Bow.
What is the fastest route to a strong build? Clear the mainland chests for the Pilgrim Set and the free weapons, take Poseidon's Trident early so the underwater chests stop being a problem, then pick one cult branch and finish it for the set bonus.
