Now that he enjoys his retirement, Reggie Fils-Aime, former president of Nintendo of America, has time for new activities, such as giving talks to young university students. In fact, on October 21, his first group conference was held at Cornell University, where he talked about various topics, such as the Nintendo Wii U, a console that he described as a failure.
In a post on ResetEra, Theorymon, a forum user who attended Fils-Aime’s talk, shared some of the things the former executive said. As reported, Reggie Fils-Aime talked about the history of Nintendo and when arriving at the Wii U mentioned that it was a resounding failure.
That said, he mentioned that it was a stumbling block that had a positive side, since it led to the creation of the Switch, a console that is breaking it in the market. In case you don’t know, the Nintendo Wii U was Nintendo’s eighth-generation console, which sold just over 13 million units worldwide.
This means that it sold considerably less than its predecessor, the Nintendo Wii, a console that was a global phenomenon with 101.63 million units shipped. Also, its sales are lower than the Nintendo GameCube and only dispatch just over 4 million units more than the SEGA Dreamcast.
Despite the low sales, the Nintendo Wii U is a console remembered with love by many for a couple of things. The first is for its control with a screen that moved away the desktop gaming from the TV.
The second is that it received acclaimed games like The Wonderful 101; Super Mario 3D World; Xenoblade Chronicles X; Pikmin 3 and others who fortunately found a second chance in the Nintendo Switch catalog.
Although the Wii U has been declared dead on many occasions, the reality is that as long as it continues to receive support from Nintendo, the console remains with life status, and it is not for less because it has some valid titles. However, it is clear that such support is routine and a while back the Japanese company released a new update for the predecessor of Switch.
The report of a ResetEra user alerted Wii U users about the release of a new update that makes the system version 5.5.4 U. The information could be corroborated upon entering the official Nintendo site, where despite there is no section for Wii U, information about this update is included.
It should be noted that, like the one launched in September 2018, there is nothing relevant, except for general improvements to ensure system stability and some minor adjustments to improve the user experience. Nintendo also warns about the use of third-party hardware or software, which could cause the console to malfunction by not having the company’s official license.
Obviously, the community assumes the release of this update as the most recent measure against piracy, taking into account that Wii U is a console operated by the homebrew enthusiast community.
