Is Dying Light Cross-Platform? Which Pairings Work and Which Do Not
No. The first Dying Light does not let a PC player and a console player into the same session, and it never has. Techland's own support desk answers it in a single line, and no patch in the years since has added the feature. What the game does have is four-player co-op inside each platform family, a PvP invasion mode that follows the same boundary, and one exception on PC that catches people out, because the three PC storefronts are treated as one platform rather than three. This page takes the question pairing by pairing, says where the answer comes from, and then covers the part most readers ask next, which is what co-op you actually get once you have found a friend on your own machine.
Every pairing, and the answer for each
| You are on | Your friend is on | Can you play together? |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Epic Games Store or GOG | Yes, Techland names all three as one pool |
| Windows | macOS or Linux | Yes, the PC versions share a pool |
| PC, any store | PlayStation or Xbox | No |
| PlayStation | Xbox | No |
| PS4 | PS5 | Yes, one release upgraded by a patch |
| Xbox One | Xbox Series X or Series S | Yes, the same arrangement |
| Nintendo Switch | Anything that is not a Switch | No |
The table has one surprise in it and it is a good one. Techland's support answer says that cross-platform play is not possible for Dying Light, and then adds that players on Steam, GOG and Epic Games can join one another anyway. So the boundary is not drawn around storefronts, it is drawn around machines: a PC copy sits in the same lobby pool whichever store sold it and whichever operating system it runs on, and everything else is walled off.
The generation question Techland has not answered
Console owners usually want to know about the split inside their own family rather than the split between families, and the support desk does not address it. The release history does. On PlayStation and Xbox, the first Dying Light never shipped a separate current-generation edition that could divide the player base in two: the PlayStation 5 version arrived on 8 March 2022 as a free upgrade patch to the game people already owned, and the Xbox Series X and Series S version followed on 22 March 2022 as a performance patch on the same footing. Both consoles are running the same release with better frame rates attached, so there is no second pool for a PS5 owner to be stranded in. Treat that as the practical answer rather than an official one, because Techland has published the patches and the no-crossplay line without ever addressing generations in either.
Saves do not travel either
The same support answer rules out save transfer in the same breath as cross-platform play, which matters more than it sounds. A character in this game is three skill trees and a blueprint collection built over dozens of hours, and buying the game a second time on another platform means starting all of it again, including every recipe on our blueprints page. Be careful with the cross-play trackers here, because at least one of them lists Dying Light as supporting cross-save while pointing readers at the official site for the detail, and the official site is the page that says it does not. Where an aggregator and the developer disagree, take the developer.
What you get instead, on one platform
Harran holds four players at once, and the campaign is the co-op mode rather than a separate playlist, so a session is simply somebody's story with three other people dropped into it. Progress belongs to the host, and everyone else keeps the experience and the loot they pick up, which is why co-op is a good way to fill out a second character's skill trees without replaying the opening. It also takes a good deal of the sting out of the night described on our Volatiles page, because a chase that would corner one player can be broken up by four.
The second multiplayer mode is Be the Zombie, which started life as a pre-order bonus and was later handed to everybody free. One player takes the Night Hunter, an infected with its own skill tree, and invades a session of up to four survivors at night; the humans go after its nests while it works on their shared health pool. Invasions are a setting rather than a fact of life, so a player who wants the night to stay a survival problem can switch them off. Being a multiplayer mode, it lives inside the same wall as everything else on this page: a Night Hunter on PC will never drop into a PlayStation session.
The Switch version is its own island
Dying Light: Platinum Edition reached the Nintendo Switch on 19 October 2021, six years after the original release, and it carries the expansion and the add-ons with it. Its co-op is the same four players and it needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership to go online, but there is no split screen and no route to any other platform, so a Switch owner is looking for other Switch owners and nobody else. That is worth knowing before anyone buys the portable version to play with a friend who owns the game somewhere else.
The sequel does not change the answer
People arrive at this question through the series rather than through one game, so it is worth saying plainly that the wall is a family trait. Our guide to playing Dying Light 2 co-op with friends walks through the Online Menu invite, and it is written for friends on the same platforms too. If you are choosing which game to buy so that a group can play together, the deciding question is not which Dying Light it is, it is which box everyone already owns. The rest of the first game is broken down on our main Dying Light guide, and the expansion that added more ground than both city districts hold has its own page on The Following.
FAQ
Is Dying Light cross-platform between PC and PS4?
No. Techland's support answer rules out cross-platform play for the game entirely, so a PC copy and a PlayStation copy cannot share a session.
Can Steam and Epic players play Dying Light together?
Yes. Techland names Steam, GOG and Epic Games in the same answer that rules out cross-platform play, because the PC versions count as one platform between them.
Can PS4 and PS5 players play Dying Light together?
In practice yes, because the PS5 version is a free upgrade patch applied to the same game rather than a separate edition. Techland has not said so outright.
How many players is Dying Light co-op?
Four in the campaign, on one platform. Be the Zombie adds a fifth player as the invading Night Hunter when invasions are switched on.
Can you transfer a Dying Light save to another platform?
No. The same Techland answer rules out save transfer, so a character does not move between PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch.
