Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an upcoming game from the creator of Dark Souls series and Bloodborne. The release date of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is set for 2019 and as we are getting closer, Hidetaka Miyazaki has talked about the game in details so here we are.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice recently sat down for an interview with a Spanish site. He talked about Japanese’ mythology, game design, creative process and more.
The interview started with Sekiro’s focus on Japanese’ mythology and if this was something in their mind a few years back. To which Hidetaka Miyazaki replied by saying that he didn’t at that time.
Hidetaka Miyazaki then talked about the creative process and how he creates these masterpieces. He said his team first makes the base for the game. Based on that game design, they choose where they want to focus on. As for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, they wanted to create a specific type of action so they decided to go with Ninjas as it was the best suitable option for the game.
Let’s talk about ‘Déraciné’, ‘Bloodborne’ or ‘Sekiro’, the starting point is the game system, the mechanics and the design. The first thing we study is the type of game we are looking for. Based on that design, we like to choose the universe that best suits you, the one that can contribute more in your characters or narrative. In the case of ‘Sekiro’ we wanted to design a very specific type of action and then we saw that we fit in it the figure of the ninja, which was the most appropriate to convey the sensations we were looking for.
Miyazaki says that Sekiro is a different kind of experience from his previous games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. This upcoming game is a mixture of some amazing ideas.
Miyazaki was then asked about how the first flame ignited for such kind of game. He explained it by saying that he discovered many different ideas while developing Dark Souls and Bloodborne. In short, he couldn’t fulfill most of these as they were not fitting in those universes. In order to turn those ideas into a reality, they had to create a new game other than these sagas so they compiled all of the amazing concepts and started making Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
The interviewer then talked about the themes and how’s it different from Dark Souls which had death, loneliness, time, pain as main themes. Miyazaki then clarified by saying that Sekiro is all about Japanese myths and by myths he means immortality and death.
Japanese myths are like a large shadow that is projected behind ‘Sekiro’. Because, in the era described in these myths, men and gods were very closely related in Japan. That is the universal image from which Japanese culture emerges. What I want to say is the way in which the Japanese myth of immortality arises.
