As is the case with almost every Pokemon game, there are fossils for the player to unearth. These fossils can turn into living, breathing Pokemon that get added to the Pokedex. However, with Sword and Shield, there’s a twist that adds an extra challenge. Pokemon Sword and Shield Fossil Pokemon Locations and Fossil Combinations
Fossils in Sword and Shield are of 4 Types, and instead of each fossil turning into a different type of Pokemon, you have to combine the various types of fossils to create an all-new Pokemon!
There are several possible variations, and if you plan on filling your Pokedex, you’ll need to mix and create each and every one of them; fortunately, there are fossils aplenty in Sword and Shield, so you don’t have to worry about that.
Before getting to the fossils themselves, you should know that some of the fossils are only available in Sword, while the remaining fossils are only available in Shield.
Therefore, the only way for you to acquire every possible fossil is to locate and obtain one in each game, have one of your Pokemon hold onto it, and then trade them over to the other game, gaining possession of the aforementioned fossil.
It’s a bit of a hassle, I know, but one worth the trouble.
As mentioned earlier, there are 4 types of fossils, which are:
- Fossilized Bird
- Fossilized Dino
- Fossilized Fish
- Fossilized Drake
The Fossilized Bird and Dino are exclusive to Sword, whereas the Fossilized Fish and Drake are exclusive to Shield. Once you’re in possession of all the fossils, you can combine them to create a brand new Pokemon.
However, before we get to the actual way of combining them, let’s first go over the location of these Pokemon fossils.
Fossilized Bird
You must go to the town of Stow-on-Side and head directly to the Pokemon Center, but don’t enter it! Outside the Center, look for a man wearing a grey shirt and dark-green pants; this man will give you two Fossilized Birds just for talking to him – neat!
Fossilized Dino
Go to Route 6 and make your way over to the Diglett Monument. Nearby the monument you’ll find a set of ladders; take the second one down to the level below.
Once you’re on that level, go left and climb up the first ladder you see. Once you’re up, look to your left and you’ll see a large rock situated firmly on the ground; the fossil is right behind it!
Fossilized Fish/Drake
The remaining fossils are a bit trickier to acquire. These two don’t have a fixed location. Rather, there’s only one way of acquiring them but it’s entirely luck-based.
You will have to go to the Pokemon Nursery near Bridge Field; you’ll find a pair of diggers there – the Digging Duo.
Pay the Digging Dup 500 Watts and they’ll dig something up for you. Whether they dig up something worthwhile (like a fossil) is completely indeterminable.
You’ll just have to keep paying them and hope that they’ll eventually unearth the fossils you’re looking for!
Pokemon Sword and Shield Fossil Combinations
There’s a simple way of combining the fossils, but before getting to that, let’s give you a quick rundown on what you actually gain when you combine certain types of fossils.
- Fossilized Drake + Fossilized Fish = Dracovish (Water/Dragon-Type)
- Fossilized Dino + Fossilized Bird = Arctozolt (Electric/Ice-Type)
- Fossilized Bird + Fossilized Fish = Arctovish (Water/Ice-Type)
- Fossilized Dino + Fossilized Drake = Dracozolt (Electric/Dragon-Type)
That is what you’re attempting to create. Some pretty strange Pokemon that can aptly be described as being the rarest of the rare.
Here’s what you do after getting the fossils.
You’re looking for Professor Cara Liss, a woman that can be found in a familiar place; head to the place where you located the Fossilized Dino.
She’s in the exact same area, instead of turning left after climbing up the ladder, turn right. She’ll be hunched over, examining something.
Briefly chat with the Professor and present her with the fossils you’ve collected. She’ll offer to combine them for you; she’ll ask you to decide the combination, which won’t be a big deal if you have all the fossils, allowing you to create each Pokemon – but if you only have a select few, them make you decision wisely.
That’s all there is to it. A little disappointing to know that there isn’t a set way of acquiring all the fossils, but at least you know the actual method of acquiring them.
