Playstation 4 Pro Was Named for “Pro” Gamers

If you've been wondering why the Playstation 4 Pro suddenly got a name change from the Playstation 4 Neo, Masayama Ito has the explanation for you.

Many people that were keeping track of the Playstation 4 Pro before its official reveal would remember that it used to be called the Playstation 4 Neo, and before that the Playstation 4K. However, the “Pro” was the name that was given to it on its announcement at the Playstation Meeting in New York City last week.

So, why the change? According to an interview of Masayasu Ito by the website Gamergen.com, the reason was because of who would likely be the primary users of the new Playstation 4 console: pro gamers. The Playstation 4 Pro includes a wide variety of new functions, including more processing power (at 4.2 teraflops), 4K resolution, and much more. “Pro” gamers would undoubtedly have a lot of the best hardware they could buy, which might include a 4K TV.

But that’s not all that led into the development of the Pro. According to Ito, who is the executive vice president at Sony Computer Entertainment: Japan, the reason behind the development of the Pro was due to the widening gap in graphical quality between PCs and consoles. Consoles can’t normally be opened and fiddled with by gamers like PCs can, which left PCs in a more advantageous position when a new graphics card or other sort of part came out for them.

The Playstation 4 Pro (along with its direct competitor the Xbox One Scorpio) were designed to curtail this. Both consoles offer high-resolution graphics and better performance than their original designs. Streaming online is also such a big thing now that the Playstation 4 doesn’t have Ultra HD Blu-Ray capabilities built into it in order to focus more on video streaming than physical media.

With the Playstation 4 Pro slated to come out in November, Sony will have to see just how well it stacks up against PCs when the console begins to be put to the test, especially by gamers that own both PCs and video game consoles.
