Fire Emblem Engage has one place you return to between battles, and visiting it early is a slightly disappointing experience. The floating island is open from the start, but almost nothing on it works yet. That is deliberate, and it makes the Somniel less a location than a release schedule: facilities switch on chapter by chapter, and the chapter number is the thing worth knowing.

Our Somniel guide walks every facility. Read as a timetable, it looks like this.

Unlocks afterWhat opensWhy it matters
Chapter 4Ring Chamber, Armory, Item shop, Training Yard, Sommie in the GrottoThe whole base effectively begins here
Chapter 5Boutique and SmithyForging becomes possible

Chapter 4 is the real opening of the game. Five separate systems arrive at once, and one of them, the Ring Chamber, is where the single most important mechanic in Engage lives. That is where you polish Emblem Rings for bond experience and where inherited skills are bought once a bond reaches level 5. If you have been skipping the base to push the story, chapter 4 is where that stops being reasonable.

What each visit actually costs

The Somniel is not free-form. Several facilities are rationed per visit, which is what turns it from a menu into a set of choices.

The Arena gives you three Standard training battles per visit and no more. Emblem training in the same building is unlimited, but it costs 100 Bond Fragments per level, which is the same currency Bond Rings are made from. That is the sharpest trade in the game: fragments spent on bond levels stay with an Emblem, and fragments spent on rings stay with a unit.

The Café Terrace allows one ordered meal per visit, shared with allies for mutual support, and one leftover meal packed into your inventory to eat mid-battle for instant health. Resting in My Room advances the time of day and changes which character is cooking, which is the lever if you want a different chef.

Ring polishing in the Ring Chamber is once per battle. Between that cap and the arena's fragment cost, bond levels are the resource the base is really metering.

Sommie, and the one bond that decays

Sommie arrives with everything else at chapter 4 and is the only relationship in the game that goes backwards if ignored. Our page is explicit that the bond deteriorates over time, so petting and feeding it is maintenance rather than a one-off.

The payoff is spread across three activities: Sommie helps in strength training, in fishing and on Wyvern rides, and in the Training Yard it will cover for six incorrect moves. Feeding it rarer ingredients raises the bond faster, which links it back to fishing and the Orchard, where the plants you harvest between battles come from.

The shortest useful routine

If you want a checklist rather than a map, our what to do after battles guide is the companion piece to this one. The version that fits in a paragraph: polish your rings, use your three arena battles on whoever is chasing a skill, order a meal and pack the leftovers, feed Sommie, and harvest the Orchard on your way out.

Everything else on the island can wait for the chapter that unlocks it, and the Tower of Trials in particular is worth leaving until chapter 11, when Tempest trials arrive and you no longer need a membership to use the building at all.
