Items
Our two Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain item pages describe collectibles that live at the same addresses. The invoices guide walks the 21 fast travel points, 12 in Afghanistan and 9 in Africa, each an orange loading zone that unlocks fast travel for its area once you have found it. The cassette tapes guide locates 35 music tapes and eight acquired tapes, and laying its entries beside the invoice list shows that 31 of the 35 music tapes are playing inside one of those same 21 outposts. So this page is sorted by location rather than by collectible type. Reach an invoice, and the table tells you which radios to listen for before you leave.
Two Collectibles, One Address Book
An invoice pays once. Finding it unlocks fast travel for that area, and the invoices page says the set is also what earns a couple of key items and, with them, the Collector achievement. It notes that not every named location has one; OKB Zero has no fast travel point at all. A music tape pays every time you deploy: the tapes page describes them as 80s tracks you play back from the iDroid while on a mission or wandering the map, and says the game keeps its own score deliberately quiet to make room for them. Acquired tapes are a third kind, clips and sound effects rather than songs, and they are tools: they need the iDroid Speaker upgrade and are played to distract or settle enemies and animals.
The two pages name the same places two ways. The invoices page uses the map's English labels (Shago Village, Wialo Village, Masa Village) while the tapes page and our side ops walkthrough more often use the local names (Da Shago Kallai, Da Wialo Kallai, Bwala ya Masa). The table below gives the invoice page's name first and the other form in brackets where the pages differ.
Afghanistan: 12 Invoices and 19 Tapes
| Location | Where the invoice sits | Music tapes playing here |
|---|---|---|
| Afghanistan Central Base Camp | Straight ahead and over the bridge, on the right by some boxes | Love Will Tear Us Apart |
| Serak Power Plant | In front of the radio tower on the main road, left of a small building | Nitrogen, in the northernmost building |
| Yakho Oboo Supply Outpost | Where the bridge on the right side ends | Take on Me, in a room on the western side |
| Lamar Khaate Palace | In front of a half-destroyed building | Ride a White Horse at the north guard post, Maneater under the canopy out front, Hall & Oates in the rightmost room of the second floor |
| Shago Village (Da Shago Kallai) | Off the fenced path, on the right as you face the compound | Spandau Ballet and Kids in America, both in the room the Spetsnaz commander uses at night |
| Wialo Village (Da Wialo Kallai) | On the main road, next to a tank | She Blinded Me With Science at a small outpost on the road to Da Ghwandai Khar, Behind the Drapery on a radio in the locked room below the Miller file |
| Eastern Communications Post | On the outskirts, to your left on the way in | Only Time Will Tell, in the building holding the comms server |
| Ghwandai Town (Da Ghwandai Khar) | On the left of the path leading into town | Koi No Yokushiryoku (Love Deterrence), outside the room where Miller is held in the first infiltration; the side ops page places that room here |
| Wakh Sind Barracks | On the left on the way up, by two shipping containers | Afghan Lullaby at the base of a half-built building, A Phantom Pain in a shack at the east end |
| Sakhra Ee Village (Qarya Sakhra Ee) | Across the main road, next to a watchtower | The Final Countdown in a small building on the east side, Planet Scape at the southern guard post |
| Smasei Fort (Da Smasei Laman) | Down the main path, on your right | Take the D.W. under the canopy by the amphitheater, Dormant Stream at the west guard post |
| Mountain Relay Base | On the left of the road in, by a green tent past the roadblocks | Rebel Yell, west of the bridge |
Lamar Khaate Palace is the only stop in either region with three tapes, one at a guard post, one under a canopy and one indoors, so it repays a slow walk. Five Afghan locations hold two tapes and the other six hold one. Every one of the twelve holds at least one, which is the fact that makes the invoice run double as a tape run.
Africa: 9 Invoices and 12 Tapes
| Location | Where the invoice sits | Music tapes playing here |
|---|---|---|
| Lufwa Valley | In front of a large white building | You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) at the northwest guard post, Friday I’m in Love in the mansion |
| Kungenga Mine | Left of the watchtower you reach by heading straight in | True, and 204863 at the southwest guard post |
| Bampeve Plantation | Left of the road up, near a jeep and a watchtower | Midnight Mirage, in the northernmost building |
| Mfinda Oilfield | Left from the white building at the main entrance, by a wall | Quiet Life, in the southeastern building |
| Masa Village (Bwala ya Masa) | On the road up, near a watchtower | How ‘bout them zombies ey?, in the easternmost building |
| Kiziba Camp | Between a watchtower and the tent camp on the muddy path | Too Shy, in the tent by the anti-air radar |
| Ditadi Abandoned Village | Near a jeep and wooden sheds, before the fork | Dancing With Tears in My Eyes, in the tent near the hill |
| Nova Braga Airport | Back-left of the compound, by some boxes | Gloria, in the eastern building |
| Munoko ya Nioka Station | By the tents and cartons along the muddy path | Snake Eater at the west guard post, All the Sun Touches |
Africa is the shorter list on both counts: nine invoices against twelve, and twelve tapes against nineteen. Three of its nine stops hold two tapes (Lufwa Valley, Kungenga Mine and Munoko ya Nioka Station) and the rest hold one. The Snake Eater tape, which the tapes page calls the official song of Metal Gear Solid 3, is the one at the west guard post by the station.
The Four Music Tapes With No Invoice Nearby
The join leaves four tapes over, and they are the four you cannot pick up on a fast travel run. The Tangerine is at the east guard post of Spugmay Keep, a place the invoices page does not list among its 21. The other three are tied to missions rather than places: Heavens Divide is in the elevator you ride before reaching Skull Face in Mission 30, the Peace Walker main theme is in the basement of the Quarantine Platform during Mission 43, and The Man Who Sold the World is simply handed to you for finishing Mission 46.
The Eight Acquired Tapes and What Each Does
The tapes page lists eight acquired tapes. Three come from enemy territory and five from your own base, and the base ones follow one rule: extract an animal of a given type and its tape appears at the Animal Conservation Platform. Our Mother Base guide adds that the platform only opens after you have extracted six wild animals and finished missions 7 through 10, and that you reach it through the Aerial Command Center rather than by walking there.
| Tape | Where it comes from | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Afghanistan Soviet Soldier | Sakhra Ee Village | Cancels the Combat Status of Soviet soldiers once you have broken line of sight |
| Central Africa PF Soldier | Nova Braga Airport | The same, for African PF soldiers |
| Soldier with Stomachache | Villages such as Masa Village | Played from inside a toilet, cancels suspicion; does nothing during Combat Status |
| Bird | Animal Conservation Platform, after extracting a bird | Birds stay put for a Fulton; also cancels suspicion outside combat |
| Goat | The platform, after extracting a goat | Goats do not run; cancels suspicion outside combat |
| Horse | The platform, after extracting a horse | Horses do not run; cancels suspicion outside combat |
| Wolf | The platform, after extracting a wolf | Wolves do not run; cancels suspicion outside combat |
| Bear | The platform, after extracting a bear | Bears do not move away; cancels suspicion outside combat |
Two of the three field tapes sit at invoice locations too (Sakhra Ee Village and Nova Braga Airport), so a full sweep of the 21 fast travel points passes 33 of the 43 tapes the page locates. Info tapes are the one kind with no map position at all: the tapes page says they arrive by completing main missions and side ops, which is why they are the game's story rather than its scavenger hunt.
Where to Go Next
Fast travel is only useful once you have somewhere to go, and the side ops walkthrough names the same outposts over and over: Yakho Oboo, Da Smasei Laman, Bampeve Plantation and Munoko ya Nioka Station each host several. The tapes you play from the iDroid and the emblem on your chopper are both set at the Aerial Command Center, which the Mother Base, codenames and emblems guide covers. The Phantom Pain guide puts the whole loop in order.
Tape and Invoice Questions
How many cassette tapes does our guide locate?
Forty-three with a place attached: 35 music tapes and 8 acquired tapes. Info tapes are not counted because they are mission rewards rather than pickups.
Is there a Snake Eater tape?
Yes. It is playing at the west guard post near Munoko ya Nioka Station in Africa, the same stop that holds the All the Sun Touches tape and an invoice.
How many invoices are there?
Twenty-one, twelve in Afghanistan and nine in Africa. Each one unlocks fast travel for its own area, and the set feeds the Collector achievement.
