PlayStation 4 is on a wild ride to success and Sony has just announced that they have reached another milestone by surpassing 91.6 million PS4 lifetime unit sales as of December 31, 2018. We already wrote back in 2018 that the PS4 sales will cross 100 million by the end of 2019 and it all really seems possible now.
Sony confirmed surpassing 90 million PlayStation 4 lifetime sales globally through its press release. Sony also said that these sale numbers are of actual PS4 units sold to the customers. Sony then said that more than 5.6 million units were sold in the 2018 holiday season.
After all that, Sony revealed that their recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man game sold more than 9 million copies globally as of November 25, 2018. Marvel’s Spider-Man released in September 2018 so this is some huge numbers in a very short period. The credit for Spider Man PS4 sales go to Insomniac Games for creating a masterpiece like this.
At the end Sony thanked by saying:
Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018,” said John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones. This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.
Industry Analyst, Michael Pachter has also assured us in the past that more PS4 purchases are secure for the future. He also said that the recently released PlayStation Classic console will be able to sell millions without damaging the sales of PS4.
As for Spiderman PS4, it has managed to break many records and it’s still making headlines. Marvel’s Spider-Man “achieved the highest launch month dollar sales for any PlayStation exclusive in history, and is the seventh largest launch ever achieved by any game on any PlayStation platform” according to NPD’s Mat Piscatella.
In other PS4 news, God of War has won the game of the year award at The Game Awards 2019 leaving behind Red Dead Redemption. Sony’s first-party title line up on PS4 has been great all these years. They are going to keep this up by bringing big more games like The Last of Us 2 and Days Gone to the system.
Sony has clearly left behind Microsoft when it comes to games without any competition. It’s also rumored that Sony is going to release PS5 sometime in 2020.
We all are very excited and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for a big giant like Sony. PS4 sales will give Sony a clear boost by bringing more gamers from different platforms to the upcoming PS5 due to the great quality of content.
