Octopath Traveler Mattias Boss Guide

During chapter 4 in Octopath Traveler, near the end of Ophilia’s story, you will encounter Mattias. He has several defensive shields to protect against damage, but once you take down the shields, he becomes vulnerable to his weaknesses.

The second phase strengthens his defenses with cultists and black matter, making the fight even more difficult. This guide helps you defeat Mattias with the right strategy.

Mattias location

Ebony Grotto in the Flatlands, where Mattias waits at the end of Ophilia's Chapter 4

Mattias is at the end of Ophilia’s Chapter 4 in Octopath Traveler. To find him, travel to a place in the Flatlands called Ebony Grotto on the Continent of Orsterra.

How to defeat Mattias in Octopath Traveler?

Mattias protected by four shields that reproduce twice during the first phase

Mattias’s only defense is the four shields that reproduce twice; therefore, target his elemental weaknesses to deal maximum damage. This will weaken him during the first phase of the fight.

When the next phase begins, Mattias will summon 2 Senior Cultists. This will make the boss ineffective against magic attacks. So, to give him damage, take down these Cultists first.

After taking down the Cultist, Mattias summons Black Matter, and this time, you will be able to deal with magical damage, but he will not be vulnerable to any of his weaknesses now.

Use Reflective Veil to protect your party against Mattias’s magic attacks, and for the physical attacks, have healers in your party.

Weaknesses

Mattias is weak against Ice and light; therefore, you should choose attacks related to that to deal maximum damage. Meanwhile, you can select weapons like Swords and Axes to deal further damage.

Boss special attacks

Special Attacks	What They Do
Consuming Darkness	Consuming Darkness will deal maximum damage to one single enemy.
Black Gale	With this attack, Mattias will be able to deal significant damage to all the enemies. This is done by summoning 2 Black Matter to his side.
Dark Blessing	All the nearby enemies will take magic damage
Infernal Prayer	The enemies will get more physical damage and Mattias will get his turn early.
Black Thunder	With Black Thunder, all the nearby enemies will get large damage due to the charge attack.
