Zelda: Breath Of The Wild The Great Plateau
The Great Plateau is the first area in Legend Of Zelda BoTW from where Link begins his journey. While the game gives player freedom to do anything they want to do in the world, but to leave the Great Plateau Link is required to have the paraglider. To get the paraglider Link will have to complete some tasks.
The Great Plateau
Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild starts off with Link woken up by a voice in a desolate cave. Link wakes up in the Shrine of Resurrection.
Once you have the control over Link, wander around in the cave and go to a nearby pedestal to collect the Sheikah Slate. The Sheikah Slate will guide you towards your quest and will also open a nearby door so you can go outside.
In the next room, you will find a pair of treasure chests from which will grant you an Old Shirt and some Well-Worn Pants.
Move ahead and hold the Sheikah Slate up to the pedestal which will open the next door. Go through the door and climb up the rock to get outside and you will reach outside the Great Plateau.
After the game gives you an overview of the world, Link will see an Old Man in the distance walking towards a bonfire. From here on out you can go where ever you want in the world.
Now, make your way to the old man and speak with him. He will talk about the Great Plateau and how it is the birthplace of Hyrule. He direct Link towards a nearby temple.
after a while, the voice that woke up Link will speak again and will highlight a location on the map using the Sheikah Slate.
Go to the marked location and you will find a Bokoblin guarding the entry of the marked location. You can either fight him or just run past him.
Once inside, place your Sheikah Slate on the pedestal. Doing this will activate the Sheikah Towers across the map and will give Link a grander vision of the land.
Then Link will appear at the top of the Great Plateau Tower.
Make your way down from the Great Plateau Tower and be careful. Once you have descended the tower Link will be reunited with the Old Man.
The old man will give the backstory about Calamity Ganon the appeared almost 100 years ago and caused ruin and destruction of the land.
The old man notes that Link can’t leave the Great Plateau without a Paraglider. He offers to trade the Paraglider for acquiring a treasure from a secret Shrine that has appeared in the distance.
What are Shrines?
The Shrines in the game basically have two functions. When you get to a shrine and insert the Sheikah Slate on the pedestal, the Shrine will become a quick-warp location. Meaning, you’ll be able to travel to it whenever you want.
The other function of the Shrine is that you can go inside it and complete it. If you collect all the treasure chests inside a Shrine, it will show a treasure chest next to the Shrine’s name.
If you haven’t yet unlocked a Shrine, they will display as red in the world. If you’ve unlocked it but haven’t completed it yet, it’ll show up as blue with a red top.
Finally, if you complete a Shrine, it’ll display as blue
The Oman Au Shrine
There are four shrines on The Great Plateau which can be completed in any order you like. However, the Old man will direct Link towards the Oman Au Shrine in Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild. There are a number of ways to get to the shrine, so make your way to the shrine and place the Sheikah Slate into the pedestal to enter the Shrine.
If you got the DLC, you can find a purple chest next to the Shrine, containing a Ruby.
The Magnesis Trial
Inside the shrine, you will face the Magnesis Trial. Just go ahead and insert the Sheikah Slate into the pedestal to get a Magnesis Rune.
The rune will allow Link to interact with metallic objects. Use the Magnesis Rune to pick up the two large metallic rectangles on the ground floor revealing a pathway. Climb down and make your way towards the steps ahead.
Ahead you will find a large wall and you will notice that one block is different than the other rest of the blocks.
Again, use Magnesis Rune to pull out the block which will cause all of the other blocks to come tumbling down.
Ahead there will be a small Guardian Scout I that you’ll have to fight. Try not to stand still at one place for long as it will lock on Link and fire a beam at him. If you hide behind the boulder it is smart enough to find its way around.
Just keep moving and hit it whenever the opportunity presents itself and defeat it. You can also use the Magnesis Rune to control the block and push the enemy down into the water or smash it.
There’s a special trick you can use to defeat guardians, but it will need a ton of practice.
Basically, you can kill the guardian using its own beam. Stand still with your shield drawn and wait for the guardian to lock on to you.
As soon as it fires the beam at you, press A at the perfect time to swing your shield and send the beam right back to where it came from. This is a relatively difficult trick to do so don’t expect to nail it on the first try.
After defeating the Guardian there will be a metal plate on the ground that will serve as a bridge. So, use the Magnesis Rune to carry it over and use it as a bridge to go ahead.
To your left will be a treasure chest sitting on a platform above you. You can get it using your Magnesis Rune. This chest will contain a Traveler’s Bow.
Ahead there will be two massive metallic doors, so use the rune to open the doors and move ahead. Go ahead and tap on the wall to speak with the Monk Oman Au.
This monk is the one who set up the trail and he’ll reward you with a Spirit Orb for finishing his trial. You will find a monk at the end of every shrine to reward you.
Once Link has been rewarded, he will be warped outside the shrine. Now you can interact with all sorts of objects in the world using the Magnesis Rune.
You can use the Rune to throw the large boxes you encounter in the world up in the air to uncover the loot inside of them, and pull the treasure chests which are sunken in the water to get even more loot.
The Ja Baij Shrine
After completing The Oman Au Shrine the old man will paraglide over and will inform you that using your Sheikah Slate you can fast travel to the locations that Link has discovered.
The old man will tell Link to meet him at the top of the Great Plateau Tower so take out your Sheikah Slate and fast travel to the tower.
The old man will be present at the tower when Link arrives and will teach him to use the scope ability of your Sheikah Slate.
He then will ask Lik to use the scope ability and pinpoint the locations of the other three shrines.
The three shrines are easily visible from the tower but can be missed easily. Use the scope ability to look for the shrines and mark them on your map.
If you’re having trouble finding the Shrines, one of them is at the eastern section of the map in the Eastern Abbey area, another one is towards the east of Mount Hylia in the southern part of the map, and the final one is towards the west of the River of the Dead in the far west section of the map.
The closest shrine to The Great Plateau tower is Shrine Ja Baij located at the east of the tower.
This shrine is located in a maze-like area and is surrounded by inactive guardians which will activate if you get close.
Also, the path to the shrine is blocked by a large boulder you can either go at the back of the shrine and climb the wall to get inside or manipulate the guardian to shoot at the boulder to destroy it. Once inside place the Sheikah Slate on the pedestal to open the entrance to the Ja Baij Shrine.
If you got the DLC, you can get a purple chest from the wall outside the shrine. This chest contains a Nintendo Switch Shirt.
The Bomb Trial
After entering the shrine, place the Sheikah Slate on the pedestal on the left side to get the Remote Bomb Rune, which will give you the ability to use Remote Bombs.
Spherical bombs are better for rolling down slopes and Square Bombs are better for more precise hits.
Do note that these bombs do not have a timer to them, they only explode when you trigger them using the rune. You can also use them infinitely, but each use will give you a small cooldown.
There’s a couple of boulders in the first room that you can blow up. After doing that, move towards the right and get rid of a few more boulders to get to a treasure chest which has a Traveler’s Claymore inside of it.
Go back to where you came from and break the wall and head to the hallway. There’s another breakable wall on the right side with a Traveler’s Sword behind it.
Head back and destroy two rocks to reveal a ladder. In the next area, place a Square Bomb at the end of the rotating platform.
In the next large area, there will be some machines which fire in a specific direction. Next to the first one will be a little funnel.
Toss a Spherical Bomb in this tunnel and it’ll launch itself to the other side of the room. You can then trigger it to destroy some blocks.
Before you progress forward, go to the opposite side of the room where there’s a couple of these machines. You can use one of them to launch yourself to a treasure chest on the other side of the room. There will be a piece of Amber in it.
After doing all of that, go down to the ground floor and get to the ladder. Since the boulders that were above have now been removed, you can now go up and head to the Monk.
He will reward you with a Spirit Orb and send you back to the surface.
The Owa Daim Shrine
The Owa Daim shrine is located to the south-central of the Great Plateau (at the south-eastern corner of the Mount Hylia area of the map).
This shrine is located at the top of a hill and there are multiple ways to reach it. This shrine and the one after this are located in a colder climate and Link will not survive without proper gear.
The fastest way to get to these shrines is through heading towards the Temple of Time located in the middle of the map.
From the temple go west and you will see an archway that leads to a snowy plain and just next to the archway there will be Spicy Peppers so be sure to grab them.
However, before going any further ahead go north and you will find a Bokoblin camp. Get rid of the enemies so you can cook and you will find more spicy peppers in the area.
Either use a Bokoblin Club or a Tree branch to light it on fire and use it to light up the fire beneath the pot.
Cook some Spicy Sautéed Peppers and consume then as this will grant you cold resistance for some time. Now make your way to the shrine.
The first thing that you need to do is to use your Sheikah Slate on the left side pedestal to get the Stasis Rune that allows you to freeze time.
While the objects around you are frozen in time, you can strike them to charge them up with kinetic energy, which is released all at once when you resume the time. This means that you can launch massive objects across the area.
When the platform is straight, use the Stasis Rune on the large gear on the left side to get into the next area. However, you need to be extra careful while doing so because of incoming boulders that can kill you. Wait for one to pass and use the rune on the next one.
This should allow you to head into the next section. Before you do so, wait until the boulder goes by and then go up to the top of the ramp where the boulders come from.
You’ll find a treasure chest containing a Traveler’s Shield here. There’s also a treasure chest on a higher platform which you should try and get. From the first platform, grab the Iron Sledgehammer and equip it.
Now you need to use the Stasis Rune on the boulder and continue hitting it with the Iron Sledgehammer to build its momentum and reveal a new path.
The path should lead you across the bridge where you’ll get to see the monk Owa Dain and grab the Spirit Orb.
The Keh Numut Shrine
Keh Numut shrine is located at the western section of the Great Plateau, to the left of the River of Dead. It is on top of one of the mountains in this region. Like the previous shrine, you’ll have to bring in some sort of protection to the cold climate here.
Before you go to the Keh Numut Shrine, go up to the top of Mount Hylia to find an Old Man who’ll give you a Warm doublet. This is another item which will help you fight the cold climate. You can also get some Amber from the rock close by.
If you got the DLC, you can get a purple chest from the base of the mountain which has the shrine at the peak. Look for the broken walls on the left side of the plateau and you’ll find a chest on top of one of them, containing a few Bomb Arrows.
As you enter use your Sheikah Slate on the left side pedestal to get the Cryonis Rune that allows you to create icy blocks and platforms from the water. Once you’ve it, use the rune to create a pillar and get to the next area by grabbing the ledge.
In the next area, use the rune directly underneath the gate to force pry it open. On the other side of the gate, you’ll be greeted by a Mini Guardian. By this time, you should be well familiar with dealing with these so do whatever works.
Once you’re in the final area, create ice pillars on both sides of the raised platform to access the upper area. Once you’re up, don’t head to the monk and look for a treasure chest in an alcove. It contains a Traveler’s Spear.
At the end of this walkway, you’ll come across a platform sitting on the ground. Build a pillar under it, to the right, to turn it into a ramp. This will let you go up it and arrive at the end of the shrine where can get the Spirit Orb from the Monk.
The Paraglider
After completing all four shrines the Old Man will appear again and will give you a hint about a place where he wants to meet. That place is the Temple of Time, which is close to the middle of the great Plateau.
As you arrive at the Temple of Time you will see a shining Goddess statue ahead. Whenever you have four Spirit Orbs, you can pray to the statue, and upgrade your character.
After this, the old man will call Link from atop the Temple. Climb to the top of the temple and speak with the old man and he will tell you what is going on and will give the Paraglider to link.
