Armor
Most Monster Hunter World armor comes out of the monsters you kill, and there is nothing to explain about that: hunt the thing, carve the thing, forge the set. The armor worth writing about is the armor that does not work that way, and every piece of it is gated by a token rather than by a carve.
So this page is not a power ranking. It is sorted by whether the gate in front of a piece is actually open, running from materials you can farm on your own schedule, through tickets that only exist while an event is on rotation, to a collaboration whose original window closed years ago. The question every section answers first is the one the ranking lists never do: can I still get this.
| Gate | What it costs | Open right now? |
|---|---|---|
| Farmable materials | Ore, bones and rare drops you can go and get whenever you like | Always |
| Event tickets | A quest reward that only drops while the event quest is live | Only on rotation |
| The Horizon collaboration | Watcher Lens from Lessons of the Wild | The original windows closed. Returns on rotation |
| Augmenting what you already own | Guiding Lands drops, and Master Rank access | Always, once you are in Iceborne’s endgame |
Gate 1: armor you can farm on your own schedule
Everything in this tier is available today and will be available next month. The only cost is knowing where the material is.
The Death Stench Set is the one people miss, because its material never drops from a hunt. Sinister Cloth comes only from Tailrider Safari runs, which you have to send out manually through the Housekeeper in your Astera living quarters, and only routes of Rank 4 or higher can return it. It is a rare drop even then. The reward is a High Rank set at 160 defense that you can grind for entirely between hunts rather than during them. Our Sinister Cloth guide covers the safari routes.
For ordinary forge work, the material that turns up in nearly every armor recipe is Dragonite Ore, and some pieces want as many as ten of it. Bones are the other constant once you reach Master Rank, and Thick Bone specifically matters here because it is a direct ingredient in the next section. Both are node materials, which means they are a route rather than a hunt, and our materials guide has the routes.
Gate 2: armor behind a rotating event ticket
These pieces exist only while their event quest is live, which means the honest advice is to check what is on rotation before you plan anything around them.
Wyverian Ears
The gate is a Wyverian Ticket, and the quest that gives it is one of the easiest in Iceborne. Flora Frostbite is a Master Rank event quest in Hoarfrost Reach, and the objective is to collect 10 Iceblooms off the ground in the area where you fight Velkhana and Barioth. No monster has to be fought at all. Clear it, then take the ticket to the forge with 3 Thick Bones and 12,000z.
| Wyverian Ear Armor | Value |
|---|---|
| Rarity | 9 |
| Defense | 140 |
| Decoration slot | One level 4 slot |
| Skills | Mushroomancer +2, Survival Expert +1 |
| Best resistance | Dragon |
| Forge cost | Wyverian Ticket, 3 Thick Bones and 12,000z |
Our own verdict travels with it, and it is worth repeating rather than hiding: this is a novelty. It occupies your entire helmet slot without giving you a helmet's protection, and it is not layered armor by default, so a high-level player is giving up real defense to wear it. The reason it is not worthless is that single level 4 decoration slot, which lets it carry a jewel most helmets cannot, and the Mushroomancer and Survival Expert levels feed a Wide-Range support build. Full details on our Wyverian Ears guide.
Tickets that look like armor tickets and are not
This is worth a paragraph because burning a rotation on the wrong grind is the most expensive mistake in this bucket. The 50 Shades of White Fest Ticket buys Guild Palace weapons, not armor, at two tickets per weapon across fourteen weapons. A Shocking Climax drops the Unity Symbol, three of which forge a hammer. Beef is Never a Mi-steak drops the Meaty Canteen Ticket, also for a hammer.
The Holiday Joy Fest is the one that genuinely does pay armor, in the form of VIP tickets that forge holiday sets for both hunter and Palico, including layered pieces. One item in that rotation is not a costume: Oolong Alpha+ speeds up Joyful Ticket acquisition, so forging it early makes farming the rest of the set faster. And whatever you are farming, burn a Lucky Voucher before the hunt, since you get three a day during the Grand Appreciation Fest and they improve ticket drops.
Gate 3: the Horizon collaboration
Capcom and Guerrilla Games put two things into Monster Hunter World to mark its launch: Aloy's own armor and bow, and a Watcher-themed Palico set. The route to the Palico gear is the one our coverage documents in full.
Accept Lessons of the Wild, which needs Hunter Rank 6 or above, and head to the Arena. The objective is 8 Barnos in under 50 minutes, and the Barnos arrive alongside a Tzitzi-Ya-Ku. That sounds like a complication and is actually the solution: bait the Tzitzi-Ya-Ku's flash onto the Barnos and kill them while they are stunned. Each clear gives Watcher Lens, so run it as many times as the window allows. Then take 2 Watcher Lens and 3 Dragonite Ore to the Smithy, choose Forge Palico Equipment, and you get the Watcher Head and Watcher Body.
Be clear-eyed about the timing, because this is the fact the ranking pages leave out. The original windows were the Palico set until 8 February 2018 and Aloy's own gear from 28 February 2018. Both are long closed. The quest comes back on rotation rather than being gone forever, which means the practical advice is to keep Dragonite Ore stocked so that when Lessons of the Wild reappears you only have to farm the Lens. Our Aloy's bow and armor guide has the full run, and the Palico side of it connects to our Palicoes guide.
Gate 4: augmenting armor you already own
Past the story, the gate stops being a ticket and becomes a Guiding Lands drop. Great Spiritvein Gem is what augments Rarity 12 gear and raises its defense value, and it also feeds high-level charms. It drops from several Guiding Lands monsters, and the recommended farm is Kirin or Namielle because the areas are small and carry no negative status effects. Severed tails can be carved into one, and breaking, flinching, stunning and clutch-claw-slamming a monster all multiply your part drops, so Partbreaker and Slugger pay for themselves on a farm run.
Two tempered materials sit alongside it. Tempered Azure Mane comes from tempered Lunastra and feeds slot and affinity augments plus Handcraft Charm 4 and Challenge Charm 4, but Lunastra only appears on bait once you have raised the Guiding Lands Wildspire region to level 7. Tempered Crownhorn is Guiding Lands only and drops from exactly one monster in the game. Our Great Spiritvein Gem, Tempered Azure Mane and Tempered Crownhorn guides cover the farms.
What actually raises your defense
Not the defense number on the piece, which is the trap this whole bucket sets. What raises your survivability is the skills a set carries and the jewels you slot into it, and both of those reward mixing pieces rather than wearing a matched set. Our skills guide covers what is worth stacking and our upgrades guide covers how the Smithy and the Charm slot work.
That is also the argument for the Wyverian Ears. A helmet at 140 defense is poor, but a level 4 decoration slot is rare, and in the late game a good jewel in an open slot is worth more than the difference between two helmets. Our decorations guide covers which jewels justify the trade.
When your armor is wrong for the fight, wear a mantle
The thing most armor guides never say: you do not need a dedicated elemental set for every hunt, because a mantle covers the same gap for its duration on a cooldown, and switching a mantle costs nothing. Thunderproof handles the elemental problem in A Shocking Climax, Fireproof handles Glavenus's Fireblight, and the Vitality Mantle soaks a fireball you were going to eat anyway. Our mantles guide has all of them with their durations, cooldowns and unlock quests.
So which of these is worth your time
If you are new, none of it. Farm Gate 1 materials, stack skills across mixed sets, and put your zenny into two or three pieces rather than a wardrobe. If you are back to check a rotation, go to Gate 2, and check the ticket actually forges armor before you commit an evening. If you are finishing the game off, Gate 3 is a waiting game and Gate 4 is where your defense number actually moves. Our builds overview is the next stop once you know what you are wearing.
