The Athlete career is unusual in stating its price up front. Most jobs in the game reward skills vaguely; this one names the Charisma and Fitness levels it wants for each of the first four promotions, which makes it the easiest career in the folder to plan a week around. Get to the gym, talk to people, and the ranks arrive on schedule.

The pattern is as plain as it looks: each promotion wants both skills at the level you are climbing into. Keep them moving together and nothing here stalls.

Daily task: mentor another Sim through a workout. That means you need a second Sim exercising nearby, which is easy at a gym and awkward at home.

Daily task: study your opponents, which your Sim can do alone at a computer. That is the quiet argument for this branch, because a task you can complete without another Sim present is a task that never blocks.
Which Branch To Take
Pro Athlete leads at ranks 5, 6 and 7, then Bodybuilder overtakes it at 9 and finishes a clear §1,002 a day ahead at level 10. So the answer depends on how long you intend to keep the job: a Sim who will retire in the middle of the ladder earns more as an athlete, and a Sim going all the way to the top earns more as a bodybuilder. Neither top salary reaches the ten jobs on our highest paying jobs list, which is worth knowing before committing a Sim's life to the gym.
Cheating A Promotion
The code word does not match the career's name here, which catches people out. It is careers.promote Athletic, not Athlete, and our career cheats guide lists it that way along with the other jobs whose internal names differ from their labels.
