Lara Croft wouldn’t be herself if it wasn’t for her attraction to tombs. Even the young and inexperienced portrayal of hers in the new Tomb Raider suggests that the sight of tombs and relics piques her interest.
That’s why tombs are an essential part of the game. Though they can be categorized as optional objectives, they are quite important for those looking for deeper insight of what the Yamatai Island has to offer.
From well-lit tombs with elegant Japanese statues to those with skulls and dead bodies, the variety on the island is reason itself to explore these risky and forbidden areas.
But it’s not just visuals and history that are reason for the exploration; tombs are important for those looking to get their hands on Treasure Maps. There are a total of 14 treasure maps in the game, of which 7 are located in the 7 tombs.
These tombs require Lara to use her agility and skills to solve puzzles and get through challenging areas swiftly. At the end of each tomb is a large golden treasure chest, containing a treasure map and sometimes other items.
It is important to note that some tombs cannot be completed (or even accessed) without proper equipment. For example, the final tomb, called the Temple of Handmaidens, requires a rare tool called the Rope Ascender, which can be found during one of the main missions.
Thus, it’s important not to try and get ahead of yourself, and only attempt to raid the tomb when you have sufficient equipment. Like the Rope Ascender, all the other equipment is mainly unlocked by progressing through the main storyline.
Each tomb is preceded with an unwelcoming long and narrow pathway, which ultimately leads to an associated day camp. Usually, the tombs are parts of small caves, in which Lara must use her instincts to reach the treasure chest at the end of each tomb.

Below are the locations where you can find the tombs. As stated earlier, some tombs cannot be even accessed without specific equipment.
- Mountain Village – Tomb of the Unworthy and Hall of Ascension
- Shantytown –Well of Tears and Chamber of Judgment
- Summit Forrest – Stormguard Sanctum
- Shipwreck Beach – Temple of the Handmaidens and The Flooded Vault
