It looks like Mike Pondsmith’s previous comment about timelines being affected doesn’t hold much weight after all.
If you don’t know what Cyberpunk 2020 is, that’s okay. I’m here to clear that. Cyberpunk 2020 was basically a role-playing game in the 90s in the style of a Dnd board game. The original designer of the game, Maxmike Pondsmith has confirmed that the upcoming RPG by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the same timeline as 2020.
This isn’t the information that really affects the gameplay or anything, but it’s a fun little lore dump. We already knew that the developers took inspiration for the game from other RPGs such as Deus Ex among others.
But with the information of Cyberpunk 2077 being set in the same universe as the original roleplaying game adds much more than we can expect.
Such as the return of the main characters like Alt Cunningham. I’m actually hoping that the soundtrack is canonically composed by Johnny Silverhand as well.
This is the second time CD Projekt Red is taking old material to turn it into an amazing video game. The last time they did so was the Witcher trilogy that was inspired by a series of books. Now? Cyberpunk 2077 derived from a board game in the nineties.
It’s nice to see that at least the designer of the board game is happy with the partnership. Unlike the author of the Witcher book series.
Speaking of the Witcher, it’s sad that CD Projekt Red confirmed that we shouldn’t expect to see any of Ciri and Geralt in Cyberpunk 2077. Not in any canon form at least, easter eggs are still a possibility.
This is a respectable choice. CD Projekt Red have basically established that they want Cyberpunk 2077 to be its own game. They’d rather not leech off the success of their other title in any way at all. The only references we should expect here are to the original Cyberpunk 2020.
The only references that CD Projekt Red have given to the Witcher games regarding Cyberpunk 2077 are that the quest system will be very different.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC at an unconfirmed date.
