Baldur’s Gate 3: Lae’zel Companion Guide
Lae’zel is the first companion Baldur’s Gate 3 shows you and the last one it lets you take for granted. She is a Githyanki Fighter with a Soldier background, an origin character with her own questline, and the only party member whose story ends with the fate of an entire people. She fights beside you aboard the Nautiloid, vanishes when it crashes, and turns up again in a cage on the Ravaged Beach. Free her there and she joins on the spot. Walk past, and you get exactly one more chance.
This page is the overview of everything our guides cover on her: how to recruit her, what she is good at, what she approves of, how the romance runs across three acts, and which endings her quest can reach. The detailed walkthroughs live on the approval, build, romance and endings pages, and on the quest page for The Githyanki Warrior.
Where to find and recruit Lae’zel
You meet her during Escape the Nautiloid, after the jump across the gap on the burning path. She ambushes you, takes you for a ghaik, and calms down once you tell her you are turning into a mind flayer too. She fights the three imps with you and helps crash the ship. When you wake on the beach, she is gone.
Head north of the crash site on the Ravaged Beach, toward the Cathedral Ruins, at roughly X: 240, Y: 354. Two Tieflings have her in a cage. You can persuade or intimidate them into leaving, or kill them, then break the cage and talk to her. She joins immediately and The Githyanki Warrior begins. Siding with the Tieflings makes her hostile, and the only way out of that is killing her, which ends her quest before it starts.
If you leave her in the cage she reaches the Druid Grove on her own, and the build page adds one last chance with the Githyanki patrol near the Mountain Pass. Recruiting her at either point is harder than at the cage. There is no separate recruit page for her; the companions guide covers which companions can be lost and how.
Race, class and starting stats
Lae’zel is a Fighter, the class our beginner ranking calls the most versatile with weapons and armour. As an origin character her race, class and background are locked: Githyanki, Fighter, Soldier. The Githyanki racial kit gives her Mage Hand, Jump and Misty Step, plus Martial Prodigy, which grants proficiency with light and medium armour and every martial weapon. She starts with a Githyanki Half Plate, a longsword and a shortbow, and is proficient in Acrobatics, Athletics, Arcana, Survival and Intimidation.
| Ability | Score |
|---|---|
| Strength | 17 |
| Dexterity | 13 |
| Constitution | 14 |
| Intelligence | 11 |
| Wisdom | 12 |
| Charisma | 8 |
The scores above are the default sheet from our companions guide. The companion tier list puts her in S tier alongside Shadowheart, on the strength of that 17 Strength and a Constitution high enough to make her the party’s main tank. Surviving the Zaith’isk in the Creche also gives her the Awakened buff, which the outcomes page describes as control over the Illithid powers.
Best build for Lae’zel
Two subclasses compete for her. The tier list recommends Battle Master for the maneuvers, Menacing Attack and Rally, which hands an ally 8 temporary hit points. The Patch 8 build switches to Eldritch Knight instead, taking Booming Blade and Mage Hand at level 3, Shield and Magic Missile as its first spells, and War Magic at level 7 so a cantrip can be followed by a weapon attack as a bonus action. That build puts both level 4 and level 8 feats into Dexterity, takes Great Weapon Master at level 6, and dips one level of Oath of the Crown Paladin at 12 for Righteous Clarity.
Gear-wise it wants the Helm of Balduran, Armor of Agility, Gauntlets of Surging Accuracy, Briskwind Boots, Ring of Protection, Killer’s Sweetheart and the Amulet of Greater Health. The weapon is the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane, which only reaches its full effect in Githyanki hands: 2d6 plus 6 slashing with an extra 1d6 psychic, advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma saves, and immunity to being charmed. You can try to make Kith’rak Voss drop it with a Drop command at the Mountain Pass bridge; otherwise any greatsword serves until it turns up.
For the class itself, our Battle Master build, Eldritch Knight build and best Fighter races page all name Githyanki as a natural fit, so nothing about her origin fights the build.
What Lae’zel approves and disapproves of
Her values are direct action, cruelty, militarism and the superiority of the Gith. Anything compassionate, diplomatic or kind to animals costs approval. The approval page lists every choice by act; the table below pulls out the ones that recur across her pages.
| Approves | Disapproves |
|---|---|
| Letting her interrogate Zorru in the Grove, and making him kneel | Stopping her from hurting Zorru |
| Attacking the Owlbear in her nest; looting the Selunite chest | Letting the Owlbear and her cub live; refusing the chest |
| Recruiting Karlach and siding with her against Wyll | Freeing the goblin Sazza from the Grove |
| Letting her lead inside Creche Y’llek and showing the Artefact to the guard | Ignoring or destroying the Creche; destroying the Githyanki egg |
| Kneeling to Vlaakith and entering the Artefact | Mocking the Creche and its library at camp |
| Attacking Lady Esther; offering Fezzerk a fair fight at Moonrise | Letting Fezzerk extort you in the Blighted Village |
| Accepting her advances | Rejecting her advances, or siding with Shadowheart over her |
Her approval bar sometimes fails to display. The approval page treats this as a display bug only: the progress is still tracked, and a patch or a restart brings the bar back.
The Githyanki Warrior, act by act
Her companion quest wants one thing: the Creche her people run, where she believes the parasite can be removed. Zevlor in the Grove points you to the Tiefling Zorru, who saw a Githyanki patrol on a bridge near the Mountain Pass. At that bridge Kith’rak Voss asks about the Artefact Shadowheart carries. Tell the truth and the patrol attacks, an extremely tough fight this early; let Lae’zel play along and pass a DC 10 Persuasion check and Voss flies off. Crossing the stone bridge afterwards is the game’s first point of no return.
The Githyanki Creche sits under Rosymorn Monastery, reached by cable car. Enter with Lae’zel leading and the whole Creche is friendly; enter without her, or force your way in, and everyone turns hostile. Ghustil Stornugoss then offers the Zaith’isk. Sit in it yourself: the saves are DC 10 Intelligence, DC 12 Wisdom and DC 15 Constitution, and every failure costs 2 points of the matching ability. Let Lae’zel take the seat and saving her needs a DC 30 Wisdom roll; fail it and she carries Weak Wisdom, Weak Intelligence and Weak Constitution until you use a tadpole on her. The Zaith’isk outcomes page has the full breakdown; either way the device explodes and the parasite stays.
Furious, she demands the Inquisitor. Vlaakith herself appears and orders you into the Astral Plane to kill the Dream Visitor. Refuse to enter and Lae’zel turns hostile unless her approval is high and you pass a DC 12 Persuasion check. Enter, and spare the Dream Visitor: killing them gains nothing and Vlaakith betrays you regardless. Back in the chamber Ch’r’ai W’wargaz attacks. The Githyanki Inquisitor opens with Mindsteal Link, gaining armour class per creature in the room, so bring no summons and kill his four warriors first. Win, and Lae’zel’s faith in her queen breaks.
In Act 2 Kith’rak Voss visits camp at a long rest with the truth about the Artefact: it holds Prince Orpheus, whom Vlaakith claims is dead. In Act 3 Voss waits on the top floor of Sharess’ Caress with a plan to free the prince using the Orphic Hammer. Raphael will hand it over for the Crown of Karsus, a deal the quest page warns against; the alternative is Helsik at the Devil’s Fee, a 20,000 gold portal you can talk down to 10,000 or pay with a promise of the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength once you have stolen them, and a theft from the House of Hope that ends with Raphael blocking the exit.
Two side quests hang off the same road. Steal a Githyanki Egg can be done without a fight by passing DC 14 and DC 16 Persuasion checks on the hatchery guard Varsh Ko’kuu, and Lae’zel approves of attacking Lady Esther instead. Destroying the egg costs her approval. Rosymorn also holds the Blood of Lathander, which the Creche page calls the best early legendary weapon.
How to romance Lae’zel
She is the earliest romance in the game. With her approval in the green by the Grove celebration after Halsin is rescued, she propositions you at camp; say yes and pick her at the bedroll. At the first rest in Act 2 she confesses and asks for a duel, which you can win or lose without consequence, then tells you she is yours. In Act 3, after you obtain the Orphic Hammer and reach the Lower City, Vlaakith visits camp to tempt her back. Beg her not to fall for it, and at the next long rest the scene ends with a sunrise together.
The romance survives the ending only if you free Orpheus and neither you nor the prince becomes a mind flayer. If you become one she leaves, romance or not. If Orpheus does, she flies with him to face Vlaakith, and you can only go with her as a Githyanki. The romance page has the exact dialogue lines for each scene.
Every Lae’zel ending
| What you do | What happens to her |
|---|---|
| Side with the Tieflings at the cage, or refuse Vlaakith’s portal | She turns hostile and dies; the quest ends in Act 1 |
| Kill Orpheus and side with the Emperor | She stays only until the Elder Brain falls, then leaves for good |
| Free Orpheus and become the mind flayer yourself | She flies with Orpheus on his red dragons to kill Vlaakith; she cannot stay with an Illithid |
| Free Orpheus and let him turn | She leaves to take his place; a romanced Githyanki player can join her, or she forsakes her people to stay |
| Free Orpheus and let Karlach turn | Orpheus lives and asks her to hunt Vlaakith; you can stop her or join her |
| She still trusts Vlaakith at the end | She kills Orpheus and flies to her queen |
| Play her as an origin character and seize the Netherstones | A Patch 7 ending: she turns her Illithid army on Vlaakith and rules the Githyanki as the thing she hated most |
The endings page walks through each branch, including the four evil options an origin Lae’zel gets after passing the Constitution check at the brain.
