Items

Two kinds of item define a Diablo 3 character once the campaign is done: the sets whose bonuses turn a skill into a build, and the crafted rings that speed up everything else. Our two item pages cover one of each. Item Sets catalogues the classic class sets and the generic ones with their pieces and bonuses, and Hellfire Ring walks through the longest crafting project in Reaper of Souls.

How set bonuses work

Set items and legendaries are the game's unique items: their stats are fixed no matter where or when they drop, unlike every other item type. A set is a named group of pieces, and the bonus starts the moment you wear two of them, grows with each additional piece, and peaks when the whole set is on. Our page uses Natalya's Wrath as the example: five pieces, a bonus at two, a bigger one for more, and the full effect at all five. Some sets are generic and any class can wear them; the strongest are class-specific. Pieces drop at your level, and as our farming page notes, the Reaper of Souls sets only appear at Torment difficulty.

The five-piece sets are the armor cores; the two-piece sets are weapon and off-hand pairs for the same classes. Our sets page lists the armor and damage ranges of every piece. The sets that power the current endgame builds, such as Wrath of the Wastes, Aegis of Valor, Unhallowed Essence, Raiment of a Thousand Storms, Zunimassa's Haunt and Vyr's Arcana, are described build by build in the classes guide.

The Hellfire Ring, step by step

In Reaper of Souls the Hellfire Ring is a level 70 ring that raises experience gain by 45 percent, which makes it the item to craft before any long leveling or Paragon grind. Our page calls it hard to assemble because every ingredient is gated behind a boss with a less than certain drop.

  1. Kill the four Keywardens: Act I in the Fields of Misery, Act II in the Dahlgur Oasis, Act III at Stonefort, and Act IV on The Silver Spite Level 1. Each drops a key and a blueprint for one of the four Infernal Machines.
  2. Craft the Infernal Machines from the blueprints. Each machine opens a portal to a different pair of Uber Bosses.
  3. Defeat the Uber Bosses and collect their drops. The drop rate is not 100 percent, so expect to run the portals more than once.
  4. Use the boss drops to buy the Hellfire Ring plan, then craft the ring at the Jeweler.

The ring pairs well with the leveling advice in the mechanics guide, since the experience bonus multiplies every Massacre streak and completed map. Farming the materials for the Infernal Machines is also a natural use for the Expert-then-Torment I difficulty progression our legendary farming page recommends.
