From Software has developed a reputation with its Dark Souls franchise and the PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne. However, many still are surprised when they learn that From Software has developed games other than Dark Souls.
Speaking with the Guardian, Hidetaka Miyazaki, President at From Software, noted that people still get surprised when they learn that From Software has developed adventure games like Echo Night.
He added that such reactions remind him that the studio really needs to work of different games to broaden their profile and become more flexible in terms of game development.
FromSoftware had made adventure games, before we acquired our recent reputation for the series everyone is familiar with. One of them was Echo Night. We didn’t want to just recreate it, but we know what makes a good adventure game, and we thought, let’s see what we can do. I’ve observed some surprise in the reactions so far from people who were not aware that FromSoftware does other things besides Souls. This serves as a reminder to me that we have an established reputation – and that we should work on different games, so we can be more flexible and build a broader profile. That’s how I see our future.
He added that From Software will continue to develop games with large-scale productions to keep up with their reputation but at the same time, the studio will be bringing its “flavourful games”.
We’ll obviously continue to make the larger scale productions that we’ve become known for. That is our reputation. But at the same time we want to put out one-off, quirky, flavourful games. We are not always given the opportunity and the timing may not always be right, but I think that is who we would like to be.
For those who don’t know, From Software has also developed games in the Armored Core franchise. However, it is true that the studio’s reputation is attached to its Dark Souls games.
Currently, From Software is working on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with Activision publishing it.
While, there are some similarities between Sekiro Shadows Die Twice and the Dark Souls but according to Miyazaki, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice isn’t an “evolution of the Souls Series” as they are developing the game from the ground up.
According to Miyazaki, while they did learn a lot from the Dark Souls games and the Bloodborne but, they have reinvented the formula for the upcoming Sekiro Shadows Die Twice.
Do you think From Software needs to be more flexible in terms of the games they develop? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
